OK so I thought I would start a thread for DOOM WADS now that PSP DOOM is almost perfect. To use WADS with the current version (0.04) you need to name the WAD DOOM2.WAD

---------------------------------------------------------------

** KNOWN TO WORK (v0.04) **

DOOM.WAD - Doom 1
DOOM2.WAD - Doom 2
DOOMU.WAD - Ultimate Doom (Doom 1 with extra chapter)
TNT.WAD - Final Doom: TNT Evilution
PLUTONIA.WAD - Final Doom: Plutonia
QUAKE2.WAD - Quake mod
HERETIC.WAD - Heretic

** KNOWN NOT TO WORK (v0.04) **

HEXDD.WAD - Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel expansion wad
HEXEN.WAD - Hexen (1.1)
STRIFE1.WAD - Strife
Fistfull of Doom (1995 Western style fan WAD)

** KNOWN TO WORK v0.02 but unknown for v0.04 **

DUKE.WAD - Duke Nukem mod
Goldeneye - Based on N64 game

---------------------------------------------------------------

Here is what I have but have not tried yet -

HACX.WAD - HACX (1.1) - Requires DOOM2.WAD
HERETIC.WAD - Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders

Please post your own findings on DOOM WAD's and reviews of what we can play.

Can't find any that work on the above link myself, but some must do.

I can confirm that these definitely work -

DOOM2.WAD
PLUTONIA.WAD
TNT.WAD

i tried the Goldeneye doom thing that worked on v0.2 so i dont see why it shouldnt work on later versions ... pretty smart conversion too!

Can I ask a very newbish question? Can somebody tell me exactly how to get this game onto my 1.50 PSP?
I've tried but it didn't work and im obviously doing something wrong so has anyone got a detailed step by step guide of how to get the game onto my PSP?

Cheers guys.

There are about a million "Please help me with Doom" topics, so how about we keep this one to the WAD files?

I can confirmm the Ultimate Doom (DOOMU.WAD) works great on .04

ganon
July 15th, 2005, 19:47
is it the goldeneye from n64? If so is it full game?

Eric
July 15th, 2005, 20:15
Oh ganon thats a bad question. No its a Doom mod in dedication to the late great Goldeneye 64. I havent tested it out but when the mod was released it was from what i heard a great mod. If possible can somebody leave a pic so some of us newbies to that mod can see what it looks like.

Thanks

Eric

Yeah that would be cool, I would like to add images to the reviews on the main topic for the mod WAD's. I'm pretty excited to play all the MOD's with PSP-DOOM since I've finished DOOM 1 & 2 a few times.

I tested the QUAKE 2 mod and can confirm that it works.

It's a very good mod too, graphics are great and it really looks like Quake. Only 3 levels but worth playing because it's a lot of fun. I think it's in the public domain too, I'll try and find out and post a download if it is.

I would give it a 8 out of 10. Only looses points because of it only has 3 levels.

Can now confirm that the awesome HERETIC works. Will post a review when I get further into it.

BIG update on WADS to come on Monday or Tuesday.

I am going to try and find as many freeware/shareware WADS as possible and post them on here.

parabolee
July 18th, 2005, 16:38
Heretic is not as awesome as I thought, I think I got it confused with HEXEN. There seems to be some slight graphic glitched in shading but other than that it runs fine. Weapons and enemies are not as good as doom. Also the level designs are far inferior to Doom. I would give it a 7/10.

It's ok for a break from Doom, but your better off with the Plutonium or TNT : Evilution versions of Doom if you have already finished 1 & 2.

Ultimate Doom is great too but it is just an update of Doom 1 with an extra chapter.

Hopefully we will find some more good non-doom wads to play soon.

Also, Fallout works. It's Doom 2 with updated graphics, and they're so good it's worth playing through Doom 2 again!

If you delete doom2.wad, it will run doom.wad. If you want to try other wad files, name them doom2.wad and put them in the wads folder. Most of the ones I've tried don't work. I really want to be able to play the fistfull of doom old west mod on my PSP.

not only does the 7+ years not matter (dooms is older) but also I think the game is just some modifications of the origonal doom shareware. not really any new content in other words.

BlackxKnight
July 27th, 2005, 15:09
It is freeware or thats how it was discribed on the website i downloaded it from....By modification not new content do you meen that its not new maps just a reskin with new textures?

