I notice some new hardware addons designed for MP3 playback, but isn't it possible to just do it with software?

I know Moonshell plays MP3s but it's rather limited in abilities compared to, say, a PSP's MP3 playback function.

If Moonshell and lmp-ng (an iPod clone) don't fit your needs, then you're out of luck. DSOrganize can also play mp3 files but it's more limited than Moonshell aside from playlist support.
