There are a ridiculous number of awesome games playable at Rezzed this coming weekend, but today we're also happy to reveal the presence of at least one ridiculousgame.
Yes, as you may have guessed from the self-explanatory headline you clicked on to reach these words, Bossa Studios' wilfully peculiar Surgeon Simulator 2013 will be among the games on the show floor, with a twist: you'll be able to try it out for the first time with Oculus Rift and Razer Hydra hardware.
Surgeon Simulator gives you remote control of a pair of surgeon's arms, which players typically wave around haphazardly as they attempt to grip scalpels, needles and bone saws to undertake delicate operations.
Perhaps the extra level of immersion offered by the Oculus Rift virtual reality system and the Razer Hydra motion controller will be handy in reducing the mortality rate for amateur surgeons. Or perhaps they will send it the other way - it wouldn't be terribly surprising.
Either way, the prospect of playing what our reviewer Chris Donlan described as "an arm simulator" (before going on to make a John Wilkes Booth joke that one reader told us was "too soon") with cutting edge control technology should make for a hilarious experience for the player and a spectacle for anyone happening by.
Given the game itself, Bossa Studios probably wouldn't have it any other way.
Oculus and Hydra support will be offered to owners of the game in the near future, incidentally, but Rezzed will be a good opportunity to skip the waiting room.
Rezzed: The PC and Indie Games Show takes place this weekend, Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd June, at the NEC in Birmingham. Tickets are available at Rezzed.com priced £12 for one day and £20 for the weekend. As well as tons of playable games, we also have some amazing developer sessions featuring the likes of Obsidian and Creative Assembly, apacked indie arcade and loads more besides.
One man's vision is that of immersive TV shows, movies and live sports. In fact, David Cole, co-founder of Next3D and an industry veteran who helps content creators and providers produce and deliver 3D, has been using his Rift dev kit to bring TV and film to life sincethe kits started shipping in March. The company is combining its video processing and compression technology with its experience in content production and stereoscopic delivery to offer what it's called Full-Court.
Next3D hopes to leverage its existing relationships with creators and providers to assist them in jumping into the world of live-action VR content. This includes both pre-recorded and live broadcasts. We wanted to see this firsthand, so we jumped at the opportunity to witness the creation of content and experience the results. This trial run of Next3D's stereoscopic, 180-degree field-of-view camera rig, and the post-processing to adapt it to VR, was part of the production of the paranormal investigation show,Anomaly, at Castle Warden in St. Augustine, Fla. Being nearby, we braved the perils of the haunted surroundings to tell you about what we hope is only the beginning of virtual reality content.
Developers have kits from a massively successful Kickstarter campaign, said kit has support from the industry's biggest game engine creators, and the consumer-friendly HD version is already being shown off to press (we loved what we saw at E3 2013 last week). And now the company's got a solid $16 million in the bank backing up its next step: creating a virtual reality headset that's significantly more mainstream than the $300 dev kit currently available. But don't think that alters the young company's promise of virtual reality on the PC platform; quite the contrary, as CEO Brendan Iribe told Engadget, "We're really focused on the PC as the platform to bring this to market right now."
He said that Oculus isn't against bringing its VR headset to consoles, but that PC remains the primary platform. "We're always looking at other platforms -- looking at consoles, we're also looking at Android and the mobile side in a big way -- but right now we really are focused on the PC platform," he said. Sony's Shuhei Yoshida told us last week in an interview that, "We've got a couple of the development kits, and I tried it out and I love it," though he wouldn't outright say if the PlayStation 4 will support the Rift. We're betting "yes."
As for what Oculus is doing in the short-term with the new infusion of cash? In short, it's being used to staff up (the company's still under 50 employees right now, mostly engineers). "We're using the funding to ramp up on hiring more smart people, the best and brightest that we can find," Iribe said. "The dev kit as it is now, that we're shipping, will stay the same, and the software side will just keep getting better." The vast majority of those new employees will be engineers -- one glance at the company's careers pagequickly confirms this claim. Outside of new employees, though, Iribe said little will change in the company's ongoing goal to develop "the very best virtual reality platform we can create."
Oculus VR, maker of the anticipated Oculus Rift VR gaming headset, has secured $16 million in Series A funding.
The round was co-led by Spark Capital and Matrix Partners. Santo Politi, founder and general partner at Spark, and Antonio Rodriguez, serial entrepreneur and general partner at Matrix, have joined the company’s board of directors. Founders Fund as well as Formation 8 also participated in the round.