Chex Quest was a DooM total conversion (TC) developed by Digital Café, and released as freeware by Ralston Purina on boxes of Chex Cereal as a promotion back in 1996.http://doomlegends.com/chexquest/tucq.html

I've noticed that the Doom64.wad and the heretic.wad floating around aren't the actual games.

The heretic.wad is a whole new level set and is completely rebuilt to work using the doom engine. Because the official version of Heretic was built differently than doom (ability to fly, use items by selecting out of an inventory, different weapon types than doom, etc). The one that's been floating around that "works with the doom port on PSP" is the unofficial rebuilt version that's basically a reskinning of doom enemies, weapons, etc. If you attempt to use the official shareware or full version of Heretic with the PSP-DOOM port, it will not load up. Only the unofficial one rebuilt using doom's engine works. I've only gotten the registered version of heretic to work on the actual Heretic port that can be downloaded on the PSP emulation page.

I've also tried the Doom64.wad that's been floating around as well, and that's also a homebuilt version as the levels are completely different than the N64 game. (I could only get this to work on zdoom on my PC. This one won't work with the latest version of PSP doom.)

Sharkey
August 25th, 2005, 23:45
well i only got ultimate doom to work by naming the doom2.wad to doomu.wad.

so that works along with doom 2, named doom2.
although you guys probably knew that.

i have several other wads and mods ill try after i play these.

and yes someone did make a mod that is like the nintendo 64 version,
cant remember the name though.

@mourning star,
your best bet would be to buy doom collectors edition.
it has all of the doom wads.
duke, quake 2, and heretic can be found on this page.
http://www.psp-hacks.com/downloads.php
(if it not ok to post the address please delete, should be legal)
not sure what versions they are though, havent tried them.

Mourningstar
August 26th, 2005, 03:40
Yea, I plan to buy the Doom collectors edition.

I have the Heretic and Hexen wads, but I cant get them to work. What do they have to be named?

Sharkey
August 27th, 2005, 00:44
i dont think the hexen wad will work.
but for heretic, just rename it doom2.wad and replace it with the one in your psp folder.

Mourningstar
August 27th, 2005, 02:43

dougpr
August 27th, 2005, 10:42
Ok, but keep in mind that it is a "fake" version of Heretic. The real commercial release of heretic is SO much better than the version that's playable on the Doom emulator.

Sharkey
August 29th, 2005, 15:05
yeah too bad its not really quake 2,
i was kinda disappointed when i put it on.

hopefully someone will port the true version over like pac did with quake 1.
after so much time with heretic, doom and hexen, id like to stare at some polys for awhile, the sprites are making me mad, muhahaha.

or something like that.

btw, anyone ever try any of the wads from the top 100 link that was on the first post?

updated working list for v0.04...
doom, ultimate doom, heretic, quake2, tnt, plutonia, and duke nukem all work for me.

im not sure where to get the other wads that people have mentioned,
like the one that updates the graphics (fallout), or the lookalike doom 64 mod.

i did find a freedom wad and the goldeneye wad (2 different ones),
neither of them worked for me.
a link for the working versions would be appreciated.

edit: i found the doom64 wad and it doesnt work. dammit.
i also found some tools that merge some wads with the doom 2 wad,
not sure it theyll help.

A few notes about some WADS....

Half-Life - Amazing. Its an amazing experience to see. But it has a serious problem, it "freezes" at the end of the 4th level.

Quake 2 - Another amazing one, but has the same problem at a latter level....probably around 8 or 9.

Duke Nukem - Identicalt to the original Duke Nukem 3d, but its only one level.

ive read through this thread and tested a few wads and this is what i have found:
Some wads need to be merged with the original doom2.wad while others don't. I've found an awesome freeware utility called WinTex that allows you to merge, modify and create wad files for doom and its suprisingly simple to use (You don't have to be an expert programmer or anything).

Link: http://zephyr.doomrepublic.com/files/wintex50.zip

Working Wads without merging-

half life
quake2
duke3d
heretic

Working wads merged with WinTex-

doomz - dragonball z mod
zombies - 'dawn of the dead' mod

Note: All merged wads must be named "doom2.wad" or "doom.wad" (depends on which version the wad is for) so they will work with the psp.

