Does anyone know if this really works? I read that the firmware will allow a cd rom to read gd roms.

In before lock. The only real reason for something like that would be to rip games. Though despite it being legal, this will still get locked.

I have heard things about CD-ROM drive firmware hacks, but nothing has turned up, and is assumed to have been vaporware.

well it could be used to run original games on a dreamcast emu, i think someone is/was working on it, but i think a cd rom drive's laser is too weak, it was a dvd drive....

just for that, i'm not going to lock it ;)

I recently got a dreamcast and it is a bit annoying not being able to play the games that I buy on the PC, but I wouldn't bother messing with DVD drive firmware for it. but it is an interesting concept.

There's one out there, but the firmware is for a rare Yamaha drive.
