View Full Version : DSOrganize Source ripped off by Mediacart

TheYak pmed me this news earlier.

A new slot-2 cart, the Mediacart (http://www.mediacart.cc/products.htm) uses DSOrganize's code (as well, potentially, as a couple other homebrew apps) without giving credit to the author, without compensation, and without receiving permission.

Dragonminded has a blog entry about it here: http://dragonminded.blogspot.com/

gbadev.org's DSO sticky has been following the development in this thread: http://forum.gbadev.org/viewtopic.php?t=12743&start=270

I thought about modifying my signature thread or something along those lines, but it would only be seen (if even noticed) by a handful of people. When a hardworking developer gets raped, it's time the the homebrew community as a whole publicizes it and boycotts the manufacturer.

Thoughts ?

They need to understand the homebrew community != the warez community. An apology should be given, and the current profit should be divided up and given to the people who these bastards ripped off.

Sadly, that wont happen, so i just say we boycott any sites who advertise this crap.

By the way, my favorite part is their website: http://www.mediacart.cc/products.htm, same config file on the EBOOKS section.

I'm pretty pissed about it, I hate it when the hard work of people who make stuff for free and for the love of it are taken advantage of. Not only would the owners of this device think DSO and Moonshell (and many others) are pointless because they "have something better", but the developers of the stolen work would be discouraged from continuing work because someone else is taking credit and making money from their blood, sweat, and tears. In turn, the loyal users of the original programs are hurt by the lack of development because the developer lost the heart to continue.

I'm encouraging the boycott of the Media Cart and the company and if at all possible, legal action to put them out of business or at least stop further sales of the product.

Grrrrr. I'll do my best to spread the word and keep people from buying the MediaCart.

Someone should get this on YouTube and Digg. Point out the truth to the masses so the entire homebrew community and especially potential entrants into the community would know not to buy it.

From what I read over at gbadev, because DSO uses a GPL license all this company has to do is to release the modifications they've made to the sourcecode.

But yes it does stink that they didn't ask permission first.

if they want to use this code, since it is being sold as the core operating system, DragonMinded should either be given a percentage of accrued profit or given a the proper monentary amount. This product looks neat, but i sure as hell will not touch it unless something happens to settle this problem.

if anything, we can steal one and then rip it's OS to post on the net for download. ;D

I hate to say it, but the very hardware we're using for our beloved homebrew, or other techniques (WMB included) are in violation of US law. Assuming Nintendo cares.

I think it's fairly terrible that they've just gone and lifted this stuff without so much as a thank-you, but at the same time, we're kinda doing the same thing to Nintendo just by doing all this.

I kinda hope they make amends and we can forget about the whole ordeal. From what I've seen the thing is a pointless waste of money by comparison with just about any other product anyway. Nobody who knows what DSOrganize is would buy it.

PS. DSOrganize is the proverbial excrement. Much thanks to DM for this one. It's _essential_.

Subject: Internal Source code used in MediaCart

To the director/project manager/head honcho(s) at MediaCart:

Good evening. My name is Jake Turner, known as Mr. Biggs on the Dcemu forums (http://dcemu.co.uk)

It has been brought to my attention that your product, the Mediacart, uses source code implemented in the popular Nintendo DS homebrew program, DSOrganize. This program was created by Shaun Taylor, A.K.A DragonMinded (http://www.dragonminded.com) . He has put many hours of time into this developig this application, and has put up with a lot of the hassles that homebrew development brings, such as buggy Software Development Kits (SDKs), the lack of drivers for the individual Flashcarts(solved by the DILI patching system), and general complaints from people who had problems. This man has done the DS Homebrew scene an amazing service, and to know his work is being copied and sold in your product without any form of monentary reimbursement- pisses me and many others off, for lack of a stronger word.

Currently, a boycott is in the works, spreading throught the DCEmu community, and possibly being enacted by the administrators, thanks to this little detail. Any company would know that a mass boycott is not good for buisness, especially from a reputable news site like DCEmu. If the administrators decide to boycott the Mediacart, then you won't be seeing any reviews or advertisements on the DS branch of the website. While I am currently impressed with the device, I am disgusted to know it operates on one man's unemployed toil.

If you wish to effectively sell this product, I would suggest contacting DragonMinded through [email protected] and discuss things over with him. The source code is his intellectual property, and if you refuse to respect that and reflect it in some way, he is wholly justified to take your company to court. But if you can't take the time to work things out and pay this man for his work, then keep things simple, and delete all work you have done on this project. You CANNOT take this product to market when it's heart was sculpted by one man, who isn't in your employ.

Please take the time to ponder what has been brought to light here, and make sure proper action is taken. This doesn't have to get ugly, or need to end at all. All that is necessary is a change in course. I leave it to you to make the decision. Thank you for your time.

Just to let everyone know. This is on Digg. If you do a search for DSOrganize it should show up. So lets try and Digg this to the front page and get the word out.

Yeah guys, you gotta realise this.

However i believe they are required to release the source code and credit the original author.

You guys do realize that the bigger deal you make of this, the more people will hear about the cart in the first place. And publicity is publicity after all.

I would never have heard about this cart if it wasn't for the "media cart steals from dsorganize" threads popping up all over the place. Although I agree that using DM's code without permission or acknowledgment is not cool, you are probably doing the company more good that harm.

LOL. I have a very good idea. what we need to do is set up a gmail account. at this point we subscribe to a lot of newsletters about viagra etc. The excellent thing about gmail is that you can redirect your emails.

OR we can go to sites with newsletters/mailing lists and enter the gmail email adress into the list of 100 mailing lists. We then confirm the email adress by subscribing to the newsletters. Then we set up the redirect to the mediacart email.

NOTE: FOR SOME REASON THIS IS NOT ILLEGAL WITH GMAIL THERE IS SOME TYPE OF LOOPHOLE (IT WAS IN THE NEWS

New Updates On Situation
So I am mistaken. Apparently the GPL does not allow me to do what I am doing. As long as the MediaCart releases their source code in it's entirity, it is legal for them to use all my code and sell it. Please don't harass them until it is found out whether or not they do this.

It's a sad day when those stupid FAT CATS sitting around in their corporate offices take advantage of a good person that is trying to make things better for the homebrew scene. I bet that they have been waiting until DM improved it just to rip him off. I say that if there is a way to sue them or stop their production, it SHOULD be done!!!!!! I am really pissed about this. I definetly wouldn't want it to happen to me.

P.S. If anyone would like to post their comments onto the other sites in a different language, than all they have to do is copy it and paste it in the text box that shows up on http://www.freetranslation.com/ and then choose from what language to what language they are translating it. I'm sure you can figure out the rest.

No longer "stealing." See the main site, as they're actually going to work with DragonMinded to resolve the conflict, so the boycotts can stop.
