    Well, it has been four years (to the day) since the last release of CrabEmu. That seemed like a good enough reason for a new release, so that's just what I did.

    There are plenty of new features and bugfixes in this release (far too many to list in a reasonably-sized news post), so here's the highlights of what has been improved:
    • Added support for emulating the ColecoVision and the NES (mappers 0 and 1 only)
    • Fixed various bugs in the Z80 core
    • Fixed priority on sprites in TMS9918 video modes
    • Added support for PAR cheats for SMS games
    • Added support for roms in zip files, as well as gzip and bzip2 compressed roms
    • Added support for a few odd mappers in SMS games released in Taiwan and Korea
    • Added support for browsing directories in the Dreamcast GUI
    • Added support for libkosext2fs (so you can put roms and such on an ext2 formatted SD card)


    CrabEmu 0.2.0 is available for download in plain files and source code (in addition to the other related downloads). ...

    EDGE Card DS Slot-1 MicroSD/MicroSDHC

    DS homebrew and development has always been one of those things that has interested me greatly. However, I'm one of those people that always takes on more than I can handle. It should hardly come as a surprise to many of you that my interest in DS homebrew kinda fell on the back burner to the Dreamcast. At one point in time, my interest was high enough in DS homebrew that I actually bought a flashcart and all for the purpose. My card of choice (there really wasn't much of a choice back then) was a SuperCard SD (Slot 2) and an original PassMe. That was quite a few years ago, so when I was given the opportunity to review a much newer DS flashcart, I jumped all over the opportunity. So, now that you know what kind of perspective this review is coming from, I guess it would be a good time to get it started, eh?

    The flashcart in question for this review is the EDGE Card. here's a small tidbit from the manufacturer on what EDGE is exactly (and a picture of its rather unique packaging):

    EDGE is a multi functional media adapter for NDS. It accepts MicroSD and MicroSDHC cards. EDGE allows use of Homebrew DS applications, multimedia (via Moonshell) and commercial NDS applications via the SD interface. EDGE is easy to use, just load the EDGE OS (download from support section) onto the MicroSD together with your favourite applications, plug into EDGE then insert the EDGE cartridge into the DS and you're ready to go!

    Features of EDGE (as given by the manufacturer):

    • Plays Commercial NDS ROM
    • Plays Homebrew NDS ROMS

    First Impressions/Setup of EDGE:
    The EDGE card comes in a rather interesting packaging, shaped like a triangle. The package comes with the EDGE card itself, as well as a MicroSD/MicroSDHC reader. There are no discs of any sort included with the card itself. The packaging has instructions on the back for how to get set up with the card. This simply involves going to the EDGE website, and downloading the latest EDGE OS and extracting it to the root of your MicroSD card. Any other DS programs you wish to use go anywhere on the MicroSD card that you wish to put them. Also, while at the EDGE website, you probably will want to download their EDGE version of Moonshell. The Moonshell RAR file contains a directory named moonshl that should be copied to the root of your MicroSD card. The moonshl directory will not show up in the EDGE file browser, so don't dump any DS applications there if you want to run them from the EDGE OS. Upon doing this, Moonshell is accessible from the EDGE OS by choosing the Media option.

    Overall Impressions:
    I have to say that flashcarts for the DS have certainly come a long way since their humble beginnings. The EDGE card seems to be a very solid piece of kit, so to speak. It had no trouble with all the homebrew that I threw at it. It automatically did DLDI patching, and the interface is skinable. I also like the fact that you can boot any old Slot-2 devices (like my old SuperCard SD) from within the EDGE OS (the option is in a bit of an odd place though, in the Settings menu). The OS has a bunch of different languages that it supports (English, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish and Portuguese, just to name some of them), so even if English isn't your first language, you'll probably find some language you're comfortable with to set it to. I'd recommend the EDGE card to anyone that is looking for a new flashcart for their DS. It does exactly what it needs to do, and the packaging is kinda cool too.

    Overall rating: 4.5 / 5

    The odd placement of the option booting a Slot-2 device is probably the only thing keeping me from giving this a 5/5.

    To celebrate the 11th anniversary of the Dreamcast's release in the US, the 1 year anniversary of the public unveiling of Sylverant, as well as r200 of its code, I have opened the Sylverant Phantasy Star Online Server up to the general public. For the time being, this only applies to the Dreamcast versions of PSO (US/EU v1 and EU v2), however support for the other versions that the server software supports will be coming soon.

    Its been an interesting ride this past year working on Sylverant, one filled with many bumps along the way. Its all been pretty fun though. I hope that other people will help contribute to the project (by testing for and reporting any bugs) now that I have opened the server up to the public to play on. If you still have PSO, and you have a way to connect to a private server with it, I hope you'll give my server a try.

    Two more class-action lawsuits were brought against Sony Computer Entertainment over the removal of Other OS from the Playstation 3. Both of the new lawsuits, much like the earlier lawsuit, were filed in the United States District Court for the northern district of California.

