Microsoft has temporarily removed its Windows RT 8.1 upgrade from the Windows Store after a number of reports that it was bricking Surface tablets.
In a post on Microsoft’s Answers site (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/surfwinrt-surfupdate/why-isnt-the-windows-rt-81-upgrade-available-in/ec3b52bd-8072-4b9a-8de1-64c2e4c05551), a forum moderator explained: “Microsoft is investigating a situation affecting a limited number of users updating their Windows RT devices to Windows RT 8.1. As a result, we have temporarily removed the Windows RT 8.1 update from the Windows Store.
“We are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and apologise for any inconvenience. We will provide updates as they become available.”
At the time of writing Microsoft has not provided a fix, so for those who have already downloaded the upgrade and now have an unusable device, Kick That Computer has posted instructions to rescue any Surface RT tablet that’s been killed by the update.
The rescue involves creating a bootable USB recovery drive, booting the device from the recovery drive, and entering the startup repair menus.
