    A few months ago, a contact reached out to me with an irresistible offer. I would be given the opportunity to experiment with an insanely rare, prototype development kit PlayStation Vita. The only ask from my source is that I somehow dump the boot code. I’ve spent the last seven years hacking every last bit of the Vita from exploiting the kernel to extracting hardware keys with AES fault injections. In that long journey, I’ve gotten intimate with every model and revision of the Vita so it seems inevitable that I would find myself with the very first prototype. The DEM-3000L is actually more rare than the DEM-3000H that recently made headlines having been sold for $20,000. Although I cannot confirm this independently, my source claims that the DEM-3000H units were distributed to early game developers while the DEM-3000L was used internally at Sony to develop the system firmware. The history of this particular DEM-3000L was that two of these were originally found side by side at a Chinese landfill. They had extensive water damage (I was told they were “at the bottom of a lake”) and was carefully repaired. One of the two (the one with the broken display) eventually made it to me.

    If you want to learn more about hardware glitching, the ChipWhisperer Wiki is a great place to start. If you get a ChipWhisperer Lite hardware, you can follow the tutorials there to learn more. Our work was all done on a ChipWhisperer Lite along with some molecule mods that enables features such as eMMC packet triggering, multiple glitch units, edge triggering with extra GPIO inputs, extra clock divider options, and more. You can also find some Vita-specific scripts for the ChipWhisperer for glitching and for DFA. Finally, if you want to learn more about the Vita, the HENkaku wiki is the place to go.
    The DEM prototype glitching summarized in this article was done live on Twitch over exactly two weeks. If you want to see the whole process from inception to completion, they are all recorded in vods. Be warned though, more time was wasted going down wrong paths and making mistakes than actual progress–but that is how real hacking works. Thanks to everyone who tuned in and provided help and moral support, and to xyz for providing the exploit to trigger the reset handshake.

    The PlayStation Vita has a pretty good amount of homebrew and even some original homebrew games that are exclusive to the system created by numerous Indie developers.
    Among these, we find Pingo by Grzybojad which is a puzzle game with the goal of painting a whole map with the least amount of steps as possible. While this may sound easy, it can get pretty challenging since many levels are designed in a clever ways that force you to think about your next move. Other than being a fun way to pass some time, it also has a high degree of polish and great artwork which was done by Jumbocube.
    Pingo 2.0 comes with a whole new world and even more polish

    Now, it has been updated to version 2.0 and this brings along:

    • A new world that include 30 levels. These levels come with 3 new gameplay mechanics and a different colour scheme
    • Support for custom levels which can be created by robDev’s pingo-edit
    • Navigation with the touchscreen which kinda gives it Cut The Rope-esque vibes in the menus
    • The Options menu now works;
      • This menu can be used to set the volume, enable/disable touch controls and view your stats

    • Improved visuals, 4 new music tracks, an easter egg and a credits scene after you beat all the levels

    To get Pingo 2.0 on your Vita (which you definitely should do), simply open VHBB and install it since it’s available on VitaDB. Alternatively, you can grab the VPK from this link (report bugs in the Issues tab) and install it via VitaShell. You may also donate to him via Patreon. Unfortunately, there’s no Android/iOS port since I personally think that it would make a great mobile game especially with the updated visuals in this version!

    Bad news for the whole PS Vita scene. Sony has just stealthily dropped a new system update for the PS Vita: version 3.71. No official changelog is available at the moment, as Sony's website still lists 3.70 as the latest one, but it was clear since the beginning that the new firmware was aimed towards fixing exploits and security flaws as no new features were added. However, when scene member and console hacker TheFloW took an in-depth look at it, he found out that every single bug used by his Trinity exploit chain had been patched, making it impossible to run or port it over to the new system software.

    Given the circumstances, it should go without saying that users interested in running any kind of homebrew on their PS Vita should avoid updating at all costs. If you don't, you will have to wait until a completely new exploit comes out for 3.71 - if that ever happens. TheFloW recommends anyone running Trinity to downgrade to firmware 3.68 or lower, otherwise, you may be locked out of the exploit chain in the future. On the other hand, if you're already running Henkaku or h-encore, you can spoof your system version to 3.71 directly from your CFW's settings.

