Component Cable question

Hi I just now got a component cable (not the original nintendo one) the weird thing is, once I switch on the old virtual console games (not mario 64 that one works) I get a black screen until I hit the home button.
I am not sure what is at fault here my tv or the virtual console. Does anyone have the component cable and VC running?
