Works for PSP Firmwares 1.0-2.71, unless you have TA-082.

I know there are simular posts, but I worked kinda hard at finding all the right links and so forth, so here we go: Thank you Dark_Alex.

***Note: This involves writing to the flash. If you follow my steps and you do not have a TA-082 PSP, this will work. You should have a decent size memory stick, at least half a gig.***

If you DO have a TA-082, follow the steps and stop at step 3 to enable basic homebrew on your consol! It uses the TIFF exploit to allow you access to some homebrew untill you turn it off or untill you take the battery out.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First, this hack does require that you do NOT have a TA-082, so you must either already have a version 1.5 firmware psp, or check to see if you have a TA-082.
Step 1. Check to see if you have a TA-082 psp.
This is easy. Open your umd drive, turn it so that the screen is facing away from you, and see if you can see some upside down numbers in the upper right hand corner. Here is a link for pictures and a more thorough description.
Step 2. If you have version 1.5 Firmware, skip to step 6. Otherwise, upgrade to firmware version 2.71. I can not link to the files to do this (becuase I think it is illegal), but you can search google and find it pretty quickly.
Step 3. Use this free, legal software to install Hen C on your 2.71 psp, which allows you to run some homebrew. Hombrew Enabler uses a TIFF to install extra files to your Flash, not alter them, very little risk of bricking. After running it once, it never rights to your flash again, and you can activate it by just opening that picture again.. See link below.
(this has no dumps, and is legal.)
Stop here if you have a TA-082psp. Please.
Step 4. Install this generic downgrader to your psp, see bottom of post for help. All you need to run this is the eboot.pbp update for your version of psp, so go online and find the 1.5 eboot.pbp. (while you are at it, you can save some time by also finding the 2.71 eboot.pbp). Since it does not supply the eboots, this is a legal program. On a side note, you can downgrade to ANY level with an eboot, even to 2.6, 2.0, 2.7, etc. As long as you stay above or at 2.0, even those with a TA-082 can do this. Follow the included ReadMe instructions.
Step 5. If you haven't already, go to photos and start HenC. You may need to try a few times the first time you do this, but it will work. Then go to the generic downgrader, and run it. DO NOT TURN OFF OR RESET YOUR PSP, just wait untill you see a screen covered with different languages informing you that the psp needs to recover. Go through the set up, and you have version 1.5 psp now!
<you can always stop here if you want, and have 1.5>
Step 6. if you already had 1.5, this is where you start from! Whee!
The below link is called the "1.5 helper" program. It will make a firmware dump of your current firmware (in this case, 1.5). Install it (/psp/game/), run it. This is legal because this is your firmware: but please do not share this file. (this program will make a folder in the root of your memory card. Cool.) You can delete this program after you run it once.
Step 7. Almost done. Go to the below link, and download the "Firmware 2.71 Special Edition" Zip. Install to your game folder (/psp/game/). It comes with instructions, but heck, why not write them again:
http://tinyurl.com/h4352
Step 7.a Get a copy of the eboots to update the psp to 1.5 and 2.71, and rename them to : 150.PBP and 271.PBP.
Place them inside the folder (/psp/game/seupdmaker).
Run the program. This doesnt write to flash, all this does is make a file called DATA.DXAR inside the folder (/psp/game/seupdmaker).
Step 7.b Move DATA.DXAR to the folder (/psp/game/271seflasher), and make sure your psp is charged ABOVE 75% (100 is fine).
Step 7.c Run the program "2.71 SE-A Firmware Install". DO NOT REBOOT, SHUT OFF, OR REMOVE MEMORY STICK. Please.
Step 8. Done. Create a NEW folder inside (/psp/) called (/psp/game150). Any programs placed in there will be run with the 1.5 firmware, any in game will be run with 2.71.
Help me!:
1. Your links dont work, Jerk!
Oh, sorry, Just search google for the programs you need:
~2.71 eboot psp
~1.50 eboot psp
~"Homebrew Enabler for 2.71 revision C", also known as "Hen C"
~"Generic Downgrader for 2.71" By Dark_Alex, who made most of this.
~"1.50 Helper" psp
~Firmware 2.71 Special Edition!, also known as "2.71 se"
2. How do I 'install' homebrew? Huh?
Easy. If the zip folder has a folder called "msroot" or "psp", just dig into it untill you find either one or two folders with the name of the homebrew you want.
If it is for 1.0, it will just be (name).
if it is for 1.5, it will be two folders, (name), and (name%).
Unzip these folders to your (/psp/game/) folder, and they will be available under the game option on your menu (check the memory stick option).
On a side note, after this upgrade you can also put 1.5 and 1.0 homebrew into the folder labled (/psp/game150/). Those will run on the 1.5 firmware version, but show up with the rest.
3. How do I install. Hen C?
This one is fun. To quote the readme:
"Copy all contents inside MS_ROOT to the root of your memory stick."
So if your psp is E:, copy the files to (E: ). Done.
To run the program, go to your photo viewer, and choose the folder called HENC.
"The first time you run (Hen C), you will see quickly a blue screen, and after that a screen that can be of two colors:
* Red: the files couldn't be written to the flash (it hapens a few times). Just keep trying.
* Green: The files were written succesfully. After that, the xmb will be rebooted. Now you can run the homebrew in format prepared for 2.71."
After that, it will just work. Period.
4. How do I know if "1.50 Helper" worked?
If your psp is E:, there is now a folder (E:/DOWNDATER). Neat.
5. What if I (someday) have a problem with version 2.71 se?
When you turn it on, hold down the right sholder button. This opens a menu that can either repair it, return it to version 1.5, hide corrupt icons, hide the psp bling thing, etc. Check it out sometime. It is sorta an "unbricker". Neat.
6. What if I wanna upgrade?
Use the "Generic Downgrader for 2.71" to downgrade to 1.5 (or just use the menu from holding down the right sholder button during boot), then upgrade as normal.
7. How do I get rid of corrupt icons?
2 ways that I use: 1, use the right sholder button menu (hold down during boot.). 2, rename the folders from (blah) to (__SCE__blah) and from (blah%) to (%__SCE__blah%). Problem solved. Neat.
If I left anything out, let me know. All of this is done WITHOUT me linking to either firmware dumps or eboots, and all of the software belongs to their respective owners. I am greatful to them, and all I did was enjoy their software. ^_^ Very fun.
