3 FAQ [Frequently Asked Questions]

1 Guide:
1.1 Installation
1. Download the latest version of the ‘Capcom Play System 2 Emulator for the Sony PlayStation Portable' from NJ's website [Here (http://nj-emu.hp.infoseek.co.jp/)].

2. Unzip the ‘*.zip’ you have just downloaded from NJ’s Capcom Play System 2 Emulator site.

3. Once you have unzipped the ‘*.zip’ file you have downloaded, you should have the following files & folders:

*- File |- Directory
\GAMELIST_CPS2.TXT*
\README_CPS2.TXT*
\RESOURCE_JP.ZIP*
|CPS2PSP
CPS2PSP\EBOOT.PBP*
CPS2PSP\ZIPNAME.CPS2*
CPS2PSP\ROMINFO.CPS2*
|ROMCNV
ROMCNV\CPS2CONV.BAT*
ROMCNV\CPS2CONV_ALL.BAT*
ROMCNV\README_CPS2.TXT*
ROMCNV\ROMCNV_CPS2.EXE*
ROMCNV\ROMINFO.CPS2*
ROMCNV\ZIP_CACHE_BATCH_FILE.ZIP*
4. Now create two folders; one named “ROMS” and another named “CACHE”, and place them inside the “CPS2PSP” folder. You should now have the following folder structure:

CPS2PSP\
CPS2PSP\ROMS\
CPS2PSP\CACHE\

5. Now connect your ‘Sony PlayStation Portable’ to your computer, and set your ‘Sony PlayStation Portable’ to ‘USB Mode’ by going to ‘Settings’ in the PlayStation Portable’s XMB and selecting ‘USB Connection’.

6. Navigate your way to ‘X: \PSP\GAME\’ and insert the “CPS2PSP” folder into the “GAME” folder. Your ‘Sony PlayStation Portable’s’ memory stick should now look like this:

[X- Letter of your ‘Sony PlayStation Portable’s’ drive]

X: \PSP\GAME\CPS2PSP\
X: \PSP\GAME\CPS2PSP\EBOOT.PBP*
X: \PSP\GAME\CPS2PSP\ROMINFO.CPS2*
X: \PSP\GAME\CPS2PSP\ZIPNAME.CPS2*
X: \PSP\GAME\CPS2PSP\CACHE\
X: \PSP\GAME\CPS2PSP\ROMS\
[Do not disconnect your Sony PlayStation Portable!]

1.2 ROM Conversion
(*- ROM zip name)
[In order for ‘MOST’ Capcom Play System 2 ROMs to work with this emulator they must be passed through a converter in order to get their ‘*.cache’!]

1. Open the folder named “ROMCNV” and run the program 'ROMCNV_CPS2.EXE'.

2. A ‘Command Prompt’ window should have loaded saying “Please Select ROM file.” and a navigation window saying “Select zipped ROM file.” Locate your zipped ROM file in this window and click open.

3. Please wait while the converter creates a ‘*.cache’ file for your ROM.
[This should take about 20~30 seconds or so depending on ROM size.]
[NOTE: Use a complete ROM set, or the converter will give you an error.]

4. Once the conversion process is complete press ‘Enter’ to exit. Your ‘*.cache’ should now be in a folder named “CACHE” which is located inside the “ROMCNV” folder.

1.3 ROM Installation
1. Now navigate yourself to your ‘Sony PlayStation Portable’s’ drive, and then to the “X:\PSP\GAME\CPS2PSP” folder.

2. In the “X:\PSP\GAME\CPS2PSP” folder you will see the two folders you created: “ROMS” & “CACHE”. Place your ROM file,’*.ZIP’, inside the “ROMS” folder, and then place the cache file,’*.CACHE’, you got from the ‘ROMCNV_CPS2.EXE’ program inside the “CACHE” folder.