    The first of the two lawsuits, filed on April 30, 2010 on behalf of Jason Baker, Sean Bosquett, Frank Bachman, Paul Graham, and Paul VanNatta carries the following allegations against Sony: Breach of Contract, Breach of the Covenant of Good Faith and Fair Dealing, violation of California's Unfair Competition Law, as well as violation of California's Consumers Legal Remedies Act (the two California laws are relevant because SCEA's headquarters are within the Northern District of California). This suit asks for the award of damages to all members of the class (PS3 purchasers from 2006 through March 27, 2010, excluding those associated directly with Sony), restitution of moneys paid as well as disgorgement of all profits unjustly retained by Sony, injunctive relief, attorney's fees, and any other further relief deemed appropriate by the court. The Plaintiffs in this case have demanded a Jury Trial.

    The second case, filed on May 5th, 2010 on behalf of Todd Densmore and Antal Herz alleges the following: Breach of Contract, Breach of the Implied Covenant of Good Faith and Fair Dealing, Trespass to Chattels, Unjust Enrichment, violation of California's Consumers Legal Remedies Act, violation of the Federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, violation of California's False Advertising Law and violation of California's Unfair Competition Law. This lawsuit asks for an order awarding injunctive and declaratory relief, restitution and/or disgorgement, damages with interest at the maximum rate allowable by law, attorney's fees, and any other relief deemed appropriate by the court. Once again, the Plaintiffs in this suit have demanded a trial by jury.

    Both of these suits are interesting in the fact that they allege that Sony committed fraud in the removal of Other OS, which could imply treble damages that are much more than any actual damages incurred. It could be interesting to see how Sony deals with three lawsuits all alleging different misconduct on the part of Sony in regard to the removal of Other OS, and if any of these will be settled out of court (as seems to be the case with the majority of class action lawsuits).

    Personally, I'd be happy if they were to just reinstate the feature and sign an affidavit to never attempt to remove it again.

    Someone has finally filed a class-action lawsuit against Sony for the removal of Other OS. I hope that this forces Sony to restore the functionality or pay those affected enough to restore the functionality (which would essentially mean giving each Other OS user a refund that would allow them to purchase another PS3 so that they can continue to use Other OS on the one that they have). I truly believe that Sony was in the wrong here, and hope that justice will prevail. Unfortunately, I know that Class Action lawsuits rarely get full and just compensation for those affected...

    A Californian Playstation 3 user has filed the first class action lawsuit against Sony over removal of the 'Install Other OS' function from the Playstation 3. The action seeks to redress Sony's 'intentional disablement of the valuable functionalities originally advertised as available with the Sony Playstation 3 video game console.' The suit claims that the disablement breaches the sales contract between Sony and its customers and constitutes 'an unfair and deceptive business practice perpetrated on millions of unsuspecting customers.'

    Even though the day is almost over, and its not exactly what I was planning for the occasion of 9/9/09, I'd like to announce the Sylverant PSO Server Project.

    Basically, Sylverant is an open-source Phantasy Star Online server written for Unix-like operating systems (Linux and Mac OS X are where it has been tested so far). My original plan was to have a fully-functional server running today, however a rather nasty bug exists when running the server under Linux, and the machine I'm running the server on runs Linux (thanks to GrizzlyAdams for use of the machine); so no running server today, sorry.

    I've been sitting on this release a bit longer than I would've liked to, so I decided it would be a good time to just release it. This new release of CrabEmu adds a Qt "port" (and support for Linux) along with many other changes to the emulation. Here's a high-level overview of what exactly has changed in CrabEmu 0.1.9 (in relation to the Dreamcast port, and general stuff):

    • Fix a lot of cycle counting issues in CrabZ80.
    • Added support for the SMS VDP's H-Counter.
    • Added support for utilizing a BIOS ROM with SMS and Game Gear emulation (also, added a BIOS replacement).
    • Added support for the IO Control and Memory Control registers on the SMS.

    I have just released Dream Photo Manager 1.0.0, a program that can be used to manage the images on a Dreameye camera. This coincides with the release of the new KallistiOS Dreameye driver in KOS SVN r626. As for what Dream Photo Manager does (other than having the corniest name I could possibly think of), it allows you to browse and delete images from the Dreameye. Since its use is confined to the Dreameye, it is pretty pointless if you do not have one.

    The controls are dead easy (and there's no GUI at the moment): Left and Right on the dpad cycle through images, and Y deletes them. It really can't get all that much more simple.

    Its the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, and what is the perfect excuse for not going out shopping? A new Yabause release, of course. The new version has a few nice improvements to check out. Here's a summary of what's changed:


    vdp2:
    - Fixed a bug in software renderer with rotating backgrounds.
    opengl video core:
    - Added gouraud shading and mesh processing. This is not enabled by default.
    software video core:
    - Fixed user clipping.
    gtk port:
    - Added mouse support.
    - Configuration dialog now displays key names instead of values. Also made it so each different configuration is saved. This broke compatibility with old .ini files.
    windows port:
    - Support for spaces in filenames when using CLI.
    - Added mouse support.
    - Added cheat search.
    general:
    - Added mouse emulation.
    - Added de, es, it, pt-br and sv translations
    - Support for "out of src" build.
    - Fixed compilation for non supported platforms. For instance this should fix compilation on dragonfly bsd. Fixed compilation on GNU/Hurd too.
