Today, Nintendo sent out a Wii message notifying Wii users of a new firmware update. It seems that it's for the upcoming WiiWare titles coming out this May. Here's the letter Nintendo sent out:

    Dear Nintendo Customer,

An update to your Wii Shop Channel is now available. This update is needed in order to access WiiWare games launching later this spring.

To receive this free update, please press the "Update" button located on the lower-right side of the screen or go to "Wii Settings" and select "Wii System Update" to begin.

For those who have already done the update on or after March 20th, you will not need to update again.

Thank you for updating your Wii console!

    ~Nintendo~

I can confirm that this does not affect the recent Twilight Hack exploit, and you can still launch homebrew. Also, the Wii is still at version 3.2x. ...

Bushing, Segher, and tmbinc of Team Twiizers released a new version of the Twilight Hack! The Twilight Hack is a modified save game for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Alpha 2 allows you to load ELF homebrew off of a Gamecube SD card adapter, such as the SD Gecko. You can't use the Wii's internal SD slot at this time, but they're probably working on it.

    Installation
Extract the zip archive into any folder.
Backup your old Zelda save if you want to, by copying data.bin out of *SD Card*/private/wii/title/RZDP or *SD Card*/private/wii/title/RZDE and into another folder.
If you have a PAL Zelda game (identified by the code "RVL-RZDP-0A-0 JPN" around the inside on the shiny side of the disc), copy the file rzdp.bin (from the zip archive you extracted) into *SD Card*/private/wii/title/RZDP/data.bin.
If you have an NTSC later revision Zelda game (identified by the code "RVL-RZDE-0A-2 USA" around the inside on the shiny side of the disc), copy the file rzde2.bin (from the zip archive you extracted) into *SD Card*/private/wii/title/RZDE/data.bin.
If you have any other NTSC revision Zelda game (usually identified by any other code involving the letters "RZDE" around the inside on the shiny side of the disc), copy the file rzde.bin (from the zip archive you extracted) into *SD Card*/private/wii/title/RZDE/data.bin.
Now, put the SD card and Zelda into your Wii and turn it on. Go into Wii Options --> Data Management --> Save Data --> Wii. Find your Zelda save, click on it, and click "Erase", and click Yes. Now, go into SD card, and select the "Twilight Hack" save (the icon says "Wiibrew Loader"). Click copy, and yes. Now, go back out of that menu and start the game. Select the first save file (called Twilight Hack), complete the brightness setting, and talk to the man in front of you. What will later be the ELF loader will load.

If you are a PAL user and are experiencing a line of text lost off the bottom, try changing your TV type under Wii options --> Wii settings --> screen to 576i (50hz). Please could PAL users add a post to the right section to say whether they had this problem or not with non-576i settings, as I would like to know if everyone has this problem or if it's just my TV.
    Problems
If you have a USBGecko, try unplugging it from the Wii before running the exploit. There's a bug in the USBGecko code used in the exploit that will make the game hang if you have a USBGecko plugged in to the wii, but not connected to any program on your computer.

This exploit does not work with every version of Zelda:TP. Easy way to check your version is to compare the text string which is on the inner cycle of the data surface with the ones below.

    RVL-RZDP-0A-0 JPN - working
Some minor problems reported e.g. Some greeny lines around the top area of the screen that appear with the penguin and if the TV type is set to 480i/p (60Hz or EDTV mode) the bottom is cut off

    RVL-RZDE-0A-0 JPN - working
    RVL-RZDE-0A-0 USA - working
    RVL-RZDE-0A-2 USA - working
RVL-RZDJ-0A-0 JPN - not supported yet

Apparently, the guys at the 24th Annual Chaos Communication Congress have discovered a way to run native Wii homebrew code (not GameCube code)! Check out a video of it here!

Nintendo-Scene is reporting that one of their users has who is currently attending the 24th Annual Chaos Communication Congress gathering has reported that a Nintendo Wii has been showcased running homebrew in Wii mode. Currently, all homebrew is run under GC mode so you're limited to not taking full advantage of the consoles extras such as the Wiimote, SD Card slot and Wifi.

"The guys over at 24C3 just demoed a Wii hack that is set to provide native wii homebrew in the near future (not running in GC mode, and with full access to all the Wii hardware!)

They were able to find encryption and decryption keys by doing full memory dumps at runtime over a custom serial interface.

Using these keys, they were able to create a Wii ‘game’ that ran their own code (their demo happened to show live sensor/Wiimote information, amongst a few other things).
    "

This is a HUGE discovery, and opens up a whole window of possibilities! ...

