Hi! I recently got a dreamcast (With Windows CE symbol on the front) and im new to the homebrew scene.

The problem is, i can't find any info on Windows CE for dreamcast at all. I really want a Dreamcast enabled version of CE, but do i need a Keyboard? if not where can i find a copy?

Well unfortunetly getting a keyboard wont get you Windows CE working on your DC and Windows CE cannot be downloaded but if purchased big amounts of money i believe for the DC version as it was only being used to produce and make games

no. there is no such thing as Windows CE for the dreamcast at all. There is a development kit that allows you to create programs for the Dreamcast using Windows CE style-libraries. Basically programs that would run on Windows CE.

Hi & welcome to the scene :)

There's a linux port to DC - I haven't tested it until now but you can download it at www.DCHomebrew.org

So when it says its "compatable with windows CE" its not compatable at all (just the dev kit)? Is that written on all the DCs? It's very misleading.

PS: Ive tried the Linux port and it runs alright. (At least the start, no keyboard = A,B,X,Y only lol)

yes every dc has it written on it.

It's not misleading. Games with the "Powered by Windows CE" logo on them (Sega Rally, and a few others) run on Windows CE. Windows CE is included on the GD-ROMs. There's no GUI like the PocketPC version of WinCE, just DirectX and a few other core parts of Windows.

Now im starting to understand. :)

Where can i get the windowsCE folder?

You'd need to rip it off a GD-ROM, which can't be discussed here. It's not available freely, and it's useless by itself anyway. There was one emulator that used it (sintendo), but that's about it.

Edit: Now that I think about it, there was also a WinCE-based mp3 player. I can't remember what it was called. DreamAMP, maybe? You can't legally redistribute the Windows CE runtime, so there's really not a lot you can do with it. Best to steer clear of it and use KOS.

Edit #2: It's DC MP3 by Strat76, not DreamAMP, that runs on WinCE.

There were also Bigboy's emulators, DC64 and DreamSpec.

And Titanium Studios' leaked Quake port (which apparantly was given an official unofficial blessing to DCEmulation by idSoftware).

Most of what you need to know about Windows CE Dreamcast Kit and the DIrectX libraries available for it it's on this thread http://www.dcemu.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Dev;action=display;num=1085069574

i thought that all of the games used windows ce along with direct x to render the games. i thought that's one of the reasons dc died cause xbox uses direct x as well so transfering dc games to xbox would be a cinch.

both of those points are completely wrong. I think there were at most 2 or 3 REAL (and when I say real I mean non-slideshow) games that used WinCE instead of katana, and they were fairly poor. For reference, it uses a stripped down version of DX 5, so it can't even really do much. In fact, KOS (even KOS 1.0) is probably more capable than WinCE for the DC.

I really don't know why they put the windows logo on the DC to begin with, but I always did find it interesting how at some point they changed it between "Compatible with WindowsCE" and "Designed for WindowsCE"

In fact, KOS (even KOS 1.0) is probably more capable than WinCE for the DC

So you think KOS can support games like Half-Life DC (for example) ?
Because Half-Life is full-3D, and with KOS i never see a game like that (may be i must search again).

Yea, KOS has great support for 3D stuff, we just don't have coder's proficient in 3D game design.

I remeber this from when DC was "alive" Alot of people thought they could run CE on thier machines, this is not true. You could run Linux on the DC. I imagine the CE was only there to give the developers something to work with.

I wonder why theres still "Illigal, cant show you how to do this" for the Dreamcast when Sega has compeletly abandon their system. If anything I bet their glad we still find ways to keep them runnng lol.
