The new area spans 30,000 square feet, and features indoor and outdoor areas in order to be attract business all year round.
Dan Mitchell, director of location based entertainment, Rovio, said: "We are very excited to have an Angry BirdsActivity Park at Lightwater Valley. It has been a great partnership with everyone involved, and we are all looking forward to the opening for our fans from the UK and abroad. We feel that the birds have really found a great new home here."
Allan Leech, CEO of Lightwater Valley Attractions, added: "In 2012 Angry Birds was the most popular paid-for app on Apple’s App Store, so when we were looking at a £1 million investment in creating a new attraction here at the park it was clearly a popular choice. We are already seeing an increase in advanced ticket sales and anticipate making a £2.5 million impact to the region’s economy over the next five years."
Rob Hetherington, national development manager for Angry Birds at equipment manufacturer Lappset UK, continued: "It has been very exciting to build the largest Angry Birds Activity Park in the country. The parks are a healthy way for the whole family – from toddlers to grandparents – to enjoy the hugely popular Angry Birds theme. Lappset is very keen to encourage people to get outdoors and get moving and if you can enjoy yourself while doing so, then all the better."

Warner Bros' Injustice: Gods Among Us takes the top spot on the charts in a dismal month for retail games
The NPD Group has released its report for the month of April, and partially thanks to a lack of compelling new software, total industry sales slumped 25 percent, reaching only $495.2 million. Software sales (including PC) for the month fell 17 percent to $267.8 million while hardware sales plummeted 42 percent to $109.5 million, likely due to more and more people hearing about next-gen platforms coming out later this year and deciding to wait. Sales of accessories were down as well, falling 19 percent to $131.4 million.
Another factor in April's numbers was that Easter fell in March this year but April last year. “Easter typically accounts for a 10 percent boost in the month in which it occurs," NPD analyst Liam Callahan noted.
The software charts were led by Warner Bros' new release, Injustice: Gods Among Us - the first time since April 2011 that a fighting game (Mortal Kombat) ranked in the top spot - and Deep Silver's new title, Dead Island: Riptide. Trion Worlds' transmedia-focused Defiance, which ties into the SyFy TV show, also managed to make a dent, placing fifth overall. While sales have been down, on the bright side, games that topped the charts did perform better than during the same period a year ago.
“Despite overall declines, April title launches in 2013 fared better than games that launched in April 2012, up 118 percent in unit sales and 130 percent in dollar sales. This increase was driven by games like Injustice: Gods Among Us, Dead Island: Riptide, and Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins,” said Callahan.
He added, "Overall declines are stemming from the performance of games launched prior to April; for example, the decrease in sales performance of March launches. Specifically, when looking at video games launching in March 2012, month 2 sales represented 25 percent of the total first two months of sales, which contracted to 17 percent for March 2013 launches. One reason for this might be the decrease in the number of new titles, which can cause sales of a title to be 'front loaded' with a greater amount of sales happening in the first month of its release.”
Here's the top 10 list, according to NPD:

Day one delivery is crucial to online retailers. It drives pre-orders and secures sales that may otherwise have gone to High Street rivals.
However, this is dependent on shipping and delivery times.
To ensure a game arrives on release day – besting the convenience of picking it up in-store – sites must depend on Royal Mail, couriers or other third-party services.
Many sites send out games early to account for potential delays: a seemingly sensible solution, but one that can result in consumers receiving the title ahead of the publisher’s street date.
This is long-running issue came to a head this month when ShopTo refused to stock any future Activision products over a dispute around Call of Duty: Ghosts.
Site owner Igor Cipoletta told MCV the publisher’s shipping policy, which limits when retailers can send out copies of the game, damages ShopTo’s ability to guarantee day one delivery to customers.
Some sites use this as justification for early shipping. Naturally publishers grumble, but the most vocal protestors is often other retailers, who feel unfairly disadvantaged by the few that purposefully ignore shipping rules.
But should all online retailers be allowed to ship early if it ensures customers get their goods on day one?

“If a good friend agreed not to tell my mum
about a surprise party and they took it upon
themselves to tell her four days early,
I would not be happy.”

