    An online auction of rare gaming items and more is the latest industry effort to raise money towards helping fight against the Australian bushfires.
    Organised by a small group of Australian developers, led by Defiant Development founder Morgan Jaffit, the initiative is called Game Devs For Firies and follows a similar format to the recent #AuthorsForFireys auction.
    Starting tomorrow (Tuesday, January 14), games companies and professionals will be offering signed games, one-off experiences, services and more via the hashtags #gamedevsforfiries and #gamedevsforfireys.
    The highest bidder for each item will be instructed on how to donate directly to an Australian state fire service, either of the seller's nomination or the bidder's choice. Once they proof the donation has been made, their prize will be dispatched.
    Jaffit himself is offering a signed copy of the Hand of Fate, plus the board game version and "a one-hour tarot reading/real-life Hand of Fate RP experience."

    PlayStation 5 may not be heading to Los Angeles this June, but Xbox Series X certainly will.
    In the wake of Sony's revelation to GamesIndustry.biz that it will not be attending E3 for the second year in a row, Xbox boss Phil Spencer took to Twitter to assure that his company would still be present.
    "Our team is hard at work on E3, and we look forward to sharing with all who love to play what's ahead of us," he wrote. "Our artform has consistently been propelled by the cross-section of creativity and technical progress. 2020 is a milestone year in that journey for Team Xbox."
    Both Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 are due on shelves this Christmas. While the two platform holders will almost certainly host their own reveal events prior to E3, as they have in past generations, the LA-based showcase has historically been a crucial event in building up hype ahead of a new machine.

It may not be as drastic of an update as the previous one, which finally gave us the Vulkan renderer we'd all been waiting for, but v1.16.1 brings with it some much-appreciated fixes under the hood. Various minor issues regarding Vulkan were ironed out, including removing unnecessary calls to certain variables, fixing some graphical bugs, and better index decoding for supported CPU's.     It's rare for a company to have such a strong entry into the games market as Sony did with the original PlayStation. What started as a collaborative project with Nintendo in the late '80s soon turned into its own product, taking the market by storm in 1994 in Japan and much of the rest of the world the following year. In March 1999, Sony told investors that it had shipped 54.42 million consoles, a figure that went north of 70 million over the following 12 months.
    But the people heading up Sony's brand new video game venture knew that it wasn't enough to just do well the once -- you needed to land another smash hit in the bag before you could consider yourself successful. Going into the PlayStation 2's launch, there was a degree of trepidation among Sony's leaders, all of whom had been in the industry for a while and knew what a fickle beast it could be.
    "It was always in the back of my mind," says Chris Deering, who was Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) Europe's boss at the time. "If PlayStation was ever successful, the real proof would be to have the follow up come out and do as well or maybe better."

    Jack Tretton, who was heading up SCE US, adds: "Everybody was euphoric coming off the success of PlayStation. We had set the bar high but it really exceeded our expectations. Going into PlayStation 2, we were certainly confident, but we were also cautious because it was very rare that the leader of one generation could hold that position in the next. There was a great deal of trepidation not to get caught up in our success and to make sure that we redoubled our efforts going into the next generation."
    The original PlayStation had been targeted towards a broad audience. There was promotion aimed at bringing kids on board, like the goofy and colourful Society Against PlayStation commercials, as well as marketing like the rather gruesome print ad featuring two women with bleeding noses for WipEout. For the PS2, however, SCE wanted to bring in a more mature audience. This was part of the reason why Twin Peaks creator David Lynch was hired to make the unsurprisingly bizarre The Third Place trailer.

    In the last three years, the number of adults age 50 and up who play video games regularly has increased, from 38% in 2016 to 44% in 2019.
    An AARP survey of 3,737 people ages 50 and older identified 1,664 respondents as gamers -- meaning they owned a gaming device (phone, computer, tablet, console) and played a game on it at least once per month. 49% of women surveyed played games, compared to 40% of men.
    Of those who didn't play games, 57% said it was because they were just "not a video game person." Only 5% said it was due to not understanding how the technology worked, and only 9% reported their lack of gaming as a view that games were for younger people.
    Collectively, those who did play games averaged about five hours of play per week. 47% said they played daily, up from 40% in 2016, and four out of five played games at least once per week.
    73% of the older adults who played games said they played on phones or other mobile devices, while 47% used computers or laptops. Only 13% played on consoles. The best-loved genre was puzzle and logic, with 49% reporting it as their favorite, with "card and tile" games (not gambling or casino games) as the favorite of 47%. Only 5% preferred action-adventure, and 5% preferred shooters.

