Uh.........hi. I've been away from the psp scene sometime now. I sold my old fat psp, got a DS, sold it and bought another, this time slim psp. A firiend of mine installed the 3.90 m33-2 on it later. And then I find that I can't run any homebrew at all, neither my old PSX isos. Why is this? Is there any way to run them?.

I have to emphatize, I'm a complete noob in this.

Slims cannot run the 1.50 kernel. (http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=2148048146&postcount=5)
So DA redesigned the way custom firmware is installed from 3.71M33 on.

For POPS (PSX Games)
From 3.71M33 on you will have to install 3.80 M33 Popsloader v2. (http://www.dark-alex.org/)

Homebrew for the Slim
You have to use Homebrew that has been recompiled to run on the 3.xx kernel only.

Nope
Popsloader 3.80 M33 Popsloader v2. 3 works on 3.90M33 as well.
Popsloader works on all versions of cfw.
Just make sure to get the right version for your firmware.

3.80m33 popsloader v2 (http://dark-alex.org/) works on 3.90M33 (1, 2 and 3)

Check and make sure its installed correctly.

You might have a counterfeit memory card if it fails to load when holding R
This has happened to me.
I spent about 8 hours between my 2 PSP's trying to figure this out.
They are both nearly identical TA-079's.

fatmsmod, no fatmsmod, popsloaderv2, fat, fat32, low level format, different pops packages...

After everything I tried it came down a counterfeit memory card.
Neither PSP will load pops off that memory card when running 3.90M33-3
I couldn't believe it since that card had performed fine with out any problems on previous firmwares.
I can do anything I want with it except pops on 3.90M33-3
Damn Castlevania icon shows up every time.
