Sony is lowering PlayStation Network download speeds in the United States, the company announced today.
The company first throttled back download speeds in Europe (https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2020-03-24-sony-throttles-back-game-downloads-in-europe) on Tuesday, saying it was a measure taken in light of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This expansion of that effort was announced in an update to the original PlayStation Blog post (https://blog.us.playstation.com/2020/03/24/preserving-internet-access-for-the-entire-community/) about the limits for Europe.
"Beginning today, we will take similar measures in the United States, and we will continue to take appropriate action to do our part to help ensure internet stability as this unprecedented situation continues to evolve," the company said.
Sony is not alone in dialing back on bandwidth usage. Earlier this month, Netflix said it would lower video quality (https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-51968302) for a month to reduce data consumption by 25%.