    If you have a PSVita, like listening to music, want to use a dedicated music playing app and don’t fancy using QCMA to use the stock music player then your best choice is Joel16’s ElevenMPV.
    This CyanogenMod/LineageOS-inspired homebrew music player supports playing a whole variety of music formats (MP3/WAV/FLAC/OGG and more) from any directory in storage and also comes with a whole slew of features including metadata support, a shuffle function and more!


    ElevenMPV 2.1.0 has been released and this brings along:

    • The ability to access any directory on the PSVita thus making it an unsafe homebrew
      • This means you need to have Unsafe Homebrew enabled in HENkaku Settings and VitaShell will warn you about it being unsafe before letting you install it; it poses no risk to your device’s well-being!

    • Lastdir.txt is removed after switching to another device to fix a bug that caused the homebrew to crash
    • Some UI fixes including a tidying up of the menu title in device settings and a fix to the cancel button of the settings menu not being used
    • Playing speed on down-sampled MP3 files has been fixed, dr_libs was updated to the latest version and decoder functions got a minor cleanup

    To grab ElevenMPV 2.1.0, check out its GitHub release page to download the VPK. It’s currently not available on VitaDB (and VHBB by extension) but will soon be.

    Thanks to Xerpi‘s awesome work, you can stream your PSVita’s screen to a computer via USB giving you a similar experience to the Switch’s TV mode. However, Xerpi didn’t just stop supporting it when it worked well enough but kept on releasing updates to fix bits and pieces. Now, version 1.3 has been released with one major improvement!

    Xerpi’s UDCD_UVC is a kernel plugin for hacked PlayStation Vita consoles that lets you stream your console’s screen to a computer over USB.

    The latest update to the UDCD_UVC plugin brings the following to the table:
    ◾ A fix, by u3sh*t, relating to System App detection which means that you can now run applications like Settings and the Browser while you’re streaming your PSVita’s screen over USB!◾From some testing that I’ve done, I noticed that the Settings, Browser, Calendar and Photos apps have been fixed

    For a tutorial on how to set up UDCD_UVC, follow this link to get streaming fairly quickly. On the other hand, if you want to tinker with your PSVita, you can check out SilicaAndPina’s recently released CEX2REX homebrew that lets you turn your PSVita to a Testkit at your own risk as I haven’t tried it myself.

    A few weeks ago, hacker TheFlow released Trinity, the ultimate exploit suite for the latest PS Vita firmware 3.70.
    Yesterday, the developer shared a writeup of the hack. With an impressive amount of vulnerabilities (6 of them) used to lead up to full access of the Vita system, this is a long and complex read.


    The adventure starts with a kernel exploit in the PSP emulator, takes us into looking for Kermit vulnerabilities via a fuzzer, to ultimately defeat ASLR and craft an ARM Kernel exploit on the Vita CPU.
    Old timers like me will enjoy the whole part related to controlling and escaping the PSP emulator through a MIPS Kernel exploit, then will appreciate getting totally lost in the deeper layers of the Vita kernel. In any case, for anybody interested in how gaming consoles are exploited, this is a must read!

    After announcing it via a PSA in late March of the current year, TheFloW has finally released Trinity, the third public jailbreak for the PS Vita. Trinity relies on a PSP emulator escape exploit (as well as a MIPS and ARM kernel exploit) in order to work. You can see it in action in the following video shared by the developer himself:

    If you've already followed the instructions written in the PSA back when it was originally posted then you can proceed to install the jailbreak right away. However, if you didn't, you will need to download any PSP game to your Vita first; a PSN account linked to your Vita is required to do so. Demos and minis are OK, while PS Classics and Vita games will not work. TheFloW recommends to download the following free demos based on your region: Ape Quest (EU or UK), LocoRoco Midnight Carnival (NA or SG), YS seven (JP). If you're on firmware 3.69, you will also need to either upgrade to 3.70 or set your connection's DNS to 212.47.229.76.

    Once you're ready, you can follow these instructions to install Trinity to your PS Vita:





    1.Download and install qcma and psvimgtools (check the releases section for the binaries).


    2.Start qcma and within the qcma settings set the option Use this version for updates to FW 0.00 (Always up-to-date) to spoof the System Software check.


