It kinda sounds like a normal DC to me - noisy. It sounds like the disc is spinning at least but that it's maybe not recognising it as it should.

I'm going to state the obvious and suggest cleaning the laser eye with some isopropyl alcohol and a cotton bud or even dusting lightly with a light brush. That might get any layer of dust off the lens (if there is any).

If that doesn't help you may need to recalibrate the laser. Google should probably yield some useful stuff about how to do it (not done it myself but I'm sure soemone round here will have and might be able to guide you better than I can), but here's a link to one I found with pictures. There used to be loads of guides at consolevision but that site's gone now - anyone know if there's an archive of the site's tutorials?

Hope it helps, but it sounds like you have to be patient and tweak the screw a bit, then test it and repeat until it hopefully works.

I guess the whole GD-Rom unit might be stuffed but it sounds like it's working to some extent.

It sounds normal... until like the motor or something gives. Maybe my lid is loose? Anyway, thanks, I'll try it out.
