Mario Kart 7 (http://www.edge-online.com/filter/all/tags/2349) is the Japanese all-formats number one for a fourth consecutive week, with its host platform 3DS (http://www.edge-online.com/filter/all/tags/884) continuing its dominance of the hardware charts.
The 3DS racer sold over 157,000 units to take its lifetime sales past 1.3 million. The next three spots are also occupied by 3DS games, with Monster Hunter Tri G becoming the third 3DS title, after Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land, to sell a million units in Japan.
Hardware sales in the week ending January 8 were once again dominated by 3DS, which has been the best-selling system in Japan every single week since last August's price cut. Sales rose by over 20 per cent week on week to 240,819 units.
Sales of PlayStation Vita (http://www.edge-online.com/filter/all/tags/883), which launched in Japan on December 17 (http://www.edge-online.com/news/vita-launches-japan), rose by 267 to 42,915 units. The device, however, slipped to fifth in the hardware charts, with Nintendo's ageing Wii selling 49,525 units and taking fourth spot behind PS3 and PSP.
