Final Fantasy 7 crashes near the end of disk 2. Has anyone got further on the PSP?

Seems to crash on all versions up to 3.40 - in the Forgotten City after the key is put in the music box. Step into the waterfall and it slows and eventually crashes - at differing speeds depending on firmware.

I just spent 60+ hrs on it, so I'm keen to know if its solvable. It has run pretty well up to that point.

I've beaten the game, no problem.

I have firmware 3.40 oe-a and for some reason when I fight some enemies tat use skills or abilities like death sentence, the screen scrambles and I cant go any further in the game...i tried using various eboots of FF7 but it has the same problem...does anyone know wat might be the problem or is it maybe this firmware is not stable with the game?

I get the same issue with crashing, infact, in Shinra tower, when I'm fighting that elevator boss, I beat the first part, and the second part causes the screen to scramble up.
