So, i have just purchased a dreamcast. What a machine!!

I got it with 8 games, and now i plan to buy many many more.

But obviously the homebrew scene is huge (and im on the right site for it).

I was wondering what is the MUST HAVE homebrew for it? (dont just point me to the downloads page, i want to know the must have stuff, and whats to come)

Cheers (JKK, you know you wanna help me :D)

Thanks so much Christuserloeser.

1 question, is there a 100% full speed with sound SMS emulator?

I know the emulator i downloaded for the Saturn was close, so im guessing the DC does?

I would say the SMS emulator I have is roughly about 90% which is good, when I find the disc I burned it to I will edit this post and add the name of the emulator. :D

I was always impressed with SMS +. There were two versions last I knew. I think the one I played with a lot was by pascal? It's great. I had written a program to download the screenshots for the menu, but it no longer works because the screenshots were hosted on a subdomain of dcemulation.com that no longer exists. But the emulator is still awesome.

SMEG is pretty, pretty, pretty good (yay! Curb is back on TV) too, but I dunno if it's 100% speedwise.

As for essential homebrew I'd probably suggest The Beats of rage collections 1 and 2 and the Sandman disc as great places to start.

The demo for Drill is very good too (http://www.drill.rr.nu/) - it's a shame it never got any further, and Gianas Return should be ace when that get finished. Oh, and Quake runs well too.

Congrats on getting the Dreamcast too. I hope you got Soul Calibur with it.

Quick reply: SMSplusDC and SMEG both run full speed.

So are 'all' of the DC servers down now? none left?

All of the "official" servers are gone, oh and don't mock Chu Chu Rocket since you've not seen it at it's best (which is online) but sadly you won't unless someone dedicates a server.

Chu Chu with 3 mates is great, totally nuts and crazy. Actually, it's perfectly suited for XBLA too.

I was never that fond of UT. I found the frame rate really iffy, esp. in split screen mode. I guess I was more into Quake III. UT did have better variety in levels and weapons though. Outrigger was a decent arcade FPS too.

Triv1um, what games did you get with it?

SEGA should've kept the Chu Chu Rocket server open!

If they were crap, people wouldn't be playing them 8 years after their releases.
Starlancer and Quake 3 Arena are considered 2 big titles for Dreamcast. They have high scores on all the gaming sites.

Triv1um, what games did you get with it?

Resident Evil Code: Veronica
Soul Calibur
Sega Rally 2
Sonic Adventure
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
Tomb Raider: Last Revelation
102 Dalmations - Puppies to the rescue
ChuChu Rocket.

It was a fixed bundle from GameStation, so I didnt get the choice of games, but I thought the selection wasnt too bad. (except 102 Dalmations)

I got the Dreamcast, 1 pad (with VMU), and those games for £25 (bargin)

I recommend these excellent titles (in my opinion):

Sonic Adventure 2

Phantasy Star Online

Almost Everything except Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike and Shenmue are on this list, but DONT get Sega Smash Pack Vol. 1 (possibly the first collection of emulated genesis games for a console), the emulation is awful. Sonic 1 lags and is glitchy, and it sounds like its 8-bit renditions of the music. If you want genesis games, use the newest release of GenesisPlusDC (but make sure that you own the game legally :D )

True, it is cheap. But it is emulated with much better results for Genesis Plus...Which is free

It looks like you have some decent titles to get started with. If you like the roaming adventure type I'd say play Soul Reaver before Tomb Raider as I think it's a much better example of that sort of game. It's similar in many ways but far less frustrating to control.

If you have the spare cash I'd recommend:

Arcade Stick
DC-X Swap Disc for imports
Ikaruga
Rez
Samba De Amigo with Maracas

Out of the more common PAL releases that have not been already mentioned by JKK, I think these are all good:

Rayman 2
MSR
Powerstone 1 & 2
Jet Set Radio
Capcom Vs SNK
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Crazy Taxi
Virtua Tennis 2
Bangai-O
Tony Hawk's 2

I really like soul reaver, tomb raider sucks ass though.

When i have some spare cash (spent the little i had left to mod up the DC, gonna spray it and LED it up, If it turns out nice i will post pics when its done.)

I will go mad and buy loads.

Mine has been sadly neglected of late, pushed aside for the seductive wares and shiny promise of HD and decent single player FPS games on my 360.

I still have plenty of games to play on it yet but haven't even got round to Shenmue 2 yet, let alone some of the cheapo ones I picked up along the way.

If you are using a CRT TV you may have some fun with a light gun and House Of The Dead 2 and Confidential Mission. Both are great for quick blasts.

You may want to invest in a VGA cable at some stage too, as the DC looks sweet on a CRT monitor via VGA. Soul Calibur is really crisp and Ikaruga looks the dogs' nuts. You really can't go wrong with post-pub Soul Calibur. You owe it to your mates to get another controller.

Sonic Adventure 1
Sonic Adventure 2
Sonic Shuffle
Street Fighter III: Double Impact
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike

Virtua Fighter 3
Virtua Cop 2 (The ONLY game you should get Sega Smash Pack for.)

For Homebrew I would reccomend,
Sonic Robo Blast 2
Retro Sonic
GenesisPlusDC
NesterDC SE
Bleemcast!
MAME4ALL (Plays CPS1 and 80s games)
AES4ALL (Neo Geo AES emulator)
DC Divx (plays videos fairly well)

On the other hand, I do not reccomend using SNES Emulators (Although SNES4ALL's Future looks bright). I've tried simple games like Megaman 7 and Super Mario World on DreamSNES using European roms (which of course run at a slower 50 FPS) and Mode 7 off, and they run at maybe 40 FPS with a lot of missing textures/objects.

i use discjuggler trial edition which is PERFECT (in my opinion) for Dreamcast Homebrew.

Trial Version records a max of 700MB at lowest speed possible which works better than recording at a super fast speed.

Just get a CDI based game Run it through DiscJuggler pop a disc in and hit record.

BBAs are hard to come by though.
Not really. Check e-bay. + theres a hack on making ur Broadband \ wifi connected PC - laptop in to a Dialup server for DC so it goes online. Wonder if there is a serial port Hack? (coders cable + Internet Ready PC = ONLINE FUN! )

No where except eBay now. All the store that carried it are sold out, so you either need to find one when they pop up on eBay or build one yourself.

There's a post in the DC Dev forum I started that has a list of what you need and a link to a site that sends free samples of the needed serial chip, if you decide to make it.