Oculus plans to use the funds to accelerate the development of its virtual reality hardware, software and services, and ultimately create a virtual reality platform for consumers.
“Oculus began with a single mission: to put players inside the game,” said Palmer Luckey, founder of Oculus VR and inventor of the Oculus Rift.
“This investment allows us to deliver immersive and affordable virtual reality to players everywhere.”

Oculus announced its first round of funding today, wherein the company secured $16 million from investors specifically aimed at putting the Oculus Rift in consumer hands. The nascent virtual reality hardware company has repeatedly said its end goal with the Rift is to make it a consumer product; currently, only folks who backed the Rift on Kickstarter and those willing to spend $300 on a developer kit have access. A handful of games support the Rift, though more and more developers are promising not just support in their games, but entire games built from the ground up with VR in mind. AnHD version of the headset was also introduced at last week's E3 gaming show.
Oculus' new business partners apparently see enough financial potential in the Rift to not only invest heavily, but to also take on board positions -- both Santo Politi of Spark Capital and Antonio Rodriguez of Matrix Partners are now on the Oculus board of directors. "What Palmer, Brendan and the team are building at Oculus so closely matches the Metaverse that we had to be part of it. Working with them to get this platform to market at scale will be enormously exciting," Rodriguez said of today's news.
The company launched last year with a Kickstarter campaign targeting $250,000 -- the project eventually raised just shy of $2.5 million, and now sells its Rift dev kit outside of the Kickstarter campaign.

The arrival of virtual reality headset Oculus Rift on consoles is a step closer.

The arrival of virtual reality headset Oculus Rift on consoles is a step closer.
Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida toldEngadget that Sony has “got a couple of the development kits” and that “I tried it out and I love it”.
And while there’s no active discussions occurring just yet (Yoshida said that PS4 does not currently support the tech, although there was a tantalising “no comment” regarding possible future support) Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe has understandably reacted with excitement to the idea.
"Certainly, we would love it to be compatible with consoles," he told Digital Spy. "We're big believers in consoles, we love what Sony is doing and what Microsoft is doing.
"There's no reason technically that it couldn't work on consoles, especially next-gen consoles; they have the CPU, GPU computing now to run really high quality content in HD at 60 frames per second. So there's no reason technically it couldn't happen, it's just whether Sony thinks it's a good idea.
"We've shown demos and spoken to those guys, but we really haven't taken the conversation any further than just showing them the demo and saying, 'We'd love it to be on your console. Let us know if you agree any time, we're happy to be there!'"
"I think if and when that did happen, that would help spur a lot more development, faster development, from bigger companies into it. Now they'll look at it like it's this real consumer opportunity. It's hard to justify a ten or twenty million budget game today for a VR device that has shipped 10,000 developer kits without any confirmation on when the consumer product is going to ship.
"Some are even wanting to make that leap of faith with us – which is exciting – we're expecting all of that would accelerate if a console announced compatibility."
The developments come as Oculus this week unveiled a new prototype device running at 1080p.
“Raising the resolution for the consumer Rift has always been one of the highest priorities,” the company stated. “The dev kit is an incredible device that demonstrates the potential for VR. The prototype’s 1080p display increases the number of visible pixels by more than 2x, greatly reducing the screen-door effect seen in the development kit. HD is one of the many features and improvements we have in development for the consumer version of the Rift.”
After all, supplemental information is great and all, but how to access it while gaming? Nyko thinks it's got a solution in the form of the Smart Clip. At first glance, the device looks a fair bit like those bluetooth gaming controls we've already seen en masse. Instead, the add-on clips your phone to your controller so you can, say, check out a map via Smart Glass or the PlayStation App without fumbling for your phone.
We played around with the clip a bit, and while if folds in quite nicely, the prototype still has a ways to go, a gentle jostling knocked the Nyko rep's phone right out. Sorry about that. The rear of the arm has an adjustable device, so you can attach all manner of handsets to your controller. There are also two knobs on the bottom to tighten the arm in place -- nice, as it was a little bit wobbly when we first picked it up. Naturally, Nyko plans to have all the kinks worked out when it launches the Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions later this year for $14.99.
The company's new Sound Blaster EVO line of Bluetooth headsets may do the trick. Both the EVO Zx (40mm drivers) and EVO ZxR (50mm drivers) have the same Sound Blaster Axxprocessing as the company's sound cards, which lets them clean up low-grade audio and fine-tune effects through desktop and mobile apps. They'll also pair quickly with NFC-based devices, and players can still switch to a headphone jack or USB port when only wired sound will do. Creative hasn't dished out US launch details, but it expects to ship the EVO Zx to the UK in July for £200 ($313), followed by the EVO ZxR in August for £250 ($392). Those willing to live Axx-free can also buy the EVO Wireless and EVO in July at respective prices of £150 ($235) and £100 ($157).
When we asked whether the company's planning on offering support in the future, he only offered a "No comment" with a big smile. Granted, they're not as slick as some of the higher end products the audio company has shown off in the past, but as far as gaming-centric devices go, they're not too shabby. According to the company, Microsoft approached it specifically to create peripherals for the Xbox, leading Polk to give the world the 133t Gaming Headphones and N1 Surroundbar.
The 133ts eschew the standard external gaming mic for a little nub that juts out from one ear. To mute it, you just click it back up inside the cup. The headphones also feature a mixer that plugs directly into the controller to help eliminate cords and lets you adjust sound settings on the fly. The Surroundbar, meanwhile, was designed specifically with the Xbox in mind, featuring four modes: Racer, FPS, Music and Cinema, so you can switch between gaming and standard media consumption. The Soundbar is set for a fall release, with the 133t coming some time in Q4. More info in a press release after the break.
Oculus has revealed a new prototype for its virtual reality headset featuring 1080p HD resolution support.
The start-up said the prototype dev kit of the Oculus Rift demonstrated the full potential for high-definition VR.

