View Full Version : GBA Port

May 12th, 2004, 05:33
well I have ported a GBA emulator to the Dreamcast(based on Visual Boy Advance). I will hopefully be releasing it soon. I just have to get some stuff cleaned up and hopefully get sound working, and speed playable and figuring out the license GPL etc.

I have played a couple of Public domain roms and 1 commercial rom (Super Mario World ~ 4meg).

I tried an 8 meg rom but it ran out of memory, don't know if that is fixable yet.

Wow the whole scene will be watching this development :)

Homebrew GBA on the Dreamcast :)

May 12th, 2004, 07:00
any chance of a screenshot :)

May 12th, 2004, 07:07
I don't have anyway to take one, I don't know where my digital camera is. I could send you the binary of what I got so far and you could take some if you wanted.

TroyIf you've got a serial cable or a BBA, you can add vid_screen_shot() to your program to enable you take a screenshot.

May 12th, 2004, 10:13
cool stuff!

May 12th, 2004, 10:52
This is insane, they say it couldn't be done, I thought they were telling the truth but
they were wrong dead wrong, here fellow DC gamers, the ultimate of emulation we DC gamers
never thought possible, feature the GBA! now I am truly convinced that if the skills of
coders are unbelieveable any type of emulation is possible on DC (except amiga,lol:} }
I never thought it would happen, you made most DC dreamers dream come true. GPF! Keep up the
good work man, from the screen Ian took, really impressive bro, don't work to hard and keep
up the outstanding look of this GBA emulation that we never thought possible.

May 12th, 2004, 11:29
This is insane, they say it couldn't be done, I thought they were telling the truth but
they were wrong dead wrong...

You and Cless are the most confused people I've ever seen. Do you guys listen? No one said it was impossible, anything is possible.

Good stuff, Troy. I've always been a big proponent of GBA emulation on the DC but I'm not going to knock it, either. I look forward to downloading this emu & the tons of homebrew stuff available for it. This will be good news for the GBA scene, also. Someone might want to drop a bug in there ear or link this thread to a topic on the HAM site ;) Tubooboo will be impressed.

May 12th, 2004, 11:56
Wraggster, could you enable a function in this forum to put the screens here? This is very interesting and those pics aren't available now (bandwidth problem) *???

May 12th, 2004, 17:55
try some homebrew mate , i need fresh reports :)

just so you all know the GBA homebrew scene is massive :)

this is the best news for fans of homebrew :)

May 12th, 2004, 19:34
I will It's 4 27 am Bit sleepy Got to burn it to a cd each time then send the bin. Also working on neogeo cd at the same time..

Be a lot more to report today. Started on tests at the witching hour lol

May 12th, 2004, 19:36
damn its late there, dont know how you aussies stay up so late :P

May 12th, 2004, 22:31
clessy finally banned lol. ian's starting to keep the same hours as me =P

this year seems to be the year of the emulator lol. First SFC, then NeoCD and now this.

May 12th, 2004, 22:36
hows your neopocket emu quzar?

any news, screens updates

May 12th, 2004, 22:56
ah, i have been updated news on Dcemulation but i forgot about here :P

i have gotten it to compile so far, but not to run properly. it shows up a white square that is the right size, and it lets me go double size too but so far the only thing i cant do is load a rom. some glitch in my setup i think... as soon as i can get rom loading (which is like 4 lines of code!) then it will most likely work. until then ...

May 12th, 2004, 23:19
Heh, what Clessy did this time? :o

May 12th, 2004, 23:22
I wonder what speed GB/GBC games will run at too :)

also zipped roms, would zipped roms cause a loss of performance.

May 13th, 2004, 00:18
nah zipped roms wouldnt make any difference to performance.

May 13th, 2004, 00:22
cool stuff :)

May 13th, 2004, 02:11
I just upgraded my 1and1 package (primarily to add someone :-* ) but I don't forsee any problems via bandwith when this is released ;)

May 13th, 2004, 02:25
we will support you as official mirror if ya need it will :)

May 13th, 2004, 02:27
Cool :) *Btw, Storm-Studios might be down for a few hours.

EDIT: Nevermind. *I'm going to have to get something resolved with 1and1. *Instead of upgrading my current package and evidently ordered a new package. *Hopefully this can be resolved in a couple of days.

May 13th, 2004, 06:45
Wooooooooooow this is so impresive, but this emulator will funtion at full speed in the future or at decent speed?

