View Full Version : Sony’s new “Smaller” PSP with Touch-Screen

Could this be the V2 PSP? (No it isnt but interesting idea)

Source - Newtech spy (http://www.newtechspy.com/articles06/sonypsi.html)

Sony is set to rock the gaming world once again with a new play platform entry. The PSi (interactive) is just 4.5” wide and carries a 3” LCD with 16 million colors. Other familiar features include a tightly squeezed UMD and memory stick duo. Amazingly the PSi has the same pixel resolution as PSP, with 480 x 272, so gaming titles will not have to be reformatted.New Tech Spy has learned through well placed sources that Sony is apparently hedging its bets against the possible death of UMD and positioning itself against Nintendo’s DS lite, which sold an impressive 380,000 in Japan in March.

The PSi is designed with a nearly unscratchable touch screen that will give users a virtual keyboard in which to enter internet addresses and other duties previously unavailable to PSP users. The rest of the body is constructed of matte finish plastic to eliminate the smudge-laden appearance of its glossy exteriored sibling. The " i" also gives the PSi the ability to work not just with WiFi networks but with WiBro, UMTS, EVDO, and future WiMax networks via switchable modules that correspond with each system and their sponsors... Which leads to some questions; wireless photo sharing?, peer-to-peer gaming? or possibly music, game and video downloads? One thing is for sure, without the support of UMD by the major movie studios, Sony may have to find another way to bring in profitable content.

Check out the screen via the Comments

Just to make sure your reading correctly this is a fake but like i said above its an interesting idea

I like the PSP, but it's a bit expensive. Eh. A smaller version sould be nice. Touch screen would rock. Beef up the processor and put some Linux PDA stuff on there, and THEN I'd be all over it.

Can you imagine?! It's hard enough to play more than an hour on the regular PSP (for big people like me, with big hands) without getting painful hand cramp....I'm sorry, but I'll skip this one....unles they make it homebrew compatible :)

It's NOT an official news by Sony in a news conference.

Yes, this thing looks like a fake.

I was impressed by the idea of what the PSi is capable of. But my first thought was: "Why to start another project now, before the 2nd PSP?"

And now that i saw that design, i think i can be 85-95 percent sure that this is a fake. This device really isn't well designed. The PSP is a real sports car in form of a handheld;). But that one that shall be a PSi isn't one.

I think this is stupid I dont want to buy a secound PSP but i would have to if this did come out and it would be good for homebrew because the security would be improved. The features sound cool but i just dont want to shell out another $250 for another PSP.

Bargain price...a PSP is way too expensive with over priced UMDs and Memory Sticks!!! (it is actually much more espensive than you think because those Memory sticks and UMDs are actually the source in which Sony gains money...even though it makes losses with every PSP sold!)

The XGP is a console by Gamepark and is therefore the next version of the highly successful GP32.

GP2X is made by Gamepark HOLDINGS, an independent company of Gamepark, no relation.

April 11th, 2006, 20:20
Yes i know all about the XGP, you might be hurting those with small connections with all the photos, i agree the XGP is interesting but i cant see it doing anything unless its open to homebrew.

BTW pspupdates isnt a good source of official news, they steal from everyone just like other sites and post fake videos and made up screenshots :P

If you are korean then do you know if the GP2X is doing well over there and will the xgp have commercial support ?

youngjoonshi
April 11th, 2006, 20:27
Sorry,
I just wanted to show them some cool gadgets^^

Anyway, I agree pspupdates sucks...but they got the news from some other official sources.

Yep, I am a Korean, reviewer of iRiver UK and Gamepark Ltd.

The GP2X...

Well, it's a different story since it has nothing to do with Gamepark but it was pretty successful...

But you see, nobody actually buys game consoles in Korea, the GP2X was for the UK and US.

Koreans just sit in front of their PC 24/7...lol

The XGP has commercial support, yes, from id Software, Doom and Quake + Unreal Tournament and many more...

It really is cool..Oh, and you can remove it if you don't want it to be there...^^

The left one is with a Joystick
and the rigtht with a QWERTY Keyboard

- G20 - an expanded version of the G10 which is focused on gaming. It can play music and movies and has a QWERTY keyboard along with a HTML browser feature for internet use. The keyboard is hidden by the slide function and the G20 utilizes a 4 inch TFT-LCD and has a capacity of 6GB.

It's the right one.

- G10 - this product was revealed earlier on to the public. It utilizes WiBro for wireless streaming of various services such as games. It has a 4inch TFT-LCD with 6GB capacity and can play games, music, and movies.

It's the left one.