Craig Constantinides - business development boss, Go 2 Games

“Absolutely not,” said Gameseek MD Stephen Staley. “If you allow that sort of activity, instead of sales being about price and quality of service, it’ll all be about back-room shady deals and that’s not good for the customer in the long run.
“Keep the playing field level and the customer will benefit because retailers will have to up their game instead of just relying on ‘buying’ their next sale.”
Go 2 Games’ business development boss Craig Constantinides added: “An agreement is in place for a reason. Perhaps it’s because of the online retailers that break new release rules in order to maximise profit and brand awareness that we all now suffer unreasonable demands from customers.
“If a good friend agreed not to tell my mum about a surprise party and they took it upon themselves to tell her four days early, I would not be happy.”
Publishers might be more lenient if early shipping was the only way to guarantee purchases reaches their destination in time, but most delivery services – including Royal Mail – already offer faster deliveries to those willing to invest.
“We dispatch all pre-orders using next day guaranteed delivery to ensure that our customers receive them on release day,” said Games Trade’s co-director Nadir Husain.
“This is obviously a more costly option, but customers that pre-order should be rewarded for enthusiasm and brand loyalty.”
The hackers, Ryan Cleary, Jake Davis, Mustafa al-Bassam and Ryan Ackroyd were jailed over their involvement in a number of cyber attacks on high-profile organisations.
Targets of the group included News International, EA, Sony Pictures and the UK Serious Organised Crime Agency.
As part of the attacks, the group targeted the high-profile targets and infiltrated each firm's security in order to obtain sensitive data and post it online, whilst also knocking some of the targets' own websites offline.
The men received sentences of between 20 and 32 months for their individual involvement in the attacks, whilst also facing the possibility of extradition to the USA in order to face trial by US officials after they filed their own indictments.
In addition to the hacking charges, which include infiltration the US Air Force's computer systems, Cleary pleaded guilty to possession of indecent images of both babies and children, of which he will face additional charges at a later date.
Meanwhile, Ackroyd faces further charges after pleading guilty to carrying out an unauthorised act to impair the operation of a computer, in addition to stealing data from Sony.
The final men, Bassam and Davis, both plead guilty to charges of hacking and launching cyber attacks against high-profile organisations, including the CIA.

Trade group exec says attendees overwhelmingly pleased with the show, confirms it will return to LACC through 2016
For Rich Taylor, there's been at least one constant throughout all the turmoil the gaming industry has faced in recent years. As the Entertainment Software Association senior vice president of communications and industry affairs explained to GamesIndustry International, that steadfast rock of certainty has been that people will question whether the Electronic Entertainment Expo is still relevant.
"It's interesting. I've been at ESA now for six years, and that question has come up pretty much every year," Taylor said. "I think the show answers the question itself both through the level of attendance and participation, from the news that comes out of it, and it remains extraordinarily... not just relevant, but vital to the industry, and vital to those who want to share news through the billions of impressions that come out of it. When we convene this show, all the attendant eyeballs and ears are pointed toward Los Angeles to see the news that comes out."
"I think people really are fairly thrilled about what we have now and the model we have now, the size we have now, the timing we have now"
Rich Taylor

