Epic's focus on Cliff Bleszinski's Gears of War series has starved the Unreal series of the attention it deserves.

So confessed Epic president Mike Capps, who told Industry Gamers he thinks the company should be spending more time with its existing franchises.

"We have a couple other major franchises that we've not been paying attention to," said Capps. "It's been a long time since we shipped an Unreal game, and it's an awfully loved franchise that we hold pretty dear here," he said.

The most recent Unreal Tournament game was Unreal Tournament 3 released on PS3 in 2008.

"We haven't been giving it the attention it deserves because we've been focusing on Gears of War and we're still a relatively small company," he went on to admit.

"At some point you wonder why we don't rename the engine the Gears Engine or something," joked Capps. We were thinking the same thing.

Capps continued with encouraging words for Unreal fans hoping for Unreal Tournament 4. "We've been sort of focused on making new properties, which you've seen with Shadow Complex, BulletStorm and Infinity Blade, but sometimes I think just as a businessman that maybe we should be spending some more time with our existing franchises."

Fellow Epic big man Mark Rein recently stated his belief that the Unreal Engine is still "the best" engine tech today.
