RetroArch v1.7.6 is released. RetroArch is a multi-system emulator for Linux, Windows, Mac OS X and *BSD. It is formerly known as SSNES. Its design and background is quite different than most other emulators as RetroArch does not implement an emulation core itself. RetroArch talks to libretro, a generic emulator core API. This means that RetroArch is core agnostic, and it does not care which emulator core is running.

Currently there are libretro implementations for systems such as SNES, NES, GBA, GB/GBC, Genesis, and even arcade games (Final Burn Alpha).

libretro isn't only usable for emulators. A preliminary port of an open source reimplementation of Cave Story has been ported to libretro as well.

RetroArch believes in modularity. The application itself is a command-line driven application suitable for HTPC and/or headless use. There also exists a GUI frontend for RetroArch, supporting every single config option available in RetroArch.

Today, Valve has revealed the details surrounding its upcoming venture into VR hardware, the Valve Index.
The Index is planned for launch later this year with initial, limited availability in the US and the EU, though Valve intends to increase shipments later based on demand. Pre-orders will open in May.
The full kit, which includes a base station, two Index controllers, and the headset itself, will cost $999. Individual pieces are compatible with HTC Vive headsets, controllers, and base stations. The headset alone will cost $499, the controllers alone are $279, and those who already own a base station can purchase the headset and controllers together for $749.
At a reveal event last week, Valve representatives said the Index's high cost (it's one of the most expensive headsets on the market) is due to the philosophy behind its development The Index is intended both as a high-fidelity, high-end headset for experienced VR users, and to remove hardware barriers for developers working in VR and increase the library of content available, rather than focusing on an affordable or low-barrier piece of equipment for users.
In terms of visual fidelity, the Valve index is a 120 Hz headset that's compatible both with 90 Hz and 144 Hz, though at the moment 144 Hz experiences are still experimental. The headset features dual 1440 by 1600 LCD panels, 0.330ms of persistence, and 50% visual fill factor - a feature that Valve claims will all but eliminate screen door effect - an improvement GamesIndustry.biz observed at the reveal event. And aside from just looking sharper, one major improvement brought by the Valve Index is text legibility - a perk also observable in demos at the reveal.

QEMU v4.0.0-rc3 is released. QEMU is a generic and open source machine emulator and virtualizer. When used as a machine emulator, QEMU can run OSes and programs made for one machine (e.g. an ARM board) on a different machine (e.g. your own PC). By using dynamic translation, it achieves very good performances. When used as a virtualizer, QEMU achieves near native performances by executing the guest code directly on the host CPU. A host driver called the QEMU accelerator (also known as KQEMU) is needed in this case. The virtualizer mode requires that both the host and guest machine use x86 compatible processors.

DOSBox-X v0.82.13 is released. DOSBox-x is a branch of DOSBox. DOSBox emulates an Intel x86 PC, complete with sound, graphics, mouse, joystick, modem, etc., necessary for running many old MS-DOS games that simply cannot be run on modern PCs and operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista, Linux and FreeBSD.

    DOSBox-X Changelog:
Mac OS X SDL2 builds now use the native OS X menu
system instead of the "SDL drawn" menus.
Mac OS X SDL1 builds now default to the OpenGL
output (if compiled with OpenGL support). Under
recent versions of OS X, OpenGL output gives
better performance than surface (CGBitmap) based
    display.
SDL2 builds now have working XBRZ scaler support.
Mac OS X SDL2 builds updated to completely ignore
touch events, because SDL2 sees the touchpad on
Macbooks as a touchscreen. Prior to this fix, the
DOSBox-X UI was unusable due to mixed input events
from both the touchpad and the mouse input from the
    touchpad.
SDL1 High DPI support for Mac OS X users with Retina
    displays.
SDL1 fix for display problems (blank windows) on Mac
    OS X 10.14.x (Mojave).
Windows builds (compiled with VS2017) now have working
    MT32 (Munt) emulation.
    Adjusting CPU cycles with F12 + - / F12 + + (Increment
and Decrement Cycles shortcuts) now updates cpu cycles
property. This fixes a problem where adjusting the cycle
count then changing the CPU core caused DOSBox-X to reset
the cycle count back to the original value.
Linux/X11 support fixed not to assume XRandR extensions
are present, but to instead ask the X11 server first.
Simple scaler rendering has altered the RENDER start line
state so that detection of a changed line triggers a block
of rendering without compare within a limited count before
checking again. This means a reduced CPU load with scalers
because it only detects frame changes every line before
changes detected, and then on average every 12th line
when running the scaler code. Hopefully this helps the
Raspberry Pi keep up with DOS gaming better.
Simple scalers now offer compile-time (not run-time)
option to omit per-pixel compare in scaler and process
the entire scanline instead as a performance adjustment
    for slower and embedded systems.
Video debug menu added. First item is one that blanks the
    display to test screen updating.
Simple scalers (normal 2x-5x and SAI) revised to process
changes and scaler rendering in larger blocks for possible
    performance improvement.
Simple scalers fixed to properly compare all pixels to
detect changes properly, instead of only the first 4-8
    pixels.
EGA/VGA text rendering combined to reduce code copypasta
    and reduce bugs.
VGA 16-color planar modes now obey CRTC byte/word/dword
    bits.
