hello, i am completely new to psp, but i had a browse around in the forum.

Where should i get my psp???
1) from local shops (hmv, Games, Gamestation>>) and find one with 2.71 ? but i heard there's risks of downgrading it to 1.5 and i dunno if i can do it

2) from ebay and get a 1.5 one??? i was wondering since i heard 1.5 are not made any more, how can those sellers claim their 1.5 psp are original and brand new?? However they are already 1.5 don;t have to downgrade it myself. But i heard those ones they are selling are made 1.5 by modifying the modchip or sth

3) get an used one from stores and ask for one with <2.71 fw??

Also, do i have to purchase an original umd as well to run homebrew? since i heard i may need it to access some programs?? (i am not sure )

thx guys.

or you could try out preowned ones in game and gamestation and ask to try it out, taking a look at the firmware en route.

if u get used ones from gamestop or ebgames, the employees have to upgrade it due to homebrew issues.

go to your local store and look for the letter code on the side of the box: http://forums.qj.net/f-guides-general-psp-42/t-determining-psp-firmware-using-box-codes-july-27-2006-28718.html

I found many used 2.71s at Gamestop, as well as a 2.8 and 2.5. I only checked at two stores so there could be way more out there as well.

ohhhh never EVER EVER buy preowned ones because most of the time they were updated by someone then traded in!!

You can check the box for codes (check out this link (http://forums.qj.net/f-psp-firmware-discussion-253/t-determining-psp-firmware-using-box-codes-jan-3-2007-28717.html))

At the local Best Buy, they have 2.71's (K)...

If you have a costco, I'd for sure get one from there. I recently bought a PSP from there, when I checked, it was 2.60 (but now it's 3.03 OE-B :D ). For a memory stick, I'd get a Sony one, because you know it's going to work. Make sure it has MagicGate though.

Ebgames/Gamestop employees do not update firmware of preowned psp's. That is a myth. I just bought a used psp right after Christmas and I asked the employees about that "policy". They didn't even know what the most recent firmware was. Got myself a used psp in launch packaging (spiderman 2 sticker) with 2.60 firmware. Of course, that became 3.02OE-B before the night was over.

My advice: Go the used psp route. Most stores don't care about you handling the used merchandise anyway.
