officially, as i ordered it Easter sat (afternoon HK time i later found out) and as it was dispatched via airmail on the 30TH/31ST (according to an e-mail) i should recieve it between 6 and 14TH. But order status didn't change untill Sat 2ND (well thats when i noticed it changed), So by that it could be between 9TH and 16TH

btw, selected Airmail as i saw in a thread on this site that it would avoid import duty.

Been reading posts for a couple of weeks now and have my PSP in hand. speaking from experience Vimes you won't have to pay Duty as it is not a duty chargeable item, you will have to pay VAT though. I got my PSP from US on Ebay, probably paid a little more than most but worth it (£243 inc SP2 game and all the charges). The guy i bought it from marked the value down and wrote Video games on the customs note, the thing that hurt though was the monkeys at parcelforce charging £13.50 to chuck it through customs with a thousand other packages. I bid mine on Good Friday (appropriate) and it arrived on 4th :D :D :D , not bad going really.

Kpow - sorry to say that it is a duty chargeable item! Anything over £18 is subject to duty.

Kpow
April 6th, 2005, 09:14
Leggy, anything over £18 is subject to "VAT". Duty is another charge and if you check the Customs and Excise website PDF on duty items it is zero. My handling record from Parcel Force who have to process for cutsoms has £0 duty listed. Maybe it was the way it was marked up as Video Games rather than console?!?!

http://www.dhl.co.uk/info/duty.html

As Internet shopping becomes more popular, what is often not understood is that as soon as you hit the return key to purchase a product from another country, then effectively you become an importer and become liable for Duty and VAT payments.
It's not always about the purchasing!
If someone sends you a gift from abroad that is over £36 in value, you will also be obliged to pay the Duty and VAT unless the person who sent it has agreed to pay it themselves.

What is the rate of Duty?
The rate of Duty for any given product should be the same no matter into which EU country they are imported, but may differ depending upon the country of origin. Set annually by the EU, rates run from 1st January to 31st December and are published in a Customs Tariff issued by each EU country. Duty is usually percentage based, and averages between 5-9% with extremes of nil and 85%.
How is the rate determined?
Goods are classified using the Customs Tariff in order to arrive at the rate of Duty. The EU uses a ten digit coding and there are approximately 14,000 classifications.
What is the value for Duty?
Customs assess the amount of Duty to be paid based on the declared value of the goods plus the transport costs to the country of destination.

so, buying a game would cost you import duty? because its over £18? i thought it depended on the weight of the thing you have purchased? because i am ordering a game on Saturday and i plan on spending £30 (cos thats all i got) and if i am going to be charged for import duty; a) how much will it be and b) how do u pay for it?

Kpow

I have been charged VAT and duty for goods bought over the Internet, why is this?
Any goods purchased from outside the EC are liable for duty and in some cases VAT. If you have been sent a gift and the value is under £36 you will not be liable, over that amount you will be charged depending on the product. For purchases bought by yourself with a value over £18 you may have to pay duty depending on the product; it may also be liable to VAT. Under that amount you will not be liable.

According to C&E the if the console plugs in to a TV then it is duty required, if handheld then duty free code 9504909000, games of an optical media nature are subject to Duty, of technically PSP but if the games are one off and can't be recorded and the fact they are in a "Cartridge" then duty free again. These items are VAT chargable. Call HMCE on 0845 010 9000 and go through to the toys section.

It is a very complicated area, that's why HM gets so much money ;)

Open to interptitation, Fact is i didn't pay any Duty but only paid £22 VAT as items marked down.

a) how much will it be and b) how do u pay for it?

A) VAT at 17.5% B) the carrier will pay the charge on you behalf and possibly charge you for doing it, then you pay them.

ParcelForce don't like their driver to carry large amounts of money (Union set) so when they receive they send you a letter saying that they are holding an item that has charges, you go down there, cough up and get your goods.