Yesterday, Nintendo sent out a Wii message notifying all Wii owners of updates for the Wii Shop Channel and the Photo Channel.

    Dear Nintendo Consumer,

We are pleased to announce that the following two new features have been added to the Wii console: (1) Wii Gifting in the Wii Shop Channel and (2) an update to the Photo Channel.

The Wii Gifting feature allows you to buy games for your friends and family and to gift such games to them right from your Wii Shop Channel. To learn how to use this new feature, go to http://nintendo.com/wii/channels.

In addition to the Wii Gifting feature, the Photo Channel has been updated to allow you to: (1) paste your favorite picture on the Photo Channel icon displayed on the Wii Menu and (2) play AAC-format music files while viewing slide shows.

    [How to use this.]
The new Photo Channel can be downloaded from the WiiWare section of the Wii Shop Channel at no cost. Please note that if the Photo Channel you are currently using is the "Photo Channel 1.1" version, you will not need to download this new version.

To verify whether or not you are currently using Photo Channel 1.1, just point your Wii Remote on the Photo Channel icon on the Wii Menu screen. The screen will display "Photo Channel 1.1" if that is the version you are using.

In order to download the updated Photo Channel, you'll first need to update your Wii Shop Channel. Press the "Update" button located on the lower-right side of the screen to start the update.

    ~Nintendo~

If you don't feel like buying anything right now, and you would like to try out the Gifting feature, you can send the Photo Channel update to a friend! The gift letters are pretty nice!
One small thing to note, after the update, the Wii Shop Channel now has a stylish new animation when you click on it! ...

The Rare Witch Project, a website that has been dedicated to hacking Nintendo 64 games made by developer Rareware, has been completely redesigned with a new look and feel! Though the site's primary focus will still be N64 hacking, it plans to expand and attract a bigger fan-base. Here's what the site's founder, Ice Mario, had to say:

We are proud to give you The Rare Witch Project V2.

    What's all this?
In the past five months we've had our fair share of late nights, full of blood, sweat and tears. We've worked hard to bring you this brand new revision of The Rare Witch project because we are very passionate about it's future, and continued success. It was important in the initial stages to design the site around our requirements, rather than make do with what we had.

    Why have we done it?
The Rare Witch Project has followed a similar format from the beginning of its creation. Originally a website dedicated to hacking Rare games on the N64. Goldeneye and the Banjo series and have always been at the forefront of the Rare Witch Project, codes and content produced largely for these specific games, which in turn attracted a targeted fan-base to the forums. In the past few years the community side of the website has become more prominent as articles and updates on the main website have gradually become more sporadic. The Rare Witch Project is heading a new direction, a new design was needed to reflect those changes.

The Rare Witch Project should be the most prominent resource for all rare related content; this becomes increasingly important with Banjo Threeies onset. We are aiming to attract a broader user base, fans of all Rare games, this is reflected in the new forums you'll see

    What's New?
Well, everything is new with exception to the content, but we'll soon sort that out I could go on about the website, but it's probably best if you take a look around. The way the old site worked was quite counter-intuitive, and it was time to take a fresh approach. Content needs to be easily accessible, whether it be recent content on the main page, or old content, which can be quickly found by searching the archive. The website has been given a complete overhaul; from design, layout to functionality.

The forums have been upgraded to the latest Vbulletin version, there a quite a few new features, some will be integrated at a later date.

    The Arcade!!
One of the best "new things" in my opinion. We already have several fantastic titles available, and new ones are being released each Wednesday! Check out the the guide for more info.

A massive thanks to Grey for testing out and picking all the games. Grey will be running the arcade since he has the most experience in this field, so direct your questions his way.

In addition to all of these newly implemented features, we have some forum updates planned. Each month we'll reveal a new feature - some big and some small.

We have quite a few new forums, as mentioned before we are aiming to attract fans of all rare games. We will be monitoring the popularity of these forums to determine which ones will stay and which will go.

    Why Beta?
Well we could keep working on this for a few more months and probably not be satisfied, we expect a few problems here and there. Many ideas have been put into practice and we won't know what will work out until we give it a try. The website framework has been written from scratch to suit our needs, the development is still ongoing. We'll be using this beta period to monitor usage, in an effort to improve how the system works. We'll also be using this opportunity to gather information about what type of content our users are most interested in.

    So what's next?
This is an exciting time for us all and we have a lot more coming up next year. What you see now is only phase one of the development. We have some big plans for the RWP. For now the monthly updates and arcade releases will keep you busy