3 FAQ [Frequently Asked Questions]
Q: Why doesn’t [Insert Game Title Here] want to load?
A: Certain games may not run unless you have 2 different ‘region’ versions of it, or a specific ‘region’ version of it. A good example of this would be “Marvel Vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes.” If you can find a complete (US) ROM set, then the game might work, but if you have the complete (Euro) ROM set of it alone it will not work. In cases like these you will need both a complete ROM set (Euro) and a non-complete (US) ROM set. The non-complete ROM sets do not have to be converted for ‘cache’.

Q: Why do I keep running out of memory when I try loading [Insert Game Title Here]?
A: This occurs when the emulator is being ran through a boot loader. I suggest you downgrade you’re ‘Sony PlayStation Portable’ to ‘System Software’ version ‘1.50’, and then upgrade to a custom firmware of your choice.

Q: Is there any way in which I can get [Insert Game Title Here] to load without a second region?
A: Technically no, but you can decrease the amount of “*.zip’ files that are presented in the ROM selection screen of the emulator. A complex method of doing so is located [Here ( http://forums.qj.net/f-rom-discussion-26/t-cps2psp-more-space-saving-disable-dual-region-boot-82752.html.)]. A much simpler method would be to unzip both a complete ROM set and a non-complete ROM set, then take all of the files which were extracted from both compressed folders and compress them as a ‘*.zip’ file. Once they are compressed rename the newly created ‘*.zip’ file to the name of the non-complete ROM set.

Q: Can I run “Marvel Vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes” on this emulator?
A [English]: You cannot play "Marvel Vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes" on the Capcom Play System 2 hardware.
A [German]: Sie können nicht "Wunder gegen Capcom 2 spielen: Neues Alter der Helder "auf den Capcom Spiel-System 2 Kleinteilen.

Someone posted this site in the cps1 thread before it's quite useful for knowing what games run on what hardware. Here is the CPS2 list http://coinop.org/arcadesystem.aspx/036d3688-d593-421a-9ee9-6f37e9ad92c1 I'm not sure if it's 100% but it will give you some idea what games will run with this emulator.

Yeah, that site tells you what MAME ROMs will run on a CPS 2 Emulator.

1.5 is best, I think. BUMP!!!

www.cps2shock.com has a more detailed game list, with screenshots...its been down every now and then recently but its a very old site and is reliable...

also, once the cache file is made and the rom zip files are in the rom folder, you can edit the zip files and remove all files .13 and up....leaving .01-.12...as the cache files are consisted of files .13 and up, and arent needed once the cache is made...will save you TONS OF SPACE.

nice tutorial btw =)

Also, I noticed some people asking for cache files on MAC OS X. I think that if you have a MAC you can use DOS Box which will emulate DOS on a MAC. Can someone with a MAC try DOS Box out and tell me if it works, so I can include it in the guide??

I can play Marvel Vs. Capcom just with the cache.zip and the original mvsc.zip rom file... I just name mvsc.zip to mvscu.zip....I keep hearing people need two diferent region roms to make it run. Just do what I do and you'll only need one.:)

but it still seems kinda buggy, or is it my rom? because it runs a lil bit too fast

What would you guys say are the best settings for Marvel vs. Capcom? Here's mine...but before I go, I do play it with the sound OFF, cause it's way to jumpy and jittery with the sound on...It always halts play for brief continuous seconds...I hate that, but well it's a beta emulator...and an amazin one at that.

- Raster effects ON
- Video Sync OFF
- Auto Frameskip DISABLED (it gets really jumpy if enabled)
- Show FPS ON (with these settings you get constant 60fps during battles)
- 60fps Limit ON
- PSP clock 333Mhz

...remember these settings are with the sound OFF

how do you check the settings for it?
is there a shortcut key cuz i couldnt find one and i was too lazy to check the readme cuz i was excited playing
MvsC.

Pressing SELECT and START when the game is viewable and running, will take you to the emulator's Menu. From there you can play with the settings and other stuff.

