I tried doing homebrew on my Dreamcast, but it's not working. My DC just reboots if I try. Here's what I know:

What I know:

My DC was made in August 1999
It is a Revision 0
I am using Memorex CDRs
My DC recognizes the CDR because it reads it as a music disc
The homebrew burning tutorial thread needs updating. I downloaded the latest version of BootDreams, and NONE of the buttons or commands matched the tutorial.

I really wanna play some homebrew, especially emulators. Can someone give me some insight?

What homebrew apps/emus are you trying to burn?

And, what settings did you use in bootdreams?

As far as the CD-R questions...look here: http://dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=90372

I tried OpenTTD, plus one other games whose name escapes me. They were both .CDIs. I used 1x burn method, Data/Data, and I tried both CdRecord and that other method. I have to get off my dad's computer soon, so I don't have time to check in detail.

Sorry I've never attempted to try that one out...but you might obtain some useful info from here.

I'm still in the dark...who here is successful with DC homebrew? Can you tell me what steps to do, settings to set, and BootDreams version to use?

try this DC_image_maker.zip (http://games4all.nm.ru/DC_image_maker.zip)

1. put yuor data files to data folder and run *.bat file for create CD image

CDI.bat for create *.CDI image (DiscJuggler)
MDS.bat for create MDS/MDF image (Alcohol 120%)

2. Burn CD image with DiscJuggler or Alcohol 120%

That's not necessarily the answer I'm looking for.

Can you tell me what steps to do, settings to set, and BootDreams version to use?

The link I gave had a complete CDI image ready to download, burn, and play.

If you must create the image yourself.

1. Download Bootdreams (1.0.6b or 1.0.6c) - http://dchelp.dcemulation.org/?BootDreams

Install on your PC. Example - C:\Bootdreams

2. Download your OpenTTD plain files, not sure where to get them. The folder should have all the required files in it, including a "1st_Read.bin" or other main binary.

Unzip the folder to your PC.
Example - "C:\Bootdreams\OpenTTD\" or whatever you name the folder ("C:\Bootdreams\??????\").

3. Start up Bootdreams, select "BROWSE" by Selfboot folder, select the unzipped "OpenTTD" or whatever you named the folder from step 2.

4. Select the image type from tabs at top of Bootdreams windows for the image type - CDI, NRG, or burn straight to cd with CDRecord option.

5. Select either DATA/DATA or AUDIO/DATA option. Haven't tested this homebrew myself, but most work fine with either option.

6. Click process button, and if prompts come up...

say YES to "scramble" main binary
say YES to create IP.bin

Create Image.

If you dont burn straight off of Bootdreams, burn with your program of choice.

CDI = Alcohol 120, or Discjuggler.
NRG = Nero

All right, next time I get my hands on a blank disc, I'm going to try again. I just need to ask my mom to get some CDRs. If that doesn't work, I'm coming back to this thread.

OpenTTD is a WIP and proof of concept that runs at about 70% speed. If you really just want to try out some homebrew on Dreamcast, I recommend to download something from http://www.dcevolution.net/

The standard format is .cdi that can be burned in Alcohol120%, DiscJuggler or BootDreams' CDI burner.

The downloads are compressed in RAR and can be decompressed with 7-zip (free software) or WinRAR (shareware).

Some recommended downloads for starters would be:

Now I remember the name of the second game. It was "abrickdc".