I've also merged a version of goldeneye and doom2 but i've only got a 32Mb memory stick and the merged wad file is 35Mb 'dammit!' so i will have to get a larger memory stick. There is an option to 'shrink' a wad file by removing unnecesary code but i haven't tried it with this wad yet. I tried doing this to a merged wad with final fantasy 3 wad and doom2 but it didn't run on my psp but i think the ff3 wad was corrupt anyway.

I will keep testing merged wads and hopefully have a comprehensive list done in a couple of days...

ap0calypse

so thats me for tonight...

so did you get the goldeneye one working?

I managed to merge the goldeneye level wad with the doom2 wad and that works but im having trouble merging the graphics/sound wad. There seems to be some errors in the code for the graphics/sound wad version that im working with and im also having trouble downloading a different version (ftp server isnt recognising the download file name so its either been deleted or wrong name).

I shouldn't need a better memory stick though i could 'shrink' the wad that i end up with and save alot of space :P

I will keep trying...

I have put together a tutorial on using WinTex for anyone who wants to learn how to merge wad files and use the modded Doom wad file on their PSP. See the attached file...

Download WinTex 5.0: http://zephyr.doomrepublic.com/files/wintex50.zip

Also I have compiled a list of wads that I have tested and work on my PSP

My PSP Specs
-firmware version 1.5
-32Mb pro duo memory stick (the one you get with the value pack)
-PSPDOOM version 0.04u1

These wads I have tested don't need to be merged with the doom2.wad but need to be named doom2.wad and put in your \PSP\GAME\DOOM-PSP\WADS directory.

Working Wads without merging:

-Duke3d, only one level of duke madness 8/10

-Half Life, looks nice but doesn't truly represent half life's greatness 8/10

-Quake2, good wad with sound but the PSP-QUAKE port is better 7/10

-Heretic, excellent quality wad this one really suprised me 8/10

These next wads I have merged with doom2.wad. If your not sure on how this is done read my tutorial I have attached to this post.

Working merged wads:

-Doom64, Classic Doom style WOW! 10/10

-Fistfull of Doom, western mod absolutly brilliant, Download it Now! 10/10

-Simpsons, another excelent mod if your a fan get it now! 10/10

-Pinochestien, mix of wolfenstien and doom (In Spanish!) suprizingly good 10/10 (download came with Legacy port so you can play on your PC too)

-Fallout, updates the graphics of Doom2, excellent wad 9/10

-Otakon, crazy anime madness plays OK 8/10

-DragonBallZ, strange mod this one but if your a fan its not bad 7/10

-Sub Zero, another weird mod but it plays OK 7/10

-Star Wars, this was OK no new levels though 7/10

-Zombie, have you seen Dawn of the Dead? well this is sort of like it! dodgy graphics though 7/10

-Aliens, dodgy graphics and hard (even on easy) maps are complicated 7/10

I have also tried a few custom level wads and they worked perfectly by merging them with Doom2.wad

I am currently working on how to get GoldenEye64 mod to work with this version of Doom-PSP and I will post when I have an answer.

Where do I get Wads?
Most of the wads listed here are total conversions and can be downloaded from doom wad station:

http://www.doomwadstation.com/main/tc.html
(Check out their 'megawads' page for different level wads)

great thanks for the tutorial, i wish i had the time time to try them right now.
i got fallout working without merging it, just renamed it.

you named a few that i have wanted to try so im glad ill get to when i get the chance.
between these and the quake mods theres many many hours of free gameplay to be had.

i feel bad for the people that dont have a 1.5, poor bastards.
anyways thanx, if you get any more working let us know,
maybe you could try some of the quake ones after your done with doom. ;)

Me too, but it also works if you merge it with other wads, like the Doom64 wad.

You can merge other wads also (i.e. Duke3d + Fistful of Doom) but you may get some unnexpected results!

More working Wads

-HexenHereticDoom, its a mix of all three games and its really well done (Better than Heretic mod I posted above) 9/10

-Star Trek, not bad but the sound effects get annoying after a while. Get if your a fan 7/10

After I figure out Golden Eye I will give some of the Quake mods a try, pity theres no sound support for Quake-Psp yet (maybe the next version...)

Your Welcome...

