And no, we're not even talking about Deca Sports (http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/deca-sports), which features kart racing as one of its ten activities. Rather, Conspiracy Entertainment is making another (http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/03/25/cocoto-fishing-master-announced-for-wiiware/) Wii game (http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/03/05/cocoto-magic-circus-ships-for-wii-no-one-notices/) in their Cocoto series, called Cocoto Kart Racer (which is already out for the DS, GameCube, PC and PS2). The title should be coming out soon (the press release said Q2 2008), and will probably break the hearts of children everywhere. We're not saying it will necessarily be a bad game (even though the other versions got poor reviews, so let's be realistic), but the point is, it's not Mario Kart.

Imagine a child asking his or her parents for Mario Kart, only to be sorely disappointed when they come home with Cocoto Kart Racer instead because they don't know the difference or want to go with the cheaper option. We can definitely see that happening.

Ok, so I bought the first copy of Mario Kart Wii (USA) from my local shop and while driving home I wondered if there would be a mandatory firmware update for my Wii. I did read about the possibility and other updates that Smash Brothers Brawl
had, and sure enough, I was quite annoyed that I could not play Mario Kart w/o first updating to what I assume is the absolute latest firmware to date.

I have a NON-modchip Wii, but have three methods of homebrew: 1 Wii and 2 Gamecube methods:

Wii- Twilight Hack (which I did not remove- I repeat, Twilight hack WAS installed for the test)

Gamecube - I have Datel's Action Replay AND their newer SD Launcher.

So, as I am sure many people will be looking this up on the web, here are my test results:

I had an early firmware version (just before the one that disabled Gamecube methods) which Mario Kart was so kind to upgrade.

My original Action Replay is indeed now "bricked" or non working in gamecube mode, so this device will now live solely on my actual Gamecube in another room.

Datel's SD media Launcher is very new with perhaps the latest or 2nd latest disc version and this STILL WORKS like a charm. The update did not affect it at all.

Wii mode - The Twilight hack ALSO STILL WORKS! Also, by my study, I did not have to remove it from my system memory before the update either so rest easy this time around. Do note that I do NOT play online so they may still try later.

Final thoughts- I am still coming up with an analogy as to why these mandatory updates annoy me. I am thinking in legal terms like if you own a car and cannot get an oil change unless you padlock the engine so you can't tweak it. I can see how if they eventually "beat" the battle, it will only get MORE people to finally go buy a modchip. I hope I never have to. I may boycott some future games and then they will be out $50 per game I DON"T buy.
