Just about everything you need to know:
PlayStation Portable Homebrew Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Portable_homebrew)

The Files you need:
Dark-AleX - PSP Developer
(http://www.dark-alex.org/)
PSP Firmware (http://www.psp-hacks.com/category/36)

Pandora's Battery (http://www.noobz.eu/joomla/news/unbricker-for-all-firmwares.html)

A short answer would be, the M33 releases are a series of custom firmwares which allow you all the features of the corresponding Sony update, with the added ability to run homebrew and more.

You really should download the files and read the read-me's.
However, there are many options.

Get First familiar with the PSP memory card folder system (http://home.satx.rr.com/mybsod2/pspfolderfilechart.htm)

Here are a couple of Guides to get you started:

1. DCEMU - [GUIDE]3.51/3.52 M33 update from 1.5 and CFW (http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=75007)

2. 3.90 m33-x / 1.50 Kernel v2 Installation Guide (http://freeplay.ircdotcom.com/fw/3.90m33/)
