This is the first time I’m making something for the psp homebrew scene.
I was very interested in the program PSP Memo Recorder of lteixeira so I was searching for a way to test this program without buying the SOCOM headset. I found a site for a “do it yourself psp headset adapter” but it wasn’t that clear to me so I figured it out myself.

In the next tutorial I’m showing with pictures how I made the adapter without soldering.

Things you need for making the adapter:

Scissors, cutting tang and isolation tape (I don’t like soldering but this is possible also).

2 female 3.5mm mini jack

http://www.vibe.masegate.nl/psp/female.jpg

1 four conductor 3.5mm mini jack (check ebay for ipod a/v cable or ps one a/v cable)

http://www.vibe.masegate.nl/psp/fourjack.jpg

Cut al the cables but leave enough space to connect them (or when you make a mistake or strip to much). Also strip all the cables and wires.
Only the coper wires can be twisted togheter.

It should look like this for the four conductor 3.5mm mini jack cable.

(all the coperwires can be twisted togheter)

The 2 female 3.5mm mini jacks must look like this.

http://www.vibe.masegate.nl/psp/femalelook.jpg

(all the coperwires can be twisted togheter)

One of the female 3.5mm mini jacks will become the microphone input.
LOOK OUT, TAKE ONLY ONE FEMALE 3.5 mm MINI JACK.
So take (just) one of the female 3.5mm mini jacks and cut the white wire. It’s not needed anymore.

http://www.vibe.masegate.nl/psp/nomorewhite.jpg

Make sure that the top/tip (the copper part) of the white cable does not make contact with the red cable or the copper wire.
(Twist the copper wires togheter)

The other female 3.5mm mini jack is needed for the stereo sound.
(Twist the copper wires togheter)

No we have the ingredients for make the adapter.
The next part is about twisting the right wire to the right wire.

Now you can twist all the (loose) copperwires togheter but the best is to do this last. In the next picture I didn't draw these copperwires because te all go togheter.
Make sure these twisted copper wires don't make contact with each other cables. Tape them if posible at the end.

This is how it should be connected/twisted.

some photo's

first the earphones (red to yellow, white to white. Tape these so they can't make contact with other cables, can't say this enough, hehe)

http://www.vibe.masegate.nl/psp/voorbeeld1.jpg

next is the microphone. It's getting hard now to twist it to the wires (theres not much space when you want to do it good and nice).

http://www.vibe.masegate.nl/psp/micro.jpg
(red to red. Tape these so they can't make contact with other cables)

they final result before taping it al togheter.

this what it looks like in action.

Hope somebody can really do something with this tutorial (and read it, my english isn't that good).
For me it works fine and can go on testing the newer PSP Memo Recorder's

Greetzzz Vibe :)

edit:

forgot to tell that this only works with the psp remote.

true, but you can make it less wires by cutting. Still for testing this works great.

Nice clear tutorial, however, I remember seeing another tutorial that showed you how to convert an xbox headset into a socom psp one. There was also another one that showed you how to turn your mobile phone headset/mic into a socom mic. I want to try that because I have those handy in the house. Now....If only I could get myself some solder and an iron.....

Didn't wanted to solder it. I have no time for that ;).
It's posible to do this with this tutorial. Don't twist the cable's just solder them togheter.

It took me about 30 minutes. That's also because I didn't knew how to start.

Yeah I went to maplins and bought a couple of adaptors to fit a condenser mic and used and audio/video cable/ipod cable it works great, but I wish my mic recording level was higher... maybe a better mic like the rode condencer mic.

That wasn't the point, the point was for people who don't have a headset to make an adaptor ;)

Hi, nice tutorial, just what I was looking for: no messing with solder.

Anyways, I'm doing this tutorial as I type, but I get lost in the part where before twisting the correct wires to each other.

to better ilustrate my question, here:

This part

And this part

What do I do with them? twist one with the other together?

Sorry, as you can see I'm an electronics n00b. Thanks for the guide :)

Works with everything that uses the Microfone? (sorry for the 'up' in the topic)

And, can I use it with just a microfone without the 'phone' (no headset)?

Thanks man great tutorial.

I already have the two female jacks (supprisingly the ones I had laying around are the exact same ones)

I am having a hard time finding a 4-conductor cable though, so far radioshack cant find it, I printed off the photo and I'll try again tomarrow