Despite the questions from industry watchers, Taylor said the E3 feedback from attendees, exhibitors, and ESA member companies hasn't reflected those concerns.
"Right now, the overwhelming finding is where we are now is a really positive sweet spot," Taylor said. "Folks feel good about the room they have for their exhibit space, meeting room options, the number of attendees is still large enough to get all the principal folks that people hope to encounter during the show into the LACC, but also not so overwhelming that you can't actually play and experience the games themselves, which is of course a key part of the show... I think people really are fairly thrilled about what we have now and the model we have now, the size we have now, the timing we have now. That seems to be where the model will sit for the foreseeable future."
One part of the model that will stay the same is the show's home, as the ESA has recently committed to running E3 out of the Los Angeles Convention Center through 2016. While there were concerns last year that construction of an NFL football stadium next to the LACC could limit the building's available space for the show, Taylor said the plan for the stadium construction has encountered setbacks. Combined with assurances from the LACC and AEG to minimize any impact on E3, that means the possible new stadium is at this point "a bit of a non-issue" for E3, Taylor said.
While the general format of the show is set for the near future, Taylor said the ESA is still adapting to keep up with the changing industry, specifically the growing mobile market. In response to a cry for better coverage of that sector, Taylor said this year's E3 will feature an Online Mobile Gaming Pavilion where gaming for handheld devices will have its own dedicated space, "perhaps more conducive to the experience of playing those games."
The combined efforts of new Gears of War, God of War, BioShock, and Tomb Raider games goosedMarch's NPD-reported US retail software sales up a little less than 2 percent, but the industry was apparently unable to build on that momentum in April. In a note to investors today, Cowen and Company analyst Doug Creutz said he expects the NPD Group's April numbers--set for release this Thursday--to show that software sales dipped 13 percent year-over-year.
The biggest difficulty for April sales was a light release slate, with Creutz expecting only a single title, DC-themed fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us, expected to sell more than 250,000 units. Creutz believes that game sold around 424,000 copies.
With few surefire hits on the schedule, Creutz is expecting the NPD to report double-digit monthly sales declines for the industry through July. August is expected to show a return to growth, although the main reason for that will be an earlier launch for the annualized Madden NFL, which fell in the September reporting period last year. Despite that shift, Creutz expects industry software sales growth to continue in September and October thanks to anticipated releases like Grand Theft Auto V and Battlefield 4.
Of the 1,000 parents surveyed, 67 per cent admitted to asking their teenage children for technology related advice.
Matt Leeser, Head of Buying at John Lewis comments: “Technology moves at such a fast pace, you only have to look at how touch screen gadgets have come into force in the last four years. Children are more exposed to new gadgets and services that’s why parents are turning to their tech savvy kids for advice. At John Lewis, we know how important it is for parents to get expert advice when they’re buying technology for themselves or the family – this is why we train our partners to provide guidance in-store and keep them updated with the latest trends.”
The findings show that technology help courtesy of teenagers isn’t just restricted to gadgets, 21 per cent of parents go to their children for help setting up their social media profile.
Mae Moran, aged thirteen, commented: “My mum’s always asking me how to use her mobile. She’s only just worked out how to use the camera but can never download any of her photos. I’ve got her using SkyDrive now, which is so much easier. Because I synched up all our devices, she can save her pictures down when she’s at work and then I do the editing for her on my laptop. Next step will be to get her uploading them to Facebook.”
28 per cent of parents surveyed said they turn to their children for tech advice ahead of friends, partners or work colleagues.
“The research shows that busy parents are gleaning the expertise of a younger, tech savvy generation to save time and help them get the most out of their gadgets,” said Abigail Rappoport, Microsoft Office Division Director UK.
The research, commissioned by John Lewis and Microsoft and conducted by Opinium, lays out the top five tech troubles that parents seek help for from their children, including installing products or services (46%), help using their phone (45%), using the internet (41%), help with the TV/home entertainment system (37%), and advice on what products to buy (31%).
A report by Tech Crunch indicates that Microsoft is looking to follow up its initial $300 million investment in Nook with a further bid to take on the firm in its entirety.
Questions were raised following Microsoft's initial investment in Nook given that its device predominantly featured the Android operating system. However, the deal did provide Microsoft with a number of patents and a Windows 8 Nook application.
However, it would appear that Microsoft is taking an even greater interest in the e-reader market, which Tech Crunch opting to explain Microsoft's internal documents on the matter.
"In this plan, Microsoft would redeem preferred units in Nook Media, which also includes a college textbook division, leaving it with the digital operation — e-books, as well as Nook e-readers and tablets," reads Tech Crunch's report.
The documents continue to reveal that Nook is set to discontinue its Android-based tablet range, instead moving its content to a third-party partner, who we can safely assume would be Microsoft.

