I have been homebrewin' my PSP for over a year now, so I know the dangers of popping a new game in and having it update the firmware.

Is that the same for the DS? There is a game coming out that I want to get in a couple months, but I am using Passykey 1. I'd hate to see it update my firmware and lock me out.

Can it be updated this way, or is the firmware never going to change for my system?

The DS itself doesn't have firmware updates like the PSP.

Hey I live in Canada! Don't say damn Canada unless your making something funny and it's not Canada's fault, it's the delivery guys' fault! :p Hehe, I checked my grammar before I posted this. :D Oh well damn Canada rocks!

Instructions:

1. Insert a DS game in NDS slot.
2. Turn up your DS and open Pictochat, room A.
3. Now remove the NDS cartridge from the NDS slot (don't worry, you can't do much harm).
4. Both screens should turn in the same color.

If the screens don't turn YELLOW or MAGENTA (and you're not using iQue DS), it is a safe bet that it's PassME1 and WiFiME compatible.

The color 'chart':

- NDS-V1: DS will freeze, when you remove the cart.
- NDS-V2: Grayish Blue (thanks, tepples)
- NDS-V3: Dark Green (Note! A silver DS bought in MK:DS bundle is most probably NOT installed with FW4!)
- NDS-V4: Yellow
- NDS-V5: Magenta
- iQue FW: Dark Green
- FM-V1-6: Dark Green

From versions 4 and up you need a Passme3 or magic key

I heard ONCE of a firmware update using Mario Kart DS WiFi, but I've never experienced it and ive played MKDS online all the time on my FW-1 DS (well FlashMe v7 now, but it was FW-1 when i used toplay it all the time) and it never updated