After hours and hours of mindless editing of the GoldenEye wad I have come to the conclusion that it is not compatible with this version of Doom-Psp (I have read that it works on Doom-Psp version 2) The error I am getting is that certain sprites don't have their corresponding rotations which is completley ridiculous because they do anyway unless you want to rewrite the entire set of sprites for this wad just get the Doom-Psp version 2 and run it on that!

I just had a look at the filesize of the original Quake pak file that I have and its 33Mb, I only have a 32Mb Memory Stick dammit!! So i will have to get a better stick at some stage so I can start modding Quake-Psp. Unless anyone knows a way to reduce this filesize?

Anyway I shall continue testing more Doom wads and post them here...

Latest merged(with Doom2.wad) wads tested:

-WolfenDoom (original episodes), Excellent quality wad, a complete total conversion, if you are looking to play wolfenstein on your psp look no further than this Doom wad 10/10

-WolfenDoom (nocternal missions), Another brilliant wad 10/10

Im currently downloading Alien Vendetta wad(Ive heard its one of the best wads ever!) so i'll post my thoughts on this later...

Check out this site for the wads listed above:

Just ignore those files, you will only need the wad file to merge with other wad files. So if you download a zip file that contains many other files just take the wad files and delete the others, unless you want to run them on your PC...

WinTex only recognizes wad files...

DEH files are like patches used to update a wad file in order for it to be played on DEH supported ports.

I hope this answers your question

Im not sure what the problem was....me probably. :)

Have you made it past the 5th level? Im stuck at the end of it....thers a big room with windows that has the yellow key thats neede to open the door to the Exit, but I cant figure out how to get it....Ive already flipped all the switches and killed all the enemies.....and when I go toward the Exit theres this very loud, very irritating screeching noise.....I hope the WAD isnt messed up.....

I haven't played that far into doom64 mod yet, I only test the first two levels of each wad and then I post them here and say that there 'working'.

I have mostly been playin the wolfendoom mod, reminising about the birth of FPS games...

Anyway i'll play through doom64(ive saved at the start of the 3rd level) and see if my copy does it too.

Yeah im getting the same problem. I think it may be a monster sprite is not being displayed on the screen (which is why you hear that sound) and you need to kill it in order for the barred doors to open.
It appears that the "may ignore ***" warning message is important after all. I will merge the wad files again and see what element is being ignored and try and fix it...

Ill post a solution later...

@apocalypse, yup you did a great job,
cant wait to se what you get working for quake.

check my thread a few topics down from this one,
ive started work on a few and got them working,
i just dont have time to test many others.

im mostly curious about getting qrack, fuh quake or one of the graphical enhancement mods to work.
i havent been able to so far because they have to be started by their own exe, not quakes exe.

other mods ive tried have worked pretty good though so theres fun to be had,
your right qabout the sound though i hardly notice.

btw, a 256 memory stick should be plenty of space and arent really that expensive if you shop around.
you could probably get one at best buy for less than the price of a psp game.
i hope this doesnt stop you from working on the quake mods. :(

off topic: can someone tell me how to get my avatar working, when i go to avatar options all i see is the default ones and no place to put an address or upload my own, thanx.

Upload from your PC:
Go to control Panel, under Avatar then click Browse button "Upload an Avatar From Your Computer" find the pic you want (Remember:The maximum size of your custom image is 100 by 100 pixels or 19.5 KB, whichever is smaller) upload the pic and then its done.

As soon as I get a new memory stick, i will start working with quake mods. Probably end of next week (Im on holiday for 2 weeks hooray!) I have a couple of assignments due after the holiday but they shouldn't take to much of my time. So plenty of time to get the ignore message for Doom64 figured out and a few quake mods...

i really need help with merging the WAD files together!!
Yeah, Aliens mod was a bit challenging to get working. You need to merge the wad files you get with the download first. So, you choose one wad (e.g. Level.wad) then using WinTex "join PWADS" merge each other wad into that wad(e.g. Level.wad) until you end up with a single PWAD that contains all. Then join that wad with the Doom2.wad

Im not sure why your getting a text file as output but hopefully by reading this you'll figure it out.

BTW: In my opinion the graphics on this wad were a bit dodgy and the levels I played through were pretty confusing...(You should try Alien Vendetta, apparently one of the best wads ever!)

