View Full Version : Is there a snes emulator, that can run Chrono Trigger Smooth?!?

I have been searching the net for months and I can't find a fast enough emulator for my psp. Right now I use snes9xTYL as I find it to be the fastest. However, Chrono Trigger (one of the best games of all time) work, there is too much lag and if I put and type of frame skip it gets to choppy. So aoverall is there a faster emulator. Please for the love of god, ice-cream and all that good stuff, please say there is!

EDIT: Holy moley! I have been away from the hacking scene for a few weeks and now I hear there is a ps1 full speed emulator? Can someone point me to the direction of that as well. (A topic on it will do)

If you want the ps1 emulator then you need 3.03 oe-b firmware.
any way if you want the snes emulator this is the most current one. you may need to tweak with the frames per seconds and stuff like that to make it run for your standards.

and for that ps1 emulator you were talking about here is a link for 3.03 oe-a just upgrade from the second link after that to get to 3.03 oe-b.

I tried changing, the frameskip and stuff but it is too choppy is there no solution? A

PS1 related: If I upgrade will I still be able to play my SNES games on my PSP? Also where do I download the ps1 games? Also can someone guide me through what I need to do, step by step, I don't want to ruin my PSP. Also I have 1.5 firmware right now.

psst... downloading them is not allowed spoken about on these forms just to let you know. in order to get them you have to rip them from your OWN ps1 cd's.
once you have the cd's image (Iso,bin, or img) then get a program called popstation and convert it it should come as 2 files and eboot and a keys.bin just copy these into a folder in the "GAME" folder under the "PSP" folder.
http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/994

and no you will not lose any of the capablities of 1.5 like homebrew.

did you try moving the cpu speed higher in the snes emulator that really helps but it uses more power.

here is a guide this should walk you through it pretty safe to install as long as you have 75% or more battery.

SOrry I didn't know it was bad to talk about downloading, anyway do i need additional gear to take the games off my ps1 games? Also I did increase the CPU speed with no luck.

Where did you notice the slowdown?I just ran the game and although I didn't notice any graphical slowdown, the music was lagging pretty badly.I set my frameskip to 1 rather than 0 and that seems to have fixed the problem.Keep in mind that this is a brand new file, and I've no intention of playing through CT at the moment, so.. XD

BTW, I'm running Snes 9x Tyl 0.4.2 non-ME version on a 3.03 OE-B PSP at 333 mhz clockspeed..gonna try the ME version soon, as I hear it can be faster on some things.

Finally, when you loaded the rom, did it say in the beginning 'Applying speedhacks'? It did for me, so..

ME is the release that fixed those games i believe, plus it has kernal access so i think i makes it run smoother

Strange. CT runs pretty well for me. As sir Pibster suggested, perhaps you need the latest TYL ME release.

Believe it or not, the sound portion of the emulator takes up a noticeable bit of resources. In the ME edition of the TYL release, it takes some of the load off of the main CPU by handling the sound elsewhere , thus giving you a noticeable boost. Even when the tunes are going at higher quality. As Chrono Trigger has some of the best music found on any game in the SNES library you certainly will want to hear it at its best :).

Yea, I just ran ME as opposed to normal, and my performance went from 50 FPS max to 52-60 FPS, mostly ranging in the higher 50s. The music also sounded more on-par to the original/PC emulated versions...Get ME when you can ^^

Thanks can you radical doods answer my question about PS1 game ripping?

I'll repost so you don't have to go back and look, how do I rip games from ps1 cds?

There are several programs to do this, Alcohol 120%, UltraISO, CloneCD.
You use one of this programs to rip your ISO(or img or bin) and use a POPStation program to convert it to a PBP file. There are plenty of these available.
Good luck.

does that me edition run better than 0.42?

Bytrix
January 17th, 2007, 17:02
They are both 0.42 and contain the exact same code. The only difference is that the sound/music code is executed on the ME (second processor) in the PSP. This frees up some extra CPU cycles on the main CPU for everything else.. so yes it runs faster.

It would make no difference however on simpler games or games which don't use alot of audio channels/background music.

In general there is really no reason for not using the ME edition.

ok, gonna try that out =) perhaps now mario rpg will finally run full speed :)
EDIT: boooyaaa!! it really is faaar better! great!

When you ran ME, was it on a 2.71 system with HEN or whatever as opposed to a 1.5 firmware? The ME is only available through the 1.50 kernel or some such, from what I hear, which is probably why you didn't hear any music. Try it again, coz I'm hearing music just fine on ME with my setup

Wow, PSX games are sick lol! ANyway, when i compress with PopStation (like the numbers 1-9 on the compression list) do I lose quality, because it cuts the file size drastically but... Well if you know the answer please reply. Also thanks to everyone who helped so far!

I don't see this mentioned often which is odd, but does anyone else get random crashes using this emu? .42 me version, sometimes I can play for awhile but it annoys the hell out of me when i see that "regret to inform you... shit happens" screen of death.

I don't get crashes but my emulated sound output is low, so low that i might as well just turn off the volume, yet on other releases it was louder also the no sleep mode is also a drag. Btw how does the whole ad-hoc work anyways? it doesn't have a guide on the readme. im running ME under 3.03oe-a could that be the problem?

no there isn't any quality reduction the only side effects of compressing is that i have noticed longer loading times but it is worth it.

Thanks Gecko. I'll reduce filesizes then :P

Okay, on to the next thing how do I do the pictures so that all my games don't have the same picture on the menu. So how do I do that lol, I read some stuff but I'm stumped!

Does your reply have to do with the topic? Please don't reply if you don't have anything useful to say, also anybody who is mature and READS would have noticed why the topic and contents are different.

PS
I'm not being mean just... Truthful

I have another question. Is there a reason legends of legaia freezes whenever I use items? Do I need to enable something or does Legaia just not work?
