what do i need to play mp3 and view pictures on the DS what is the sound quality like i would also like to try some homebrew apps and games its or do you think a dedicated mp3 player would be better

Unless she wants to emulate, just using it for an MP3 player and picture viewer can be a waste. So if just MP3s, go with the dedicated player. If not, get some homebrew utils.