Im having big problems doing the alien wads

i have downloaded the DOOM2 version.

files i have are:
atc2sf.wad
atc2snd.wad
atc2tex.wad
atc2wad.wad

but when i join these PWADS i get this message:
ERROR: The command line of DeuSF is too big for DOS (try using shorter paths)

What am i doing wrong???

Is there another (more successful) program program to do this??

Thanx

ap0calypse

ERROR: The command line of DeuSF is too big for DOS (try using shorter paths)
Because DeuSF is Dos based, the command line parameter can only be a few characters long. All you need to do is have all the PWAD files you want to merge directly under your C: drive(or any other drive), so the path will be C:\atc2.wad, C:\atc2sf.wad and so on... then try "join PWADS", it should work.

NOTE: you don't need to do this when merging IWADS though

Is there another (more successful) program program to do this??
There are other programs used to merge wads but the majority are DOS based meaning no GUI interface so if your not used to a text based interface I wouldn't recommend them. WinTex 5.0 is the easiest, user friendly program for merging wads but you could try a google search on "doom editing software" and see if you can find a better one. There are also doom level editing software (e.g. DeePsea) that can merge wads but most are too complex to use just for merging wads.

So please enlighten me....There was a link posted aways back in this thread, it lead to a torrent file about 103mb. Well it had 20 WAD files, inlcuding Doom64 and Goldeneye64, both work for me on the latest release of the Doom Emu. However, for some reason when I skimmed through to find the link I couldn't stumble accross it. I'll check again after this post, but if you also cannot find it, I did save all the wads on my computer, and if you have AIM or whatever, just PM me or post here how you think I might go about finding somewhere to upload these.

EDIT: I went through and can't find the link, maybe the mods took it off because it had commercial wads in there too. Anywho, I also found out you've managed to start up Doom64 but only have made it to level 5 and thats where the fun begins. Unforunately I havent made it that far, actually have yet to beat the first level, still trying to get a feel for the controls. But I'll let you know what happens.

Oh, my file is 24 mb or so big, the Doom64 wad, if it helps. Maybe we aren't even playing the same one.

How do you get Wolfendoom to work? There's an error when i start it?
Few Questions -
Whats the error message? What version of Wolfendoom (is it the first episode?) Do other wads work for you?

Things to check -
1. The file name must be "Doom2.wad"
2. This wad needs merging with the original doom2 wad file. (Use Wintex)
3. Wad file must be saved in the wad folder e.g. PSP\GAME\DOOM\WAD\Doom2.wad

If you've done all this and it still doesn't run you probably have a corrupt wad file

can anyone confirm that the goldeneye wad works with the latest version of doom titled Doom-PSP-v0.04-SS-b5?

surely someone has tried this awesome mod out on the latest doom release.

please let me know if you got it working. for me, it always crashes as soon as i choose a difficulty setting in the game.

but my doom folder in my 1.5 psp is renamed to be hidden, could that be the reason? i'm think but am not positive that it didn't work when it wasn't renamed either.

if you got it working, please please emailed me the wad that works for you, as well as the version of doom that you use (if not the one i'm using) to [email protected] (it would be awesome if you could include any of the other cool wads like the doom 64 or quake 2 wads but it's okay if you don't).

I hate to sound this stupid...But! How do you get the Doom2.wad that all these wad files require? Do you just get the commercial version of DOOM 2 and put its wad file in the wads folder on the PSP? When trying to get these other wads to work do you have to merge them with the D2.wad or do you put them in the wad folder with the D2.wad?

The only wad I've actually gotten to run other than Doom1(shareware) is Heretic... The others keep saying they are missing something or worse they just lock up...

Do you just get the commercial version of DOOM 2 and put its wad file in the wads folder on the PSP?

Yep! Its that simple...

To use other wads(PWADs, Total Conversions) just merge (with a wad editor, e.g."Wintex") the wad you want with the Doom2.wad and place in the Wads folder with the name "Doom2.wad".

If you need help with merging there is a tutorial on how to do it further back in this thread...

ALL WADS WILL WORK, UNLESS THEY USE HEXEN SPECIFIC MAP FUNCTIONS, DECORATE, OUTSIZE SPRITES OR FLATS, OR CONTAIN MUSIC LUMPS THAT DO NOT CONTAIN MUS FORMAT DATA.