High Street giant GAME says it will reach out to software-starved consumers with a series of major events this summer.
The firm responded to MCV’s story last week about a lack of games coming out over the next four months.
It said it would work ‘smarter’ to entice consumers, before announcing its biggest lock-in event so far for PS3-exclusive action game, The Last of Us.
75 GAME stores will open late between May 3rd and June 9th so that consumers can go hands-on with the title before it launches on June 14th.
“We all want to get our hands on the latest releases, so when there aren’t as many new releases around we have to be a bit smarter,” GAME’s brand engagement manager James Taylor told MCV.
“Our lock-ins are here to get gamers together to whet their appetite for new games, to build up excitement and create buzz around upcoming releases – and, of course, for gamers to pre-order. Lock-ins aren’t just about the games. They’re great social events too – a chance for our customers to meet other gamers, test their skills and hopefully make new friends in the process. The events are about building a local gaming community around our stores, which is something that online retailers just can’t do.
“We have quite a few exciting things in the pipeline and we can’t wait to share the details. The Last of Us will be our biggest lock-in to date with 75 GAME stores. In the past few weeks alone we’ve run a Grid 2 lock-in series and an Injustice lock-in tournament.”
GAME says it will look to experiment with new in-store events over the coming weeks, too.
“What you’re seeing is the result of over six months of work and each one seems to be bigger and better than the last,” said Taylor. “We’re getting great feedback from our community and we’re always looking to develop them and adopt new ideas. We’ve run events in local cinemas for example to allow more of our gamers to get involved so we really are open to every idea.”
The general trend towards debating the smallest detail of a videogame in light of recent news articles, be they gun crimes or random violence, disturbs me. The last few issues of Edge featured articles that called into question the very reason I began my own dark descent into gaming, namely that a game is now seen as an adult art form and any game that does not fit this billing is sidelined as a novelty.Even the letters pages show some sign of this ‘truth’ being universal, but I’m taking a stand for the candy-coloured worlds of fun that are still out there, shouting to be heard among the demons, guns and noir palettes that currently dominate the gaming landscape. There are still those who believe in my cause; the recent resurgence of Rayman, Nintendo’s staunch stance in providing joy-filled worlds and many mobile developers who are, perhaps, trying to relive their youth proves this. However, how often are these given the label of ‘casual’ or brushed off as inconsequential?Yes, gamers have grown up and a lot of those franchises and development teams have grown with them, but shouldn’t the basis of gaming be about fun? Are people who get into gaming through the so-called casual markets now expected to ‘graduate’ to FPSes? Is that the true path to happiness or just an expectation? Should a 30-something (or 40, in my case) gamer be embarrassed when playing the latest Mario title? Our hobby should be about the escape from reality and its disillusioned, cynical society. Instead, I fear that it’s being drawn into it.
Paul ByronWe perhaps wouldn’t agree that games need to be fun, whatever that word really means. But we do propose a new gaming charter: no one should ever feel embarrassed to play Mario. Who’s with us?

Dixons Retail is looking to strengthen its games offering with the addition of the Gaming Bunker. PCR checks out London’s newest destination for PC gamers.
Retailers don't need to sell games in order to be a part of the gaming scene. That’s the belief of Dixons’ Simon Urquhart, category manger of PC gaming peripherals and components, and one deeply rooted behind the firm’s latest initiative: the Gaming Bunker.
Games retailers have long struggled in a market that has witnessed consumers increasingly move online in order to get their hands on the latest game releases. Digital alternatives such as Steam and Green Man Gaming offer both convenience and highly competitive pricing at a level the traditional High Street retailer simply can’t match. Meanwhile, the growing popularity of indie and free-to-play titles has further fragmented the games market to an inaccessible level for many.
Over the last twelve months alone we’ve seen the likes of GAME, Blockbuster and HMV all slip into administration, and whilst all three brands have survived to live another day, it has come at a price. Store closures, job losses and even the latter stripping out its games offering have been the result of an increasingly difficult market.
But whilst retailers are reluctant to give up on boxed games, Urquhart believes the High Street should be widening its scope and focusing its collective efforts on additional areas of gaming. That’s where the Gaming Bunker comes in.

“The Gaming Bunker is a driving range and pro-shop for mice, keyboards and headsets.”