The game if cartridge based ie. you can't record on to it then no Duty is paid, check with the HMCE on the number i gave in previous post and go to toys section.

p.s. Leggy, don't rely on DHL telling you general information go straight to HMCE. All these couriers are trying to get you for what they can, £13.50 handling from PF what a con.

Kpow - see my link from the other thread on customs duty.

DHL charge duty on behalf of the Customs and Excise and it is payable on most goods imported from outside the EU.

3.2 Do I have to pay duty or VAT on goods sent to me from outside the EC?

Most goods arriving in the UK from outside the EC are liable to any or all of these charges:

* Customs Duty;
* Excise Duty; and
* VAT.

These must be paid whether:

* you purchase the goods or receive them as a gift;
* the goods are new or used; or
* the goods are for your private use or for sale.

OK leggy, i see it say "most goods" not all goods. Two questions, have you spoken to HMCE or just looked up details on their web site? if so what was the 10 digit code they gave you? mine was 9504909000

I spoke to HMCE this morning and asked all the pertinent questions about handhelds, consoles and games. The answer i got back i have already posted along with the 10 digit ref code for PSP (handheld console).

If you say duty has to be paid i'd better phone HMCE and put them right ;)

Here's another reason to call them and ask, example of import duty from outside EU

MP3 Player/recorder (Sound Only) 2% duty
MP3 Player/recorder (incorporating a radio) 10%

Palm held portable Free
Palm held portable with calculator 3.7%

HMCE is barmy and it no good using generalisation such as "Most Goods" because you just need to look at the above items to realise it's all barmy. Why do you have to pay 8% more for MP3 with a radio?!?!?!?!?

Go figure that out

Link to PDF file, save and then open. http://www.hmce.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageImport_ShowContent&id=HMCE_PROD_009989&propertyType=document

So a PSP is duty free put games aint?

Kpow
April 6th, 2005, 18:36
It is 0% duty on handheld consoles, if you have been charged duty by a courier then get the receipt from them copy to HMCE for a refund. ParcelForce did not charge me any duty. Again, you will more than likely get hit with the VAT and any charges the handler adds.

BTW you didn't answer my questions ;)

April 6th, 2005, 18:36
btw, keep the jokes about my suffering waiting for my PSP comming, i'm a big boy and can take it. oh and huck_fin love the joke cheered me up no end, maybe i will watch out the window for the fethered little bugger, he must have stopped off for some pigeon food!!!!

Well Vimes games is a funny thing, when i asked the guy he said that duty was due on optical media unless it was a cartridge such as Gameboy etc. when i explained that the optical media was in a cartridge he said "is it a one off ie. you can't record on to it?" i said that it was a cart that can't have anything written on to it he said that it would be Duty Free, just VAT.

It's a tricky thing, don't rely on someone else telling you, just call the number i posted and go through to Toys section and ask, it's quite quick and i didn't wait long to get through.

If you want the right answer get it from the horses mouth :)

sounds like my ipod, came from america marked as $12 speaker phone, to avoid import costs. Many things that come through ebay are marked in such ways to avoid the cost. However major companies tend not to lie on their parcels. I dont see why they dont actually charge like £10 for the item then a further £200 or whatever for postage, and then include a reciept for the item, sayin it cost £10. Or is postage subject to vat also?

I wonder if they post it to jersey, then from jersey to mainland would you get around it that way. (not as random as it seems, play.com are based in jersey and we dont have to pay vat or import costs from there)

You shouldnt need to, you're courier should do the clearing for you, if its Royal Mail delivering then it could take as long as a week to get it to your door.

How long has it been now? ... generally my items from Japan or Korea take about a fortnight to arrive (if I dont choose expidited delivery), similar times for Australia.

Hopefully you wont have to wait much longer.

ordered it easter sat queried whether payment had gone through and recieved confirmation on the 30TH. Reply stated that order had been 'shipped' although the order status remained as 'recieved and to be processing' until the 2nd when it changed to shipped (well i noticed on 2ND i didn't look on the 1ST).
Airmail is quoted as taking 7-14 days.
knowing what i know now i would have selected a courrier.:(