BTW, I don't think your Marvel vs. Capcom rom is buggy...It just needs the settings adjusted, that's all. Keep in mind that this emulator (even as awesome as it is) is still in it's early (beta) stages, and Marvel vs. Capcom is one of those games that demands the most from it, since it runs many cycles at very fast speeds for even the PSP to handle...so don't expect it to run perfectly, although it is very playable with the settings I posted above.

Good luck.

BTW, I have a question...Is it possible to put border pictures to show up while playing the games in Non-fulscreen resolutions...just wanna make those black bars more colorful, that's all. If it is possible, what do I name the pics as? and in what directory do they go in?

ok, i blame it on windows 98 but when i run the converter exe, all i get is
'please select rom file
press any key to exit'
nothing else and if i press anything, obviously as the last line whould tell, it closes
is it me doing something wrong?

EDIT:NVM, all i had to do was drag the zip onto the exe and it worked:rolleyes:

That's weird...you don't get a directory search wizard window? It's probably Windows 98 then, like you say.

Anyways, since this is a CPS2PSP emulator guide thread, I just thought I'd point you guys to a handfull of cheats for these games...after all, the fighting ones have tons more playable characters than you'd ever imagine. Just click under the starting letter of the game you're looking for. Cheers!

Anyways, since this is a CPS2PSP emulator guide thread, I just thought I'd point you guys to a handfull of cheats for these games...after all, the fighting ones have tons more playable characters than you'd ever imagine. Just click under the starting letter of the game you're looking for. Cheers!

Hey thanks for the top tip on cheats for acracde games! :D

I knew a few cheats but this site seems to have em all! I was able to do the Akuma cheat before for xmen vs street fighter (probably the easiest secrect to know), but the additional info for selecting the Hulk and Shadow is great! :)

I'll try some more games in a mo...

hey, awesome emulator!! THANKS. i appreciate it. I love it and am happy cause i actually managed to get it all working...and trust me, that is some feat!

One thing though.... how can I exit the emulator?? when I press the home button and yes, nothing happens. So do I have to switch off the PSP everytime I want to get out? pressing start and select gets me to the emu menu, but I can't seem to get out from there....or am i just too stupid....

PLease help me with that one :D

This emu has me busy busy busy all day. :)
...I have a question about a game though...
It's called "Warzard" and most people know it as "Red Earth"...I was just wondering if this game falls under CPS2 or CPS3? I've never actually played the game...just seen the awesome screens in awe...The Sprites quality on it really looks breathtaking. Can somebody let me know if they've ran it succesfully on this Emulator, and how well does it play? ...I'm still searching the net for it, so if you know how or where to get it, please contact me by PM.

Thank you.

EDIT/EDIT/EDIT/EDIT/EDIT/EDIT/EDIT/EDIT/EDIT/EDIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I've found the MAME rom for Warzard (warzard.zip) , but I have yet to get home from work and Convert/test it out on the latest CPS2 emu....Anybody know if it will work? All I've noticed is that it has similar file structure than all my other CPS2 zipped roms.

EDIT 2/EDIT 2/EDIT 2/EDIT 2/EDIT 2/EDIT 2/EDIT 2/EDIT 2/EDIT 2/EDIT 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NEVERMIND ALL THE TALK HERE:p I just found out it's a CPS3 game...sux, I was really looking forward to playing this awesome looking game....I guess I thought it was CPS2 because chibi Tessa shows up in Pocket Fighter...a CPS2 game... Oh well... I'll probably be checking the game out on my PC anyways...

Theres some crazy fatality moves in this game! ...splitting the character in two, organ removal, limb slicing, decapitation, artery rupture etc. ...All very 'Mortal Combat' like for a Capcom game!:D

