problem with ps1 game saving on ps2.... HELP!

I've a problem...
I loved Final Fantasy VIII from the PS1, so i just bought it off ebay.. i was delighted,put it into my PS2 and played it for about 3 hours or so, went to save it, and for some reason it won't save on my ps2 memory card!!!! :confused:

I'm gutted... anyone any suggestions? Do i have to get a PS1 memory card as well, or will that not work in the PS2?

You can only save using a PlayStation 1 memory card.
