Step1: Install the newest DivX 5 codec. Download Virtual Dub.

Step2: Open Virtual Dub, then open your video.
File -> Open video file -> Select your video

Step3: Select DivX5 codec, use bitrate of ~500kbit/s. Use lower bitrate for animated
stuff (~300kbit/s) and higher bitrate for VCD quality on wide screen movies (~700kbit/s at 23.97fps).
Video -> Compression -> DivX 5 Codec -> Set your bitrate

Step4: Resize the video to 352x288 or smaller resolution.
Video -> Filters -> Add -> Resize -> 320x???
Keep your aspect ratio! (320/Width=x), (x*Height=NewHeight)
Your width must be a multiple of 4.

Step5: Set audio on full processing mode.
Audio -> Full processing mode

Step6: Set audio conversion to 22050 high quality conversion.
Audio -> Conversion.

Step7: Select Mpeg layer-3 audio codec, use 40kbit/s 22050hz stereo.
Audio -> Compression ->MPEG Layer-3

Step8: Save your video as an avi file.
File -> Save AVI.

Step9: Download the DcDivX4Dummies Selfboot Kit.
Put your Dc-DivX encoded videos in the kit's Dcdivx folder.
Click on either makedj or makenero.bat. It will create a .cdi or .nrg image after a few minutes.
Burn the created image with Nero or DiscJuggler.

That resolutin is kind of low.
What other codecs are there that have decent compression yet can play 640x480 at 24fps?

also, what about widescreen video?

using your guide, could the resolution be set to say
400x192 instead of sacrificing performance with letterboxes - will it just appear stretched on 4:3 screen?

this guide if for a very old version of dcdivix. Newer versions might play higher res version. You can test by changing the resize values to something bigger

Is there any chance to play Videos with synchron sound on the dreamcast nowadays?

if you encode the video right the Synchronization will be right

Hmm i did everything just like in the tutorial.
Perhaps my my Divx codec version is the problem: 5.2.1
Okay I'll try with 5.0
