View Full Version : Bricked PSPs (and 2.8+ firmware psps)

Has anybody on here got a bricked, broken, smashed, or otherwise unusable psp?

I am going to try and unbrick a psp tomorrow lunchtime by installing a UP, flashing the NAND and then removing it again. If it works I could use the same chip over and over to unbrick PSPs. Could come in very handy.. Also the same method could be used to downgrade a 2.80+ psp back to 1.5 or even to 2.71SE

I'm just toying with the idea at the moment as I bet there are tons of bricked psps out there. I could fix them for a small fee, put 2.71SE or 1.5 back on, everybodys happy.

I'll let you know how long it takes for me to unbrick one tomorrow..

IF this DOES work..then it should work on unbricked psps too correct. If so i may talk to you after it has been done on a fully working 2.8.

Any idea on what it would cost to flash my 2.8 to 1.5?:)

MikeDX
November 1st, 2006, 23:26
Yeah there is no reason why it wouldnt work on a 2.8 or above firmware to downgrade to 1.5.

I'll try it on one of my psps that the umd drive doesnt work after i've unbricked "PSP 3"

Ok

Lunchtime I did the following

prepared board for soldering with guides (scraped off soldermask and cut track)

Tinned the FPC

Tinned a single pcb track

this all took about an hour, it is tiny work and it just takes ages. Hopefully I will get faster. Sadly I wont get another chance to do anything else now until monday.. oh well ;)

 Seems pretty tedious. I would kill my psp with soldering. Hope it turns out well:)

how do psps get bricked anyway is it from downgrading??

mostly, but there have been a few forced bricks from updating, a few accidental bricks from updating, and some partial bricks from flash mods

Not all of them, but ya, I actually bricked 2 psp's by stupid Sony updates., but GameStop took them back, only because I had the 1 year bought warranty for 20 Dollars, but this was back when I lived in America(good times).

If your PSP does not have the TA-082 motherboard, then yes, getting a modchip will work. However, it requires opening up your console and soldering the chip inside. I can figure it's very tough to do and the last thing you want is to have a completely ruined PSP.

If your thinking of doing the modchip then watch the psphacking101 modchip episode.

If your thinking of doing the modchip then watch the psphacking101 modchip episode.

Episode 18 to be exact ;)

It really does help. (Also scares the shit out of you to see them mess up 2 psps') Its really nice to see the trial and error and learn from their mistakes.

You can find it on google video if your planning on installing a modchip. :D

This is something that hasent been mentioned to my knowledge but had anyone thought about possable upbricking via the RS232 serial port (the remote port) unfortunatly I have little to no programming knowledge / experence but i was thinking something along the lines of sending data via telnet so something along those lines... Any ideas anyone?

if bricking is caused by updating/downgrading the flash on its mobo. Why dont ppl try and find a way to make the psp run its OS from a memory stick? I mean i run linux from my 2 gig stick on my pc. It would probably be alot slower depending on the latency between the mobo and psp. Then again if the flash is tied with the bios of the psp or something theres no way that would work out, but just a thought.

Tomppa
November 16th, 2006, 12:11
If you've tried DevHook, you are likely to know what it's like to run the os from memstick. Not much different, I'd say.

mnuhaily22
November 16th, 2006, 12:29
Well you are right, it is quite a bit slower, I actually tried my friends 1.5 PSP, and it was fast, then I devhook 1.5 from mine, and wow, it was so much slower, I couldn't beleive it, and when he devhooks 2.71, the web browser takes ages to freakin load.

Leson here is dont buy officail sony memory sticks.
There slower and more Expensive

Oh and if you happened to have broken your psp screen etc I can repair it for you!
I have experience etc! and i can fix anything other than a brick or a new mobo!

I wouldn't say more expensive all the time. I picked one up for $115USD not too long ago. They are definately slow, but it's no big deal really unless you are watching a huge video file or playing quake online (which is a pain when the ms is being read in the middle of a huge fight and you stop moving and just die.

If you have any bricks, TA-82's or others, I'm looking for one at the moment. I'm going to frankenstein a TA-82 brick shortly with this crazy idea I have. If it doesn't work, who cares, I still have a few 1.5 compatible mobos around, just a quick (not literally) swap and look, PSP works again. PM me to sell good condition bricks.

MikeDX, any luck yet?

How much would a kit cost?

If its cheap it would be kool for us users to set up a fund to buy devs dev stations