TOASTY!!! Heh...Yeah, this game rocks! I've been pretty busy playing it and ripping sprites on my laptop for the last two days, and all I gotta say it's a real shame CAPCOM hasn't ported this rare gem over to any of the Home or portable consoles...I'm a HUGE Capcom follower...I've bought many of their original games, their awesome Annual Illustration Books...and a few times even Street Fighter & Resident Evil toys...But as of late, they're not doing much to impress me.They're way too busy making money out of their old, old, old, soooooo old stuff...which BTW we can already emulate and play for free.:) At least the Monster Hunter series keeps me busy nowadays, but I'd really like to see Solid Capcom Masterpieces like Capcom vs. SNK, Marvel vs. Capcom, Street Fighter III, Resident Evil, Onimusha and Devil May Cry games sometime in the future on PSP...How much would that rock?...I'm just kinda pissed at the fact that They're kinda turning into SNK when it comes to PSP...Huge Developer in the past, now a Huge "port-your-old-stuff" Developer...I mean, what NEW games have they brought to the PSP table that are not ports...Hmmmmm, let's see...Monster Hunter &.....Uh, that's it...well, the new 3D-like renders on Ghost and Goblin's and Megaman X were alright, but other than that, Capcom's releases on PSP have been pretty LAME.

It is strange that Wazard hasnt been ported yet, it really is a quality game too. I do agree with ya that they've gone a bit limp lately though (bar Monster hunter and GnG), but I've got faith in them eventualy delivering the goods in the futute! One port I'd love to see on PSP though (and I know it would be pushing the system a wee bit) is ResiEvil 4... I sooo love this game on the GC! :D

To be honest if it wasnt for NJ's CPS1&2 masterpeices, I would have been very grateful right now with what they are releasing with the 'Capcom Classics' games on PSP (I never thought I'd have arcade perfect games on the go). We'll just have to wait for Capcom to catch up and resume pushing the boundries with some new 'great' titles. :)

Hey guys, since this is the tutorial thread, I was wondering if anybody knew if it was possible to have images come up in the emulators menu...You know, kinda like NJ's other emus...were you can have a custom image in the main menu BG and another custom image while the emulator is loading the game...I've tried naming some images like you would in his other emulators and putting them in the correct directory, but no cigar...It probably isn't implemented in to the emu, but I just thought I'd ask anyways.:p I know these two CPS emulators are a work of genious already to ask for much, but it's just that Capcom has waaaayyy too much AWESOME game art to miss out on without this option...If somebody implements GUI customization to the emus last released source, then I'll just have to start a whole new thread just about Custom Art for it...:p I happen to own CAPCOMS 4 art books, and a Hi Res Cannon scanner, and I'm more than willing to go scan happy for the scene:D ...You know what I mean...So about these custom pics, and a good coding/compiling hand who'd be willing to help out with this...

"If you build it, they will come".

No, adding a 'u' only works for mvsc.

To get xmen vs streetfighter to work I think you also need the parent roms on your mem stick. On mine i've got: xmvsf, xmvsfa and xmvsfur1.

Out of all the big Vs games on CP2 'Xmen vs Streetfighter' plays the best for me out of all of em, with no stuttering at all during the game!

Most games over 20mbs lags in this emulator when it constatly loads from the memory stick... when it doesn't load, it's smooth... and it only loads the first time the animation is played, then it's in the memory or something....

How can I make it not lag when it's loading while playing?. I read that someone had the same problem and he said he solved it by formatting his MS with the format option in the menu on PSP, I did that and it still loads while playing.

Unfortunetly a few of the bigger Vs games do lag. My fav game 'Xmen vs street fighter' doesnt really lag at all, and Marvel Vs Capcom is pretty good too... if youve got a 1.5 or 2.71se PSP make sure you have the final Kernel Mode version of the emulator as this runs the smoothest! :D

It only runs smooth when all the movies have been performed and therefore are in the memory.

I meant the rom file for the tow different games xmvsf and mvsc. I figured that part out as much. What I want to know is how you can tell which files you can delete, say for other games too besides the versus games.

Yes thats right. It always seems to get the files that have the extension ".13"~".20" I think its becuse those are the graphic files and it resizes or tries to reduce them so it can be playable on the PSP.

As for Wi-Fi keep your eye on Mike DX's forum and you will find out as he does not have a release date set yet atleast.