I disagree, it seems that some of his/her posts are biased and even mis informative. The Screen size comparision of the XGP is actually for the GP2X as shown in the title of the pictures and were from DaveC on the GP2X forums. The hundreds of ex-GP2X developers seems exaggerated considering the fact I don't even think there are even a hundred currently for the GP2X.

Is much is a want this to be fake i have a gut feeling that it's not. Sony sees that the DS is way outselling the PSP so... they rip the big N off and slap a touch screen on the PSP to cash in. This looks like true sony fashion: wait for someone else to make good idea, rip it off and make there own half-baked version, and let the money roll in.

end of rant

I agree with yaustar, youngjoonshi is constantly posting anti-PSP comments in PSP threads. I can understand youngjoonshi's devotion to their cause, but we don't need salespeople telling us that we're stupid for making the choices that we have. I think the vast majority of us knew about the GP2X pro's and con's before buying a PSP, and I doubt there are many of us who would've chosen differently, even in retrospect. Maybe youngjoonshi's contributions would be more appropriate/more appreciated in different forums. Personally, youngjoonshi's comments just come across as more Korean Japan-bashing that I'm really not interested in, especially when youngjoonshi flat out admitted that Koreans don't know squat about consoles since they're all too busy with their PC's.

youngjoonshi
April 12th, 2006, 10:02
I am not a sales person by the way. I love my PSP!

As I said, I just wanted to inform about gadgets.

If you think it's biased or negative, then just don't read it.

Delete it if you want.

Hundreds of ex-GP2X developers is true, they have started to develop new homebrews sinceSeptember, 2005.

A fully working Windows XP means that you can virtually run ALL the emulators and games in the XGP or W10, thanks to their nVidia Goforce graphic chip.

This is not something to make "stupid" choices, the buyers are the kings, if you don't like them you will never have to buy it.

ONLY COMMENT IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE GADGETS.

Otherwise, this thread will just be full of criticisms.

PS: For those interested, have a look at my site: www.gadgetkorea.com, we have all the infos you need about those gadgets.

b8a
April 12th, 2006, 11:44
My comments were merely made in response to you making a valuable reporter. I think maybe you have an inside track on the myriad of Korean gadgets hitting the market, but I disagree that you'd make a valuable reporter because many of your views are far removed from mainstream and you're clearly biased. I haven't double checked any of the specs or claims that you posted, but your level of enthusiasm alone makes me skeptical. I don't think anyone's trying to censor you here, I think we all love to hear about handy, new, exciting gadgets regardless of their real market potential, but, I do think you could stand to tone down the rhetoric a few notches.

ONLY COMMENT IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE GADGETS.
I agree with you about staying on topic, but honestly pal, this was never a topic about random handheld consoles until you turned it in that direction. Your information has been interesting, yes, but more than just a little out of place. And maybe think twice about posting in succession. It's one thing to carry on a tangent that others have expressed interest in (like Wraggster eventually did), but it's another to completely derail a topic by making posts one after another about a mostly unrelated subject.

If you think it's biased or negative, then just don't read it.
If you want to give us the option to ignore your posts as we see fit, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, make them easier to read! You included many large pictures (many of us outside of Korea where, if I remember right, you have the largest public high speed network in the world, get bogged down by all the pictures) and gads of long <b>bold</b> <font color="red">colorful</font> <u>text formatting</u> that made it very hard to simply skip your posts (and, by the way, along with your rhetoric, all of that promotional like formatting is what makes you come accross as a pushy salesman). And if you hadn't noticed, people continued to make posts relevant to the initial posting even after your first unrelated caveat, and that was A LOT of information to simply ignore in order to get back on track. In the future you may want to just make a quick note about the gadgets that you're promoting, with a few small pictures, and then provide a link for those who are interested to learn more. We REALLY didn't need the whole sales pitch. I'm not really one to speak as I tend to write long-ish posts, but I think it's safe to say that you could stand to edit yourself a bit before posting.

Yep, it was interesting to hear about the various consoles, it was neat to hear about the various things I could get if I had a few hundred spare dollars laying around and a little free time. I'm not trying to be overly critical here, but speaking for myself, these are just a few points for you to consider if you don't want to provoke extranious criticism concerning your postings.

Back to the topic at hand (!_!)

Ok, everyone has a point. youngjoonshi I enjoy this info you are giving but please keep it out of the psp section (in other words I am asking you to post it elswhere in the forums.. and i am not just saying that. I ACTUALLY WANT YOU to post it... but not in the psp section.

Lets keep the peace and stay on topic though.

Is this not generally true about electronics? The more cramped the gadget the hotter its going to get?

Wow, that's somehow too long for me.^^

Don't worry, they are not the actual reports, I have written them within a few minutes.

The true reports can be found in my personal site, we are currently growing very fast and therefore moving host soon...

