Playing burned NTSC and NTSC/J games on a PAL Dreamcast

Hey there I'm a noob here and have a noobish question.

I live in the UK and I just bought a PAL Dreamcast. What I was wondering was whether I would need an import disc like DC-X to play burned CD-R games from different regions on my PAL Dreamcast or could I just put the disc in and it should work?

I couldnt find any answers to this sort of question here, so I would really appreciate any help. Thank you!
