You don't need any room on your MS to put the PS1 Emulator, it is built in to the firmware. I'll try t o help you.

Go to your system settings on your PSP and tell me the firmware version.

Then there's absolutely nothing you can do. No homebrew no popstation, nothing.
My advice to you is don't update again and wait patiently for a downgrader or eLoader.

There is the option to buy a PS3, wait for Sony to put the PSone games you want onto the online store, download said games having had to pay for them (again) and play them on the PSP.

Expensive, but can still be done.

Or, sell your PSP, buy an old PSP with the custom firmware already installed and play all the PSone games you own on the PSP, once you've converted them for free.

yes, you are in luck, there is a way to downgrade your 2.80, check to see if it has a TA-082 motherboard first, and read as much as you can about doing it before you attempt it.
PS, put your PSP on charge as soon as youcan, you will require at least 75% full battery.

what if it doesnt have TA-082 on the mother board?

It won't say TA-082 on the the motherboard it will have writing on the righthand side of the motherboard looking into the UMD slot

Then its fine and its not a TA-082, but you will have to use the NON TA-082 2.80 downgrader

There is a more reliable one out so I would go and look for that as the one I provided is too unstable
You will need xloader i'm not sure if this includes that