I have employed true reporters and actually, we get the FASTEST news DIRECT from the news and report gadgets that people have never seen before.

Yep, Of course, I will make them easier to read.

In fact, I just upload a pic and a very short description.

To be honest, there are WAY TOO MANY PSP/PS3...etc. sites out there BUT virtually none for gadgets like these.

Once they are released, we will become the Number 1 site about non-branded gadgets since we talked about them since their very first rumour release.

Well, have a look: www.gadgetkorea.com, but as I said, we will upgrade very soon...^^

umm if you owned a buisiness and were getting your ass kicked then wouldnt you change game plan ;)

and plus it wouldnt be ripping off because sony will sell it for 70X as much

i guess nintendo ripped off atari
1. I would change-yes, copy-no.
2.Sure it is.
3.The Atari was dead there is a difference.
I would like to see sony make some inovative ideas instead of using others.

Ok i guess first come first serve in the buisness world? If ds is the first to have a touch screen no more can. and imo ripping off would be copying an idea and selling it for less... not more because if they are practicly the same then the cheaper would sell more....

and youngjoonshi i agree you do look like a salesman (woman?) its great information (if true) BUT... this is a psp forum and this is kinda anti psp

here are some examples of your anti-pspness....
-----------------------------------------------
"Have a look at this big info thread I have made, I think it is better than that fake PSi:"

"Yeah, we know the PSP's speakers are very quiet but this one cracks"

"Bargain price...a PSP is way too expensive with over priced UMDs and Memory Sticks!!! (it is actually much more espensive than you think because those Memory sticks and UMDs are actually the source in which Sony gains money...even though it makes losses with every PSP sold!)"

"The most important fact about this one is that it is 100% HOMEBREW FRIENDLY!"
ahhh hitting it where it hurts

"PSP: Old 11b... "

and heres my favorite

"The design is superior than a PSP as shown and replaces the PSP's crap digital cross with the excellent analong stick. + SHOULDER BUTTONS!!!"

I just had to jump in and at least comment on all the "information" being posted about the XGP here. I personally don't find youngjoonshi's comments too compelling for a number of reasons..basically because of comments such as "hundred of ex-gp2x developers developing new homebrew since Sep 2005". First off the gp2x wasn't even out in Sep 2005, so it's kind of hard to have ex-developers...maybe ex-gp32 developers was meant. Secondly specs for the XGP weren't even finalized under March 2006(there were concepts before then, but not the machine matching the specs released in March). Kind of hard to develop for a platform that doesn't even exist. In fact it's not even been officially announced that the XGP will support homebrew code.

Just a few other misc. corrections. In youngjoonshi's comparison post of gp32,gp2x,xgp,and psp screens it was stated they are all samsung screens. The gp2x is definatly not(it is made by a small company called TopSun) and the later gp32 screen were also not. It was also stated games such as Halo, Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, etc would be coming to the platform. Of those only Q3 is open source and has a chance, the others would have to be ported by Epic and Microsoft...folks, that's not happening anytime soon...as for those screenshots...why are they 4:3 screenshots for a widescreen device???

Anyway, just wanted to make people aware that, although not at all necessarily intentional, there is definitely misinformation in those posts. If you want to know the true state of GP2X homebrew, most of the developers hang out at http://www.gp32x.com/board/index.php or of course there are the related sections here.

That is all, hope I didn't offend anybody...

1. I never said that.
2. Sorry but not true.

Well, the XGP has made it 100% so not getting a GP2X, and it does look pretty good. I might still get one, but the reason I like homebrew on the PSP is that it IS a commercial product, and costs less than it is worth. The XGP is effective, and I never knew that the GP2X didn't come from the creators of GP32. However, you are advertising consoles on a PSP forum, and at the start I was angry, but it was a good idea. Gonna appeal to lots of people. And you are a complete babe (guessing that is you in the pic) so I am gonna get an XGP if I can :p

Yep, that's what everybody is saying because there is nothing to criticise about the XGP...it's too perfect.

And design is just user's opinion...lol

OMFG youngjoonshi will you please stop!!

your on a PSP forum and you are flooding this thread with adverts for products that no one on here wants / cares about!!

people are happy with their PSPs and like having a nice BIG AND KNOWN brand, produced by a very reputable company in Sony, so whilst they DO care about the future development of the PSP they are otherwise unlikely to be bothered with all this crap!

by all means, start anonther thread on "alternatives to the PSP" and watch as a few PSP-owning wierdos diss their own purchase-choice, but leave the rest of us to get on discussing the PSP without having to put up with this rubbish!

sorry to rant, but geez, its taken me ages to get through this thread with all those massive picture posts about something completely off-topic.
