Whilst analysts continue to slate Microsoft's latest operating system, the firm has celebrated its sales and compared them to the success of its predecessor Windows 7.
Tami Reller, newly appointed head of Microsoft's Windows group, addressed the crowd at the J.P. Morgan Tech Forum at CES, highlighting the operating system's 60 million sold licenses.
Microsoft later confirmed the sales within an official blog post (http://blogs.windows.com/windows/b/bloggingwindows/archive/2013/01/08/windows-8-60-million-licenses-sold.aspx).
Within the post, the firm indicates a "similar sales trajectory" to those of Windows 7, which launched back in 2009. However, the predecessor lacked the scrutiny and criticism received by Microsoft's latest OS.
Microsoft also confirms that its OEM partners have now certified over 1,700 systems to run both Windows 8 and its RT edition, whilst more than 100 million app have been downloaded to date via the OS' Windows Store.
Whilst the numbers are impressive, the announcement would suggest that sales of the OS have slowed significantly, given that Microsoft claimed back in November that it had sold 40 million licenses.