    MAME v0.217 is released. MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. When used in conjunction with images of the original arcade game's ROM and disk data, MAME attempts to reproduce that game as faithfully as possible on a more modern general-purpose computer. MAME can currently emulate several thousand different classic arcade video games from the late 1970s through the modern era.

    RetroArch v1.8.2 is released. RetroArch is a multi-system emulator for Linux, Windows, Mac OS X and *BSD. It is formerly known as SSNES. Its design and background is quite different than most other emulators as RetroArch does not implement an emulation core itself. RetroArch talks to libretro, a generic emulator core API. This means that RetroArch is core agnostic, and it does not care which emulator core is running.

    Currently there are libretro implementations for systems such as SNES, NES, GBA, GB/GBC, Genesis, and even arcade games (Final Burn Alpha).

    libretro isn't only usable for emulators. A preliminary port of an open source reimplementation of Cave Story has been ported to libretro as well.

    RetroArch believes in modularity. The application itself is a command-line driven application suitable for HTPC and/or headless use. There also exists a GUI frontend for RetroArch, supporting every single config option available in RetroArch.

    Nintendo has won an injunction against hacking group Team-Xecuter after it allegedly sold and distributed modded Nintendo Switch hardware, as well as pirated games.
    TorrentFreak has shared a copy of the injunction, which prohibits Team-Xecuter's Sergio Moreno from modifying, selling, renting, or distributing unauthorized copies of Nintendo technology, software, or trademarked material, as well as destroying the existing modded devices and pirated software.


    Nintendo has long been aggressive in stopping copyright violations, hacks, and mods of its systems. Team-Xecuter's websites were a few of several ordered to be blocked by UK ISPs in 2019 for offering Switch hacks. Additionally, it has gone after severalROM sites successfully in the last few years.

    Intrepid Izzy by Senile Team combines platforming, beat ’em up and adventure elements to create a unique experience with depth, character and above all, fun. Here comes the late December 2019 development update:

    Costumes
    Costumes have been completed for some time, but sometimes creative people get that creative itch, and they just can’t help themselves. In short: another costume has been made. Izzy was already wearing a miner’s helmet in the mine cart level, but now she can don the entire outfit! So costumes are now super completed.
    Programming
    Programming is practically finished. Everything works and the big list of bugs is now greatly reduced. Just some finishing touches and we’re done! Finishing touches such as achievements/trophies/goals. Whatever you call them, they’re a fun little extra in games and we believe there should be a nice mix of easy and harder trophies. And most importantly, they should have silly names – but you will find out what we came up with in due time.
    Enemies
    We have enemies by the bucketloads! I’m going to call this one finished.
    Bosses
    As you’ve seen in recent updates, we have been hard at work on the boss fights. We are still perfecting them, and depending on how that goes, may decide to add one or two more.
    Levels
    The levels are pretty much done, but we’re still tying some things together to improve the overall progression, and creating a grand entrance to the final boss. And of course the gradual tweaking, improving and expanding of the levels will continue bit by bit until the very last moment – all to make the game the best we can. Completion: 99%
    Music
    Almost finished! We just need to create an ending with some appropriate ending music to end all ending.
    Release
    So what about the release date you ask? Well, we’re not yet in a position to have an actual date. But we can tell you what the plan is.
    We expect to complete “release candidate 1” as soon as January. This basically means the first complete version of the game, which is to be thoroughly tested to evaluate if it is ready for release. Depending on the test results, we may proceed with release, or create revised versions RC2, RC3 as needed.
    First, we want to release the PC version, since no certifications or CD pressing is needed. This version will also be easiest to patch and update in case the need should arise. It will be released as soon as possible after a release candidate has passed our quality control.
    The second step is to create the console versions based on the latest updated version. During this step Roel will have to put the finishing touches on the PS4 and Dreamcast versions. Naturally this will require some work on specific programming and graphical requirements, but also age rating, Sony certification, CD pressing for the Dreamcast, packaging, and all the little details that will pop up during development.
    To estimate a timing for the console versions is even more tricky than for the PC version because we also depend on a lot of external factors. However, it will be as soon as possible and in 2020