Simon Urquhart, Dixons Retail
Based at Dixons’ Tottenham Court Road store, the 500 sq ft Bunker is a dedicated gaming space, which features ten LAN networked PCs complete with the latest hardware and gaming accessories.
Each loaded with some of the most popular, current PC titles, the appeal of the bunker is clear: allow consumers to get hands on with the latest gamer- orientated gear.
Urquhart likens the experience of the Games Bunker to that seen within golf and the notion of the pro-shop. Whilst etailers offer elements of convenience that the High Street struggle to compete with, retailers have their own tricks up their sleeve.
“You wouldn’t buy a set of golf clubs without swinging them first – the Gaming Bunker is a driving range and pro-shop for mice, keyboards and headsets,” says Urquhart.
It’s a metaphor that certainly rings true for the bustling Bunker. Each machine is custom built with a variety of the latest high-end components and finished with a selection of gaming peripherals aimed at all kinds of gamer. It’s a simple idea but one that meets an ever-present need. For as long as PC gamers remain faithful to their high- spec machines, there will always be a desire for the newest accessories, whether they’re for the entry level gamer or the battle-hardened veteran.
It’s here that both the Gaming Bunker and the typical High Street retailer thrive with their capacity to provide the ‘try before you buy’ approach. Whilst an online review may suffice for last week’s big games release, it can’t provide the level of interaction that would leave a gamer comfortable with spending £100-plus on a high-level gaming keyboard.

A new NPD report has found that the number of players gaming online – along with the number of hours spent by those players online – has increased significantly.
NPD Group's Online Gaming 2013 report surveyed over 8,800 US gamers, and found that 72 per cent stated they played games online. That's up from the 67 per cent reported for the year prior.
The report claimed that the average weekly time spent playing online by these respondents was up 6 per cent, while overall gaming time per week was up 9 per cent. The NPD notes the increase in time online was mirrored across “virtually every type of device,” with PC out in front with 68 per cent (down from 72 per cent last year).
Meanwhile, Mobile showed a significant boost from the year prior, grabbing 56 per cent of the applicable online gaming contingent polled.
The report also found that 62 per cent of players preferred to buy physical games, down from 65 per cent last year.
"While many gamers prefer games in the physical format, the increased availability of digital content paired with a greater amount of connected devices has driven an increase in the number of consumers going online to access the content they want," said NPD analyst Liam Callahan.
A South Korea politician backed by 14 MPs has proposed a bill to labelling online games as a source of addiction and calling for the strict regulation on the sector.
Gamemeca reports, as translated by Kotaku, that Saenuri Party MP Shin Eui-jin has grouped online games with addictive substances such as drugs and alcohol, as well as gambling.

It is claimed that the bill states the governing body should be able to “regulate manufacturing, distribution and sale of addictive substances and also limit the promotion of them".
This could result in more stringent rules on the type of content developers can create in South Korea, and may also affect the marketing of online games.
“It is regretful that the government views games in the same category as drugs and gambling,” said one developer to Inews24.
The entertainment brand will kick off a programme of aggressive marketing this bank holiday, providing customers with a variety of offers designed to drive footfall and reintroduce shoppers to the Blockbuster brand.
Deals include the opportunity to rent any new movie release for one night for £1.99, whilst further offers will become available throughout the weekend.
Additionally, Blockbuster plans to extend its product offering to new markets, including music and books, which the firm believes will compliment its position as an entertainment retailer.
Blockbuster Managing Director Gary Warren said: “We are absolutely focused on building Blockbuster to be a long-term proposition."
"There is a very real gap in the market for an entertainment specialist and, with its strong brand recognition and heritage, Blockbuster is perfectly placed to capitalise on this."
"We are committed to supporting all of our 264 stores and hope to eventually grow the business and create jobs in the local area.”
Blockbuster was saved from administration last month as the brand was acquired by restructuring specialist Gordon Brothers Europe, saving 2,000 jobs and 264 Blockbuster stores.

