Ok, I've tried several times, from 3.52 M33-4, 3.71 M33-2, and 3.80 M33-5 to update to the newest 3.90 M33 and M33-3.

Each and every time I do, I get an error at 92% that says it cannot go further, and end up with a bricked PSP (Yes, it's a FAT). I've been using the 3.90 firmware from http://www.psp-hacks.com/category/64 and the Updater both from Dark Alex's website, and the self downloading one with 3.80.

I've reset the PSP using the UPMS and Pandora battery created from this guide http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/580254

...So is this a common issue? What am I doing wrong?

EDIT: I've done it on my SLIM, and it worked without a flaw.
EDIT2: Also, I've used both the offical Sony Brand 1GB Stick that came with the PSP, and a SanDisk 4gb stick that I bought from Best Buy. I've used both for previous updates in the past with no issues (And used the 4gb one to update the SLIM)

The CFW works OK on my phat and slim PSP, so that a problem in your PSP.

Maybe something related to the NAND?...

I had a FAT PSP that wouldn't manually upgrade past 3.71 without bricking.
Have you tried Despertar del Cementerio (http://www.dark-alex.org/) 4 or 5?
When DC4 came out I used Pandora and it finally flashed properly.
DC4 seems to fix a lot of NAND flash problems.

I can't really help, but it's definitely not a common issue - it's down to your PSP specifically.
