hi. just wondered, if I was to buy a new psp console in the shop today, what firmware would the system be running? does it make a difference what pack I buy? eg giga pack or starter pack?

No, that doesn't really matter. It would most definetely either be a 2.01, 2.50 or a 2.60. But if i had to choose between those 3 firmwares, i would definetely choose for 2.60. Because there is no difference in homebrew compatibility between those 3 firmwares, and with firmware 2.60, you of course have the ability to play all UMDs (games and movies) like Splinter Cell Essentials (i want that game very badly but i am strictly staying at 2.0 though it is attractive to upgrade. :) )

So if your firmware is 2.01 or higher, go for 2.6 (my opinion). If it is 2.0 or lower, you have the ability to downgrade ( if you have 1.51, 1.52 or 2.0 you can upgrade to 2.0 (if you don't have that firmware already ;) ) and then downgrade to 1.50)

Buy a 2.0 or 1.5 from ebay. Homebrew works perfect on it from the psp game menu, whereas with 2.01 or above you need fanjitas eloader and gta:lcs to load up the homebrew. Unless you dont care about running homebrew and just want to play the latest games for the system, just buy one in the shop. You can identify what firmware your psp is running by looking at the letter on the side of the box:
A-1.50
B-1.51
C-1.52
D-2.00 Unconfirmed
E-2.00 Unconfirmed (likely 1.52)
F-2.00
G-2.01

Just wondering if there is a european 1.50 update. I downgraded my euro 2.0 to 1.50, and i used the update on the european version of metal gear acid. But all euro psps started at 1.52 so why would a 1.50 update be on the disc.??? All my psp stuff was bought in uk. Check MGA disc for update
It is quite strange
just wondering.

thanks, am i right in understanding that you need 2.0 or lower to play ISO files (or downloaded games?) and that its not possible to downgrade to 1.5 from above 2.0? Also, can someone please define homebrew? I'm new to all this u see.

dont talk about iso's. you can not downgrade downgrade from 2.01+
Homebrew are games made by fans of the psp or just coders who do it as a hobby. they are free. there are loads of great homebrew avaitable from this website. You can also play emulators such as nes, snes, sega genesis, among others.
