With a demo at GDC, and impressions and interviews going up left and right, now would be a good time to discuss the shortcomings of your game right? Of course. The Funcom Product Manager Jorgen Tharaldsen told MTV Multiplayer (http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/02/18/funcom-still-wants-age-of-conan-on-xbox-360-but-controller-remains-biggest-obstacle) that the game still has no release window for 360 and that the PC version will ship in May. Multiplayer even hints that the console release will not be seen until next year, a sorry state of affairs if the PC version is set to ship in a little over three months. It's easy to see why the team hasn't made much progress considering they haven't even touched what they call their largest obstacle, the controller interface. Tharaldsen even goes so far as to say that PC gamers would be unable to use their 360 controllers in the PC version, because the game was so complicated. But, if MMO's are so hard to use controllers with why do people play WoW with gamepads (http://www.wowinsider.com/2007/10/16/playing-wow-with-an-xbox-360-controller-via-switchblade/)?

can someone please give me a reason why it would be so hard? I can think of several ways (as i'm sure many other gamers can as well) that it can be done. First i'm assuming that combat is not real time as in oblivion , but rather more like WoW where you pick your action from a bar right? If so do a macros type thing like in oblivion, but since mmorpg's like wow and conan don't really have realtime combat, that leaves more buttons on the 360 controller free. In oblivion on 360 you simply tap on a direction on the d-pad and you access one of 8 macros, the same can be done for mmorpg's but expand on that. For example since the left and right trigger would be free, you could hold left trigger and then tap a direction on the d-pad to access a macro let go of the left trigger and you go back to the default d-pad macros. The same thing would apply for the right trigger. This way would give us 24 slots for actions. and that is just with the two triggers and the d-pad. It would be simple for the gamer to know where they have their actions mapped. Maybe you would like to have your standard actions to the d-pad, heling and status magics on left trigger+d-pad combo, and attack magics on the right trigger+d-pad combo. It is just an idea , but i mean these guys get paid to think and there are plenty of ways to go around the controller issue. It shouldn't even be an issue to begin with.