Anyway this is fantastic ;D

May 13th, 2004, 14:27
Report out of the 10 metafox told me about

M-Type-Marsu-Version05b works pretty slow, great game uses some grafix from pulstar neogeo cd game allthou! Game is a rtype clone quiet well done i like it Really suprizing games are pretty dam good.
pics here.

More to follow

Gbc and gb roms load but only display a white screen so they dont work on this at the moment.

Im only posting homebrew screen shots from now on been told it's best thing to do..

May 13th, 2004, 22:11
Any new newsworthy news GPF to keep eveyone on their toes :)

May 13th, 2004, 22:58
None yet, I fell asleep last night :) and have been to busy at work today to look at anything.

I will need to design a website for the GBA emulator release, and my website could definetly use a facelift though, so if anyone could help out, I want to incorporate what I have now with new html etc.

May 13th, 2004, 23:40
this emu looks promising and looks great with those screenshots, cant wait for a release. ;D

May 14th, 2004, 00:55
Official forum up

May 14th, 2004, 07:18
just a quick update.

I finally got a rom directory listing and selection working, now my alpha testers(IAN and wragster) won't have to burn one homebrew game at a time to test them out.

May 14th, 2004, 08:09
From the top ten here are the pics so-far

Unofficial Blues Brothers GBA Remake, The v.0.03 (PD)

Pretty neat remake use to remember playing this on the c64
it was pretty good on that this has some improvements and
is fun to play.

Speed was very slow on it

Dangerous Xmas (Fixed Version) by Spoutnick Team

Here's a good game has the classic feel and in a christmas mode.
I did not see the controls being all the Changed or better as posted in
the thread it played well just like Rick does. Very good looking and nice

Speed was a touch faster then the blues brothers not playable

Ive posted about this one it's a good rtype clones uses grafix from
pulstar i would never have spoted that if i dont use that game as a test on neogeo cd project. Still very good and nice clone ive played it a bit now.
Waves of fighters can be a little the same after a while.

Speed was better then the other to games Still not playable at this stage.

The Tragical Historie of Rodion and Rosalind by Bertil Hoerberg

THis game is a real winner to me very nice Rpg type action game looked very close to retail game. Only a few problems it's more a demo would be nice to see a finshed version one day

here's some info from the author

A great long epic quest spanning over five minutes of gameplay!
A revolutionary action filled battle system!
Not very beautious graphics in full 2D!
Two different endings!

Sound works i can almost make out the tune. Speed was very slow.

I think the speed for most is between 4 to 10 fps at a guess Sound on or off makes no change to the speed.

Here's part of my report so far. On the homebrew top ten metafox told me about

May 14th, 2004, 08:17
Well that's nice, you should try ORN, a metroid remake, but instead of playing with Samus Aran, you are some kind of alien mercenary...really nice too ;)

Can get it there : http://www.cs.rit.edu/~tjh8300/Orn/

Here's a screenshot:

May 14th, 2004, 16:11
that game is cool but when you die the game is already over.hopefully that game gets updated ;D

May 17th, 2004, 13:39
Thanx, VampiricS!

May 17th, 2004, 18:30
iTs progressing nicely, lets hope GPF has some more info on status for all the fans :)

May 20th, 2004, 00:57
I would just like to know where do you people get those homebrew roms? They look awesome, I've been around many GBA Homebrew pages but havent saw them yet ???

Wizards, M-Type, and the 3D one look specially interesting.

May 20th, 2004, 01:09
http://www.pdroms.com ;)

May 20th, 2004, 07:22
Well theres a new private beta out, im sure Ian has already tried it, i cant till i get home tonight, got work :( then ill ppost my findings :)

to Ian :)

if you would like to post your findings as news on the front page then im sure i and others would really appreciatte that, im especially insterested in sound but also speed and controller info.

May 20th, 2004, 11:30
I didn't realize there were beta's on the ftp. Troy, you mind if I take a look?

May 20th, 2004, 13:37
EDIT: Thanks for adding me as an alpha tester Troy. ;)

May 20th, 2004, 14:33
Ok I have added Storminator16 and Metafox as alpha testers for the private alpha, with frameskip and throttling its getting close for some homebrew games having the appearance of full speed.

May 20th, 2004, 16:21
great , at least you can get many different viewpoints,

also to Storminator, Metafox and GPF, if you ever need or would like newsposting access to promote your work releases etc then ill gladly let you have it :)
