I thought I'd give NesterDC a shot, but I'm having a few problems with it, and the readme file is no help at all...

1. I'm not a huge fan of wasting an entire CD that's only filled around 10%, so I'd like to SBI this with a few other things. I found an SBI for it, says it hasn't been tested though, and you still need the builder program. So...

2. How do I build it manually? Do I really have to ZIP all of my ROMs, or can I just throw them in the folder naked? Is there a character limit on filenames, or a limit to the number of files per folder? I tried using the builder, but if it's not going to recognize the homebrews and translations, there's hardly any point.

3. I really could care less about screenshots/box art/etc., and now that I know it will damage my laser, I'd rather prefer to not have them. I saw a few screenshots, will I get a big list of ROMs to sort through, or will it show one ROM at a time, with a big box where the art should be?

4. The readme says it's based on NesterDC 7.1, and the readme for 7.1 says it supports FDS, but the SE readme makes no mention of it. Did FDS support get removed, or is it still secretly there? How about Zapper support?

Okay, I think those are all the questions I had...I did a few searches, but couldn't really find anything. I'm almost tempted to just burn this SBI for 6.0 instead.

Afaik you can't just use the SBI for NesterSE, you need the original installer (because of the way the disc layout works):

Download the installer:

More info about SE:

Official site:

One thing about the laser damage rumor: All usage of your Dreamcast will at some point wear out the laser. The more you use it the sooner it will wear out. There is no other or deeper connection between the laser and Nester SE or using CDRs than that but that's where these rumors come from. Besides, you can simply re-calibrate the laser within a few minutes:

If you don't like to hear the laser working then stick with a smaller selection of your favorite games and tell the installer to only download title screens and NSFs, and there won't be any problem at all for the Dreamcast to handle that.

The only version with light gun support is "NesterDC v7.1+b", compiled by Warmtoe. No version of v7.x will work with DreamInducer/SBIs though, because of a strange bug that never really got solved. You'd have to burn the plain files download with BootDreams if you want to use a any 7.x version of Nester.

If you want to use Nester with DreamInducer (SBIs), I recommend v6.0:

It also has the overall highest compatibility of the pre-SE Nester releases and even has better support for fan translations and hacks than SE.

Alright, thanks, I'll just go with 6.0.