    3.Launch Content Manager on your PS Vita and connect it to your computer, where you then need to select PS Vita System -> PC, and after that you select Applications. Finally select PSP™/Other and click on the game that you want to turn into the Trinity exploit. If you see an error message about System Software, you should simply reboot your device to solve it (if this doesn't solve, then put your device into airplane mode and reboot). If this does still not work, then alternatively set DNS to 212.47.229.76 to block updates.


    4.Transfer the game over to your computer by clicking on Copy on your PS Vita. After copying, you go to the folder /Documents/PS Vita/PGAME/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/YYYYZZZZZ on your computer, where xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx is some string corresponding to your account ID and YYYYZZZZZ is the title id of the game that you've just copied over. You can look at the image at YYYYZZZZZ/sce_sys/icon0.png to verify that it is indeed your chosen game. Furthermore, the YYYYZZZZZ folder should contain these folders: game, license and sce_sys.


    5.Before you attempt to modify the backup, you should make a copy of it. Just copy YYYYZZZZZ somewhere else, such that if you fail to follow the instructions, you can copy it back and retry.


    6.Insert the xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx string here. If the AID is valid, it will yield a key that you can now use to decrypt/re-encrypt your game.


    7.Decrypt the game backup as follows (if you haven't installed psvimgtools yet, then just place them in the YYYYZZZZZfolder):

    psvimg-extract -K YOUR_KEY game/game.psvimg game_dec

    If done correctly, you should see an output like this:

    creating file ux0: pspemu/temp/game/PSP/GAME/YYYYZZZZZ/__sce_ebootpbp (x bytes)...
    all done.


    8.Download Trinity and copy the PBOOT.PBP file to game_dec/ux0_pspemu_temp_game_PSP_GAME_YYYYZZZZZ/PBOOT.PBP(the files EBOOT.PBP, __sce_ebootpbp and VITA_PATH.txt should exist in this folder). If PBOOT.PBP does already exist there, just overwrite it.


    9.Now re-encrypt the backup similar to above:

    psvimg-create -n game -K YOUR_KEY game_dec game

    If done correctly, you should see an output like this:

    10.Remove the game_dec folder and select Refresh database in qcma settings.


    11.Now you need to copy back the modified backup to your PS Vita: Launch Content Manager on your PS Vita and connect it to your computer (if it's already open, just go back to the first menu), where you then need to select PC -> PS Vita System, and after that you select Applications. Finally select PSP™/Other and click on the modified game. Perform the copy operation and exit Content Manager.


    12.In the livearea, the game should now have a different icon and should now be called Trinity. If not, please re-read the instructions more carefully and begin from fresh.


    13.Turn on Wi-Fi, then reboot your device and straightly launch Trinity. Do not do anything else, otherwise the exploit will be less reliable. It is very important that you do not have any running downloads in background.


    14.Enjoy the exploitation process and wait until it launches the Construct. If the exploit fails, simply rerun Trinity.


    15.Within the Construct, select Download VitaShell, then Install HENkaku and finally Exit.


    16.Congratulations, your device is now able ...

    VitaHex, a developer famous for making PS Vita games inspired from other games, has released his spin on the Dark Souls franchise.

    The game has similar elements to the Souls games. There is a large map to explore filled with deadly enemies.
    Combat system works well, basic combo attacks and rolling are there. It is very important to lock on you enemy before going for an attack by pressing the down arrow key. You start the game with 3 health potions only, so use them wisely.
    There are no checkpoints or save options yet and all the menus are missing but I’m working on all those elements and they will slowly appear in future versions of the game.

    mGBA is a GameBoy Advance (and Colour/Original) emulator that aims to deliver accurate emulation while performing well on lower-end devices.


    This emulator is available on multiple hacked platforms, like the Switch, 3DS and Wii, and PCs but the folks behind it still manage to keep the same codebase for all the available versions so all supported platforms get the latest goodies!


    As this emulator is still actively in development, it regularly receives updates and the latest one is version 0.7.1 which brings along:

    • A fix for the Vita port in which save files weren’t flushed to disk if mGBA crashes or closes unexpectedly.
      • This could cause save files not to be updated with the latest save data and progress to be lost

    • Freezes in the menu on the 3DS and bugs relating to opening the application and gyroscope orientation on the Switch were fixed
    • Internal core improvements relating to memory, DMA and video were made to increase accuracy
    • Other minor features and bug fixes such as an updated Italian translation and a fix for the window icon when using X11