The tech more than doubles the number of visible pixels through the headset, which the company said greatly reduced the “screen-door effect” seen in the normal development kit. The prototype also improved brightness, contrast and colour.
Despite supporting 1080p HD however, Oculus noted that the tech is not a product, and this is not necessarily the display that will be used in the final consumer release, but just a taste of what's to come.
“The 1080p prototype isn't a product - this isn't necessarily the display (or even the resolution) that we'll use for the consumer version - it's simply a taste of what's coming,” read a statement on the Oculus blog.
As such, Nyko's taken to this year's E3 to announce a few products meant to be used alongside Microsoft and Sony's recently announced entertainment boxes -- there's a Smart Clip, a Charge Base and a Headset Adaptor (Xbox One-only). Meanwhile, Nyko also took the time to unveil a little something for the NVIDIA Shield, including a dock that doubles as a charging station, a couple of sleek traveling cases and a kit which provides power to the unorthodox handheld while on the go or at home. Nyko didn't dive into much of the availability (or pricing) specifics, but the trend seems to be that the add-ons will be available later this year.
The developer edition has been in the hands of devs for a couple months now, and while Palmer Luckey and Nate Mitchell have certainly received rave reviews of the headset from many, they've also heard lots of feedback about ways to improve it. The number one request from users and devs? A higher-resolution screen than the 1,280 x 800 panel in the dev device. Well, after months of research and tinkering to find the right hardware combination, team Oculus is finally ready to show off a Rift with a 1,080 x 1920 display, and we got to demo the thing.
Before heading into the land of 1080p, we got to explore a demo built with Unreal Engine 4 in the existing dev headset. After looking around a snowy mountain stronghold inhabited by a fire lord in low res, we switched to the exact same demo running at 60 fps on the HD prototype device -- and the difference was immediately apparent. Surface textures could be seen in much higher fidelity, colors were brighter and less muddied and the general detail of the entire environment was greatly improved.
A strong bass and crystal clear sound will help you determine where you can expect the next encounter with your enemy. A volume regulator on the cord enables you to quickly adjust the sound in the headset and mute the microphone. The move comes as part of an "Integrated Partners Program," which also adds support from a variety of other middleware companies (Autodesk, IDV, and NVIDIA to name just a few). Licensees have access to the entire list of middleware software, and can implement functionality in their UE4-powered projects starting today. Epic Games VP Mark Rein told us at GDC 2013 that Unreal Engine 4 support for Oculus Rift was in the works, but we didn't think it'd arrive this soon!
