Yep, that's what it looks like to me.

If you take a moment to actually think about it, SONY will never release a UMD burner to the consumer market. It's just common sense. They are trying as hard as they can to squash piracy on the PSP, so why on earth would they just hand over that techknowledgy? Would it be a cool thing for people to have? Sure. Would they sell to the consumer mass market? No, the only people who would pay for it would be people who would want to burn pirated games and UMD movies.

Umd burning ,,

a umd disc its self is the standard 3 inch mini disc so if you could buy cases for them you could easyerly burn on to the mini disc and put it in to a case and the psp would recognise it if you did it in the right format

UMD Burning put to rest...

1) The PSPs UMD will use a custom file system, much like the Xbox DVD file system, that PCs are unable to understand and therefor cannot burned by regular burners. The only to get around this would be to create a mod-chip for the PSP to accept the standard ISO filesystem, or create a custom DVD burner firmware and operating system with software that recognises the filesystem! As the later has never happened on the Xbox, you can rest assured it'll never happen for the PSP!

2) Even if a mod-chip is created, you'll still have to work around the custom shell that the UMD is housed in. Not only is there the case sort out, but also the metal disc filling the hole found in regular discs, they have to be very sturdy as the entire disc is spinning very quickly on that thing!

3) If that picture is genuine, then it is indeed a Dev-Kit, the only way to obtain one would be to prove to Sony that you are a genuine games developer, requiring many software demos and game concepts, if Sony approve then you'll be required to sign a contract dictating how many games they'll want you to produce and you'll have to pay them a fat load of cash for the privilege (mostly funded by publishers)...the dev-kit will be recalled to Sony once the contract is finished, unless they renew said contract. If you are found in possesion of a dev-kit without authorisation from Sony, you will be arrested, most likely on account of theft or possesion of stolen property!

Hope this clears a lot of stuff up,
Cheers,
Fox
