The Complete Guide to Whats Needed for Homebrew on Each Console.

Introduction

Im sure many of you want to know whats needed for homebrew on each console, this guide will tell you and even provide links where applicable to get a hold of such items.

This guide assumes you already have a PC/Laptop.

The guide details the easiest way to get homebrew working on each console, although there are other methods for those new to Homebrew these are the best methods to use.

What is Homebrew ?

Homebrew is a term applied to video games, applications and demos that are produced by consumers on proprietary game platforms; in other words, game platforms that are not typically user-programmable, or use proprietary hardware for storage. Some, however, also refer to all non-commercial, "home-developed" games for open architectures as homebrew games etc, though these typically go under more frequently used labels, such as freeware.

Consoles we are covering - Updated with Nintendo Wii

This guide will cover all the following consoles.

Dreamcast
Game Boy Advance
Gamecube
Gizmondo
GP2X
GP32
Nintendo DS
Nintendo Wii
Nokia N-Gage
Playstation 2
Playstation Portable
Sega Saturn
Tapwave Zodiac
Xbox

Heres the Guide Console by Console

Nintendo Wii

Whats needed for the Nintendo Wii.

The Nintendo Wii hasnt been cracked for homebrew at this time but Gamecube Homebrew is fully usuable on the Nintendo Wii and can be accessed by a method called the SD Load Method. Heres whats needed for Gamecube Homebrew on the Nintendo Wii.

Playstation Portable

Whats needed for the PSP.

The ideal firmware for homebrew on the PSP is V1.5 as it enables you to play all homebrew and any that use kernal mode which means faster speeds on emulators etc. PSP Consoles up to v2.71 can be used and can be downgraded to v1.5 or can use Eloader to enjoy homebrew., consoles that are TA-082 versions cant be downgraded.

Heres what you need:

PSP Console - The console linked is a 2.5 firmware PSP (and not TA-082) so it can be downgraded or you can use Eloader to play homebrew on it.

Memory Stick PRO Duo - Any size from 32mb to 4GB can be used, our advice buy as big as you can afford.

USB Transfer/Recharge Cable - Needed to transfer files to memory card on PSP.

Nintendo DS/DS Lite

Whats needed for the Nintendo DS/DS Lite.

The Nintendo DS/DS homebrew scene is evolving all the time but for now the best way to get homebrew on the DS is to have the console, a boot cart that goes into the DS cart slot and the flash cart that goes into the GBA cart slot.

UPDATE

You can now buy a Slot 1 DS Flash Cartridge called the DS Xtreme which looks like a normal DS Game and has masses of space on the card. Drag and drop homebrew files onto the card. Easiest way to run DS Homebrew, doesnt support GBA homebrew though.

Heres what you need:

Nintendo DS or DS Lite - Without the console youll get nowhere.

Passcard - The boot cartridge that goes into the DS Slot.

Supercard / Supercard Lite - This is the Flashcart, goes in your GBA Slot, the lite version only fits in the DS Lite.

SD Card / Micro SD Card - Depending on the flashcart you buy youll need a memory card for it, the micro sd card works with the lite version and SD Card with the normal flash cart. There are also Mini SD versions of the flash cart and for that youll need a Mini SD memcard.

Card Reader - Needed for putting files onto your memory card.

Gameboy Advance/GBA SP/ GB Micro

With the GBA or any variant you need the console and a flashcart and way to stick files on the cart, very simple and yet very rewarding.

Gameboy Advance or GBA SP or GB Micro - firstly you need a console, if you want the best homebrew experiance then the GBASP will give that.

GBA Flash Cart - Inserted into the cartridge slot this enables you to play homebrew and more on the GBA.

Linker Cable - USB cable needed to connect to GBA with flash cart inserted to transfer files over.

Dreamcast

Whats needed for the Dreamcast

The Dreamcast is a rare one amongst consoles and thats because it doesnt need to have a modchip fitted to run homebrew and it has the biggest collection of homebrew on any console anywhere. Newer Dreamcasts had a change that stopped the console reading CDRs, so if you buy a second hand one be on the lookout for that.

Treamcast/ Portable Dreamcast - To be sure of getting a Dreamcast that runs homebrew and new then this is the perfect option, it also has a screen for those who want to play homebrew anywhere they can access power.

You will also need a CD Writer on your PC to make the homebrew discs for this console.
