Help New to Wii Homebrew

As it says on the title I am new to the wii homebrew scene coming from PSP hombrew and I didn't update my wii thinking its not good for using homebrew.

TO sum it it up how do I check the firmware of my Wii if necessary and if it's safe to update.

Also my wii is not moded and I need a good site or some one in oahu that can mod wiis.

First of all, homebrew is not available for Wii as of now.
It's okay to update, it's nothing like the PSP Scene.
The only homebrew you can run now is GC homebrew (http://www.wiili.org/index.php/GameCube_Homebrew) using a mod-chip or the SDLoad method.

well the title says wii homebrew and your post says wii homebrew in it, so i guess thats why people think you mean wii homebrew.