I've finally stumbled upon a game I can't figure out how to run on NJ's fabulous CPS2 emu:

Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition (Asia 040202)

It's on the support list, and I already now (Phoenix version) doesn't work...I can't get (Asia 040202) to work, that's my problem. I keep getting this error:

Here's the first few lines from the rom info in the emu folder, which I always use as a reference to see if the image needs to be combined with another region image...but apparently, this isn't the case with Hyper SF II Anniversary Ed. (Asia)

FILENAME( hsf2a, cps2, 0, 1, 0, 0 )
REGION( 0x400000, CPU1, 0 )

And here's the list of files and sizes inside my hsf2a.zip:

I've gotten all games to run except this one...I tested it on MAME and KAWAKS and it's fine, but for some reason it's not working on NJ's last update...didn't try any previous updates either.

Hope this info can help you help me:D

Further to what we discussed in the other thread, you can run it in Debug mode but additionally I'm pretty sure the XOR tables for this game were only released very recently. If you haven't got these then I'm sure including them would give you the "this game cannot be run" error (which debug mode would bypass).

I ran the emulator thru IRshell, the best homebrew Shell substitute application for the PSP by Ahman. You can take snapshots of anything on screen with the musical note button. Also, if you have experience with .prx plugin files, this can also be done with a few of those. It all outputs to the memorystick afterwards.

I understand. Just got the XOR tables for it, but it still ain't working...I'm getting the trditional "this game cannot be run" error like you just said. I don't know squat about tweaking or even dealing with source files...it all sounds like bad Latin to me, sorry.

Interesting, this game came out in 2004 and is very recent to emulation, I believe its because of its strict security structure. Anyways as stated before debug mode should get you past the error, but cant some good editing of the XOR tables get you past it as well? Ill look into it a bit more, Ill try to do some research on this.

Viola! After hours of trying to get "Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition (Asia 040202), Phoenix Edition" to execute along with "Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition (Asia 040202)," I got them both to work without a "Debug" included version of CPS2PSP. It seems "tsurumaru" was wrong, their is no need for a "Debug" included version of CPS2PSP in order for this game to execute. The "Phoenix Edition" is quite complicated to get working, and is not worth it as their are many extreme graphical displacements. While "Asia 040202" edition is extremely simple, just download the complete Asian ROM-set, then reconstruct it with the XOR files included in the ROM-set.

Downloads:
-Please use the latest version of CPS2PSP which is "CPS2PSP 1.66," which can be obtained here (http://dl.qj.net/CPS2PSP-1.66-PSP-Emulators/pg/12/fid/11954/catid/502).
-The XOR files can be obtained here (http://cps2shock.emu-france.com/), but remember you will need to obtain the complete ROM-set on your own.

Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition (Asia 040202) [XOR Files]

When you download the XOR "*.zip" file, within that compressed folder there should be 3 files.

Files Included:
hs2ax.03
hs2ax.04
readme.txt

Unzip the compressed folder and drag the files hs2ax.03 & hs2ax.04 to your complete ROM-set.

Once you have transfered the files to your complete ROM-set you should have the following folder structure for your complete ROM-set.

Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition (Asia 040202) [Folder Structure]

Hi there everyone....I just modded my PSP today so I am relatively new at this whole thing. I was able to get some PS1 games running fine on my PSP, but the CPS2PSP emulator seems to be a whole new issue. Here is my problem: I am running the 2.6.0 version of the emulator, but every time I go to start the emulator, it kicks be out saying "The game could not be started. 8002014C" I have followed every step and I have my directories set up as follows:

[GAME]

-cps2psp
->CACHE
->ROMS
->rominfo.cps2
->zipname.cps2
->EBOOT.PBP

-cps2psp%
->EBOOT.PBP

Does anyone have any suggestions or guidance for this n00b? Thank you very much in advance and sorry to be a bother.

I updated the guide to its final version, just wanted to bump this to let you guys know. This is final because as far as I can tell there won't be an update, for the emulator, for quite a while.