Call of Duty, Halo 4, Far Cry, Borderlands – all violent games, yes, but the real damage is being done by those that conceal their violence behind a duplicitous family-friendly wrapping.
Yesterday The Guardian published a feature entitled ‘Violence and guns in best-selling video games’ that, to be fair to it, included an absolutely LOVELY interactive graph.
The point of it was to highlight the violent content of last year’s 50 best selling games. According to VGChartz.
Select the likes of Call of Duty: Black Ops II and the pretty wavy lines link to Content Label tags reading ‘Intense Violence’, ‘Strong Language’, ‘Blood and Gore’, ‘Suggestive Themes’, ‘Use of Drugs’ as well as seven tags in the Weapons section – ‘handgun or pistol’, ‘shotgun or rifle’, ‘grenade or explosive’, ‘machine gun’, ‘sniper rifle’, ‘launcher’ and ‘assault rifle’.
The likes of Assassin’s Creed III add ‘Sexual Themes’ and ‘dagger or tomahawk’ to the mix while Mass Effect 3 ticks the ‘Partial Nudity’ and ‘Sexual Content’ boxes.
The real surprise, though, is the number of titles picked up for their alleged violent content. These include the likes of gore-fests Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Mario Kart Wii (Comic Mischief), the barbaric trio of Just Dance 3, Zumba Fitness and Gran Turismo 5 (Lyrics), the blood-thirsty Mario Party 9 and Kinect Sports (Cartoon Violence) and the explicitly vicious Wii Sports (Violence).
Only six games succeed in avoiding any violent tagging – FIFA 13, Kinect Adventures, Madden 13, NBA 2K13, FIFA 12 and Forza 4.
On this basis only 32 per cent of the 50 listed titles contained no violence while 38 per cent were classified as E (Everyone) by the ESRB. 38 per cent contained realistic firearms – which is perhaps less than you would have thought?
Perhaps the real villain, however, is not The Guardian but instead the ESRB, which ultimately is the body, that decided on the content warnings that dictated the data.

As recently as a year ago that’s what we were being told. But GAME’s announcement of a new free-to-play platform is further evidence that retail might just find a role to play in this brave new world of digital gaming.

The service launches with three EA titles including Need for Speed World, Command& Conquer Tiberium Alliances and Lord of Ultima. Battlefield Play4Free and Battlefield Heroes are ‘coming soon’.
It’s not known if other publishers are due to be coming on board, although more titles are most certainly on the way.
“Launching our initial free-to-play offering in partnership with EA is a significant step forward for us at GAME,” a spokesperson stated. “We’re always looking to bring new ways of gaming to the UK’s gaming communities and we are working hard to make sure we can deliver in every digital arena – free-to-play is just the start.”
Retailers shifted just 332,338 games over the last seven days, generating £8m in revenue. But the worse is still to come, say analysts.
In fact, UK retailers told MCV this week they don’t expect the market to grow again until GTA V launches in September.
There are just a smattering of releases due over the next four months, as publisher gear up for the next generation of consoles.
“After 2012’s summer product drought which was blamed at the time on everything from the Olympics to the football to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, it is disappointing to see the games business apparently sleepwalking into the same situation again,” said Kim Bayley, director general of the Entertainment Retailers Association.
“The harsh truth is that new product drives business and without sufficient releases, sales will suffer”
Asda’s games boss Craig Thirkell added: “It’s going to be a long summer – inflation is ahead of wages, changes to benefits came in to effect this month and customers have less disposable money.
“I think a lot will depend upon several announcements and their timings. And also how the format holders continue to offer value to keep the hardware market as buoyant as possible, married with publisher support on key titles from Q4 and Q1 to keep the momentum going.
“I can’t give away too much, but we definitely have plans to engage customers and bring them plenty of opportunity to shop with us over the summer months.”

With the recession impacting demand for home cinema and related categories, Dixons – the UK’s market-leading specialist electronics retailer – decided to repurpose one of its home theatre in-store departments into a destination for PC gamers: The Gaming Bunker.
It features ten networked PCs laid out tournament-style with high-end peripherals (mice, keyboards, headsets) merchandised on the walls. With mice and keyboards stretching well north of £150, the PCs act as a platform to try before you buy – which should help increase conversion. The PCs were custom-built internally by Dixons for the Bunker, an effort supported by Samsung, Intel, and Asus.
The retail assortment includes top gaming brands such as Razer, TurtleBeach, SteelSeries, Corsair, MadCatz, Roccat and Logitech.
While all of these products are available online, the Gaming Bunker adds roughly 150 premium SKUs to the store’s assortment. In a market dominated by online retailers, the decision by Dixons to open the Gaming Bunker is refreshingly well thought out.
It is a great way to create an engaging brand experience and drive awareness into the eSports community. The retailer intends for the product ranges in the trial format to change frequently, whilst the space will host events and product launches for the gaming community – both of which should ensure repeat traffic for the in-store gaming department. Dixons is to be applauded for this innovative concept.
