View Full Version : Newbie Question - which Firmware?

Just picked up a PSP and am wanting to do just a few things on it:

1. Run emus for the 2600, Colecovision, NES and GBA.
2. Play a few of the PSP games - Vice City series, some baseball ones, etc.
3. Still have Wi-Fi capabilities

So, which firmware will allow me to do all three? I've seen that some of the newer official release PSP games will automatically upgrade the firmware for you (how nice) when you run them. Don't want that since, from what I've gathered so far here, you can't run emus on "newer" versions of firmware.

TIA!

Custom firmware is what you want, the latest one right now is 3.40 OE. What is your current version at the moment?

Thank you, I'll have to look into the custom ones then. :) I don't have it with me right now - I'll post which version it has once I can. Thanx.

One other thing...you know that Network Update icon? NEVER use it. Or any Sony updates. Their updates are full of shitty security patches. Custom firmwares override them.

Thanx. Yeah, had an XBox that was screwed by one of the DASH UPDATE files before - had forgotten to replace that file on the HD for that particular game rip with a bogus one. Never use an official update! :o

You can't downgrade from $ony's official 3.40?

No, it is not possible to downgrade from firmware version 3.40 at this time.

no, the just require u to install b4 u can play. CF overides this. sony cannot force a firmwre on u, it asks first.

Yeah there is something to do with some legal agreements on the PSP that means they can just put the upgrade on you.

Because if it bricks you could sue.

PS3 force it one you more. It wont let you do anything untill you update

You go into Settings, then System Settings, then System Information.

Indeed you would.

3.4

If an exploit is found, there likely will be homebrew/downgrader. However, there is no exploit currently.

can't just install a custom firmware?

Nope, as you need a homebrew capable firmware to install custom firmware.

hope someone hacks 3.4 at some point. what's the last official firmware that has been hacked for downgrade?

3.03 I'm afraid. Noone knows when a 3.10-3.40 downgrader is going to come out.
