MCV is reporting that UK game retailers took £73.9 million during the past week on game sales alone.
The total number of games sold hit 2,978,493, which represents an increase over the previous week's figures. Year-on-year, however, sales were down compared to the same week in 2010.
Unsurprisingly, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which became the Christmas number one this week (http://www.next-gen.biz/news/skyrim-takes-uk-christmas-number-one), was the biggest seller. Increased sales of Just Dance 3, Modern Warfare 3, Saints Row: The Third,Battlefield 3 and Need For Speed: The Run were also significant contributors.
The total means the week was the second biggest for the year so far in terms of sales, only beaten by the week in November during which Skyrim and Modern Warfare 3 launched (http://www.next-gen.biz/news/modern-warfare-3-tops-uk-chart) helping to net £120.8 million and a total of 3,289,421 sales.
The figures discount digital sales, so Skyrim's record breaking performance on Steam (http://www.next-gen.biz/news/skyrim-ships-10-million-breaks-steam-record) has not been included.
