the only reason i want a "mod kit" is to really run old gameboy games
does lameboy or the other emu for the ds run original gameboy games?

also, since i'm new i obviously haven't the mod hardware yet for ds so what should i get

m3? or r4?

i only want 1 gig, i'm not sure what to buy though and then it would have to run a gb emulator

if anyone has experience in what i'm after here please speak up

Lameboy is the best option for emulating GB and GBC games on the DS, though if you have a slot-2 device you can run Goomba Color as well, which runs in GBA mode but also has good compatibility.

Stay away from the M3 Simply and R4. They are outdated, unsupported, and are generally the worst carts still commercially available. Other carts are fine, like the CycloDS Evolution, M3 Real, Acekard 2, Supercard DS, etc. Each cart has advantages and disadvantages, so you'll want to read up on reviews of each (GBAtemp has good reviews). If all you care about is GB/GBC emulation, then any of them will work fine, as they will all run Lameboy the exact same.
